well i started getting acne suddenly breakout after breakout about 4 months ago, and that's when I started thinking maybe I can stop the breakouts by trying to eat healthy, and that's when I started trying to eat healthy...I'm not too sure if that's made any difference at all, but I didn't go like strict vegan/organic diet, I slowly changed my diet. If it's like an IB, or my body just removing toxins through my skin, I would think that would stop after a max of 2 months right? Lol, just an idea, so I don't know if it's still my body getting rid of toxins, I've also tried taking Neem pills, but I got lazy and stopped those. I have been having spinach at least once every day now for the past few weeks.

As for dinner, we do still make veggie dishes few times a week but it's not every night because I have other siblings, older, who are VERY picky eaters, so my mother tries to please everyone, and there's only so much you can do when you have two people in the house who despise veggies lol.

Haha, that stinks about your older siblings not liking veggies! You might be able to convert them though if you start by "hiding" the veggies first! hehe

If you've been eating poorly for a really long time and are still eating bad foods, it's possible (I would think - I'm just guessing here) that you are continually detoxing. However, I'd definitely give the smoothies a try. I hope they will be your solution! Remember too that you get four times the nutrients from food when you blend them, so if you're having spinach as a salad everyday, you'll be getting a "lot" more nutrients when you start blending the spinach.

Would love to know how you progress! Good luck! :)

ABG: No fruit, just veges. I'm going pretty strict on the low carb thing for candida, so no fruits at all. Mostly just basic greens with some ginger and such.

Hey, do you think its possible for these smoothies to be drying my skin out. It seems like my face has definitely been dryer, and iv been doing the smoothies for a few weeks now every day...maybe its time to get off my topicals?? Is it even possible for them to affect sebum production that much

^ Hello there! Actually, in the life of this thread, there have been a few people who stated that the smoothies made their skin less oily. I think they are probably the minority, but it's definitely possible that this is the case for you. If your skin is doing well, I'd ease off the topicals for sure - not cold turkey, but I'd slowly phase them out. BP is a skin irritant and best to avoid anyway if you can. I'm excited that you might be able to stop using the topicals! Oh - if using salicylic acid (BHA), it's fine to continue, as it's a good idea to use as part of a normal skin routine anyway (see what Paula Begoun says if curious). :)

Hey ABG or anybody:

is it possible that the citrus in the fruits can kill some of the good minerals/phytonutrients in the leafy greens?

Hey there Maximus!

I think you are super smart for thinking of that. I've never heard or read of that being true, so I'm guessing that even if it does occur to some extent, it's probably not enough to worry about. :)

ABG i was researching green tea and i read of a study showing that adding citrus like lemon juice in green tea actually helped the absorption of catechins because it lowers the PH of the small intestine. Perhaps it works the same way in green smoothies eh?

Edit: Anyways, I always go on the website whfoods.com to check out the health benefits of food..its one of my favorite websites you should check it out. Anyways, I emailed them about the citrus affecting the phytonutrients and heres what they said:

"We have not seen any research that would lead us to believe that the citrus would reduce the availability of the phytonutrients in the leafy green vegetables. "

So i guess its really not a concern!

Maximus,

You are so cool for e-mailing whfoods about that! Very cool about catechins too - love lemon in green tea. Thanks for sharing! :)

Just made my first smoothie! I put a cup of water, some ice, frozen raspberries, a few cut up strawberries (next time I will make sure to add more, because the raspberry to strawberry ratio was off) and baby spinach leaves.

It tastes alright, I guess. I need to experiment with flavors. I plan on having one every day for the next week.

Good job! I have actually found they are a little addicting, it seems like my body really likes them! A warning, i did go through a little IB type thing. A 1 or 2 few weeks after i started drinking them my chest area broke out and I got a weird rash on my arms for a few weeks. Those both went away, i think it was either the toxins coming out or my body adjusting to all the nutrients. Also, don't use mustard greens or arugala lol...trust me on that

Juliecakess,

Maximus is right about mustard greens and arugula! haha Although, both are okay if in a "mix," and arugula can be good if just used with apples or pears, some lemon juice, and mostly a veggie mix. For your smoothies, strawberries and raspberries aren't very sweet in flavor. I think you'll enjoy your smoothies more if you add in some apples or pears - both are still low GI foods but offer a sweeter flavor. :)

Thank you for the support! And yikes, I am hoping yo avoid any IBs. At least this week... ah. Crossing my fingers. I'm glad your rashes went away though. 😀

I'll be sure to avoid mustard greens and arugala... I'm not even sure what that is, lol.

