Pros:

Low cost, does not cause excessive dryness, does not cause flaking or peeling, anti-inflammatory, astringent; this alternative botanical has a long history and is well studied; non-toxic preparations are available (but most RX preps have alcohol)

Cons:

Most preparations are packaged as a liquid, denatured by the addition of alcohol. The odor is not strong, but it is reminiscent of the bark from which it is distilled. I find the smoky fragrance preferable to that of most medicated pad products.

Witch hazel is often a better option than many commercial acne preparations. Like salicylic acid, Witch Hazel originated as a native American herbal remedy prepared from bark. Witch Hazel is still prepared from bark, and has an earthy, bark-like smell. The smell is from volatile oils and tannins, which appear to have direct effects in skin and blood cell activity. Alcohol is commonly added to commercial preparations as a preservative, but typically not in amounts which would cause stinging or harsh stripping of skin oils. It will generally not eliminate acne entirely, but can substantially reduce the redness, discomfort and swelling associated with acne, and as a result may also reduce the tendency for secondary contact dermatitis due to itching and rubbing, and the deeper scarring due to strong breakouts. I find my skin less oily but not dried out. I normally prepare my own medicated pads using cotton cosmetic circles and a recycled acne medicated pad type of plasti

Pros:

Calmed my skin down within two days. No skin irritation. Reduced the appearance of existing skin irritation on my face. Leaves my skin feeling calm and smooth.

Cons:

Smell is awkward (because it doesn't have the same smell of the commercial brand astringents, no fruity smells.) Sometimes things that are good for you doesn't smell inviting at first, you'll get used to it.

Nature is the best remedy for our ailments. I recommend the witch hazel to anyone suffering from acne or skin irritations.

Pros:

I have used it for a day or two, and it has helped out with everything, such as redness, any scrapes I have, acne, blackheads, and eye circles. Really great results.

Cons:

The smell is an acquired taste.

Use it once a day all over your face and neck, and if you would like to on cuts and bruises on arms and back.
