Pros:

It's low cost, easy and shrinks/cleans pores

Cons:

does not prevent acne

I use vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) to treat my acne...life saver... been using it for years and it's the only thing that ever worked

Pros:

It does help calm down acne for "ME".

Cons:

Depends on where you get it, the costs can be a bit pricey.

I have tried everything except throw horse manure on my face, because I have hormone break outs which are the worst, it can get real frustrating really quick. You go to the store and look at all the "pricey" acne quick fixes, and it is a real shame what manufactures pass off as so called "cures" for acne. The nice pretty packages, big words, and slick prices are really a hoax. Get the Dickinsons facial toner, not the regular witch hazel, you have to be specific in which kind of toner you pick up. It costs a little more in some stores, but it can also be hard to find. I just happen to get the last bottle off the shelf of this one drug store, and debated about buying it because of the price. I'm glad I brought it. Try it, you may not like the smell, but its better than $$$$ wasted on pretty botteled toners that don't work.

Pros:

Cheaaaap and easy to get. Also has other uses.

Cons:

smells strong, but not bad..just strong. you can always dilute.

I always have which hazel around. I don't actually use it on my face that much, but last night I had a few pimples that I really did not want to GROW overnight. I was going to consider that toothpaste method I always hear about, but I figured I'd just put some undiluted witch hazel on instead. Sure enough, they weren't any bigger in the morning--the pimples were actually smaller and dried out. It's not a miracle or anything(because nothing really is when it comes to stubborn acne), but I think it definitely keeps things at bay and who knows--maybe long term use works even better! I would only say to use a good moisturizer during the day if you plan to use this stuff regularly because it does contain alcohol which can dry you out a lot.

Damaging- do not use this!!

This seems to help. At first. But it ruins your skins barrier function & ends up causing more breakouts.

I tried to stop this a few times & kept going back. Thinking it kept me from breaking out. After a month of sticking with no toner, my skin looked soo much healthier. It took about 5 years for me to notice the damage it was doing. Look on beautypedia about the damage witch hazel or alcohol does to your skin!

If you want something similar, that’s not as damaging. Try using apple cider vinegar.

Right now I just use my cleaner & moisturizer, with persagel & vitamin c on spots. Works great & have almost no breakouts. It was witch hazel that started the horrible cycle of breakouts in my 30’s that I couldn’t get rid of!

worked super quick for me!
i've struggled with moderate/severe acne for most of my life, and as a result i have a ton of leftover redness and scarring. i finally saw a dermatologist for the acne itself, and the prescriptions (doxycycline and birth control) helped with the physical pimples, whiteheads, etc. but the redness never really faded, probably partially because of how pale i am. i'd heard of witch hazel as a remedy before, but i didn't know we had it at my house until about two weeks ago. i figured "why not?" and have been applying it every night since, after i remove any makeup i may have been wearing, and my skin already looks so much better! i was skeptical at first, and now i wonder why because this stuff is like magic. granted, i still have a fair amount of redness with the occasional pimple or two on my chin (my biggest problem area), but there really has been a huge improvement from what i've noticed. obviously i can't vouch for everybody else, but if you're someone like me whose skin has mostly cleared up but are still left with redness and scarring, i seriously recommend giving witch hazel a try! (also, the brand i've been using is t.n. dickinson's!)

Cleansing, not really acne-preventing.

Pros:

Fresh feeling
Clean feeling

Cons:

Smell takes awhile to get used to

I bought Witch Hazel at my local organic store, exactly this brand. It is more of a cleanser than anything else, it leaves your face feeling/looking very fresh and rejuvenated, but does not seem to do much for acne, other than cleansing your skin. Most likely shouldn't be targeted towards people suffering with moderate/severe acne like me.

Pros:

natural, felt clean/nice on skin

Cons:

broke me out, I realized it has glycerin in it--that's a big no no for my skin! I can't understand why lots of acne products have glycerin. It's supposed to be not very comedogenic but for people like me, it's still bad.

could be good for someone with dry to slightly oily skin, but not for people with really oily or break-out prone skin. I do like other kinds of witch hazel--as long as they don't contain glyercin