Before I read this post, I made myself a smoothie consisting of baby spinach leaves, ice, a bit of mango juice, and loooots of strawberries. I loved it! Although, I have personally always liked the taste of blended strawberries. I prefer the flavor to regular, unblended strawberries lol!

Are strawberries alright to use?

^Oh good! So glad you liked it with the mango juice! If you can use the whole mango (I like buying frozen mango, as it's so convenient), even better! Yes, strawberries are just fine to use! :)

Hey ABG fairy, I'm new to the site and stumbled upon your thread. I'm really digging your idea about the vegetable smoothies. I'm vegetarian so I'm not a stranger to veggies and fruit at all haha, just wondering if you had some good smoothie recipes =). I'm really into keeping my skin clear as naturally as I possible can so I think what your doing is awesome.

^ Thank you so much, and I appreciate the encouragement! :) I'm glad you're excited about trying smoothies! The veggie smoothie recipes listed are the only ones I have. I would make those, and then experiment with your own concoctions. The main key is to add at least one or half of a fruit (I recommend apples or pears), and to add lemon juice. I think parsley makes any veggie smoothie taste really fresh. You can experiment with adding vegetables like parsley, cucumbers, bell peppers. After a while too, you'll get to where you become more brave about experimenting with different vegetables, and even if it's not a hit, they're can quickly be drunk down! haha

Here's a recipe for Dr. Oz's green drink! :)

Ingredients

2 cups spinach

2 cups cucumber

1 head of celery

1/2 inch or teaspoon ginger root

1 bunch parsley

2 apples

Juice of 1 lime

Juice of 1/2 lemon

Mindwitch,

Greens are one of the most powerful things you can do to help your skin, but I'm sorry it wasn't the all-in-one ticket for you. Can I ask how long you tried them and what other foods you were eating at the time? Any animal products or dairy?

For some, depending on how bad the skin's condition and one's overall health, it can take many months before improvements are seen. As they say, you didn't become unhealthy overnight, so you can't expect to become healthy overnight either. I believe acne is a sign of an underlying health problem.

I definitely believe the greens can help you, but it just might take a while. Even if you don't see tangible results, they are doing wonderful things for your health. You can send me a PM if you'd like explaining your current regimen, and perhaps I might have some ideas for you. If not, I really hope something works out for you soon. :)

After reading ABG fairys page here i was wondering if anyone in the UK could recommend a reliable blender?

Also a question for the oridinal poster. Because i'm on a candida diet would it be ok to do a mostly veggie smoothie with some low sugar fruits thrown in (such as lemon and lime) i mean would the taste be good do you think?

for the entire season of winter i would go to my local supermarket buy tons of spinach apples and oranges and make a smoothie. sometimes it tasted good most of the time it tasted horrible. i was eating healthy around those times as well. there were a few things that looking back were not good skin wise such as patties but even when i stopped taking those things my skin STILL sucked. i don't think a cne is an underlying health problem for everyone. otherwise most of the worlds population would have it. it mostly boils down to genetics.

If you have a candida problem which is causing acne then the sugar from oranges and to a much lesser extent apples, will make you breakout. Healthy eating is subjective at times. Fruit is one of the healthiest things you can have in the world but if your intolerant to it or you have candida then its not healthy for YOU.

I guess what i'm saying is dont give up on the diet/acne connection as yet. Just keep trying to find what triggers your acne.

Only veggie smoothies are yummie. If you blend spinach and think its to strong of a taste add some mild tasting veggies like cucumber or lettuce to it. It will even it out.

I wouldnt juice fruit. Drinking 4oranges in 20sec for example is so much sugar at once. If you eat them normally at least it takes some time to ingest.

What about veggies with low sugar fruit such as lemon and lime? do you think that would be nice tasting and healthier for sugar sensitive people?
