How Acne has affected me

So to start this off, I have had acne for about 4 years, at the start it wasn't so bad it was only mild acne. Things started getting progressively worse when I started freshman year, by winter it looked like I just came back from a war and had gotten the Bubonic plague too. People made fun of me and all the time in the hallways I would hear
"go use proactive "
"that's what a 1/10 looks like"
"Don't you ever wash your face"
"what's wrong with him"
then March rolled around and it started to get somewhat better, I only had a few yet I still had cystic acne.
June came and it was clean I had no acne, I feel like I could become a model. Note: my doctor took me off the acne medicine during the winter, maybe that's why I broke out so bad.
now I'm in sophomore year of high school and I resorted to using BB cream so it would lessen the redness, of course people made fun of me too. I have bad anxiety, I feel like everyone is constantly judging me for my acne. At one point I just stayed home because I couldn't handle it. I'm a guy 16 years old with fused cystic pimples and I'm ashamed of myself, my uncle told me my dad had bad acne too, I believe its hereditary. My mom told me it was my fault because i didn't wash my face , yet I did. I feel like a disgrace . I can't meet or talk to new people, which sucks because I actually do enjoy meeting new people.

I'm sorry you feel so terrible about your acne. I'm 33 and I've been dealing with acne for almost 20 years. I still struggle to accept my skin. I feel like acne is the only thing that holds me back from being truly happy. We all need to remember that no one is perfect. Everyone has flaws whether they are physical, mental or emotional flaws. I know you feel helpless and you feel like everyone is judging you on your acne but the truth is- most people don't care about your acne. If kids are teasing you it's only because they are insecure with themselves. Trust me! The best advice I can give you is to be confident with yourself and don't left acne hold you back. If you feel like a model, act like a model. Your confidence will outshine any acne on your face! People won't even notice your acne if you're confident and outgoing. A few of the most popular kids in my school were overweight or had terrible acne and no one cared- why? Because they were confident. I hope you feel better about yourself. Acne isn't easy to deal with but always remember that it could always be worse.

Hey, I'm really sorry you're feeling this way, and I'm even more sorry that your own family is putting you at fault and making you feel worse. If I knew your mom, I would tell her off in person! Having acne makes us all feel so bad anyway, it is so much worse when people say things to make us feel ashamed on top of it all. I agree with with you that cystic acne cases are very likely to be hereditary (and otherwise probably hormonal).
It sounds like you were on a medication that was working - can you go back on that? Or are you trying something different now? My advice is to never give up. If something doesn't work, go back to your doctor and discuss the next option. There are so many different drugs / topicals / light therapy etc and combinations of these to try. KEEP GOING until you find something that works!
Btw when I was about your age there was a guy in my class who started using some make up / concealer to cover acne. People made fun of him for like one morning, and he really stood up for himself and basically said so what if I use it? I have some acne and I want to cover it - doesn't everybody want to do that? Girls do it everyday etc. Everyone actually just agreed with him and it was never mentioned again. Sometimes owning what you're doing and being confident about your choices will get people off your back a bit. Easier said than done though...
Good luck and keep going!

@Megan123 I hope you're feeling better today. How is your accutane journey going? In 6 months you should have so much improvement, hopefully thats helping you keep going! I'm starting in a few weeks and I'm really excited and looking forward to it. I'm kind of jealous of you just because you are a few weeks ahead of me and actually on it already!

This is a hoary old myth. Most bullies/ tormentors don't have low self esteem. At best they have what psychologists would term "unearned high self esteem". They genuinely believe that they are a special class of person that doesn't have to play by the rules or conform to social niceties. At worst, they are psychopaths who enjoy inflicting misery on others. They are not necessarily any more jealous or insecure than your average human.

Even if you wouldn't describe them as bullies, people in general enjoy making fun of or belittling others. That's what most forms of comedy are based on. Adults will usually do this sneakily behind each other's backs. The unfortunate thing about adolescence is that a lot of people haven't developed the empathy or common decency to do this in private or behind your back. Children are wonderfully honest in that respect.

And if we're being honest, some people just don't like the way you look and will judge you as unworthy because of this. You haven't done anything wrong, you may be a wonderful person, but in general the human race doesn't like things that are unappealing or unattractive. Its a fact of life. You really need to accept this and move on. Not everyone will see you this way.

Best advice anyone ever gave me is to fake confidence. Don't be yourself. Don't ever let anyone know that you are weak or struggling.

Oh, and everyone notices your acne. The important thing is that not everyone will hate you because of it.

That's great to hear! Not much going on for me until I'm actually able to start on the accutane - just hoping my bloodwork is all ok to go ahead with it.

It's NOT your fault!!!! Anybody who tells you that is wrong!!! Acne is nobody's fault...it just is. It would be like faulting a person for getting brain cancer. Acne is a skin disorder and none of us chose it. Hope you find the support and info you're looking for. This is a great community and know that you're among friends here! :)
