Mom won't let me go on Accutane

Recommended Posts

I have tried pretty much everything for my acne and still get moderate acne. The dermatologist is willing to put me on Accutane I think but my mom won't let me go on it because of the notice on the FDA website that says some of the people on Accutane got liver enzyme increases/ possible liver damage. Is this a valid risk? Any info/webpages on this?

That is why you have blood tests taken monthly. If you start to develop liver problems your derm will see it in the labwork and take you off it immediately. Tell your mom no worries - the drug is a serious one and that is why it is highly regulated by the FDA... but BECAUSE it is highly regulated that means now more than ever it is relatively safe to take accutane!

My folks arent glad too. They tried to talk me out of tane. However they saw all these years of devastating depresion, so I think they understand. If you have a serious case your mom would understand it also I think.

my mum's always resisted it as well. so in november i told her i was sick of acne [i'd 'grown out of it' for like 2 years, then got it again when i went to uni, and it came back with a vengeance!] and that i'm responsible and mature enough to decide that i need accutane. it's really come to that point. so we reached a deal that i'd spend a month researching accutane, its mechanisms and side effects, and then if i then still wanted to take it, i could.

don't be mad at your parents, they're just looking out for you because they don't want you to get hurt.

If you really have treid everything then eventually accutane will probably be your only option. Can you post all the treatments you've tried and maybe I can recommend something (because I've had acne for 13 years and tried everything including accutane twice). Your mom is right to be worried though. Accutane gave me inflammatory bowel disease for two years and it could have been permanent.

If you do go on accutane you have to really take care of yourself. Drink tons of water and no alcohol, and eat a healthy diet.

skeptik - I think acccutane gave me irritable bowel syndrome is there much difference between that and inflammatory bowel disease? It seems to have stopped in the last 3 months (thank god) but was really bad for about 4 years. I wonder if that could be the same thing?? Please let me know what u think as I have wondered for ages if the ibs was related to the accutane. x x

My mom won't let me get on Accutane because it's too expensive. Who knew you could put a price on happiness?

The symptoms for IBS and inflammatory bowel disease are pretty much the same. My doctor at first diagnosed me with IBS, but then I started losing weight (which isn't supposed to happen with IBS) so he sent me to a GI (gastrointerologist...a specialist). She told me it was inflammatory bowel disease which she had seen a lot in people who were on accutane. I was on way too high of a dose, which probably contributed to this. Inflammatory bowel disease from accutane usually goes away eventually after stopping accutane (it took 2 years for me) whereas IBS seems to be a syndrome that hangs around for life with good and bad periods.

Your mother's are fools. That is about all I can say. Is your acne serious? If so, go tell you mom to... (that'd get me banned).

i had to wait until i was 18... so it happens...

let me tell you though, in those 5 years (ages 13-18) i developed scars which will never go away as long as i live & i blame my parents for this to this day (i am 26). i also had to live like a circus freak in high school with my face and back being completely covered in acne. my parents had NO sympathy cuz "Everyone goes through it" - well my face and back are scarred for life... not everyone lives that way.

let your mother know you will hold her accountable long into your adult life for ruining your body image, potentially leading to body dysmorphic disorder, and that you may never be comfortable with close personal relationships (im talking about sex) as long as you live because of your acne scars... thereby leading you to be single and miserable until you are old and alone. im being totally melodramatic, but it's not entirely untrue and she may reconsider.
