Cold Sore flare up from Accutane?

Recommended Posts

Ok so I am in my..... 5th month of Accutane and I have 2 to go. 19 yr old female.

I am on 40mg/day and I have had 3 cold sores since I started Accutane in May.

Before Accutane I would only get 1 MAYBE 2 a year (and that was on a really bas year, sometimes I would get none for several years)

I have a prescription for Valtrex, but it seems I may need to go on a daily dose or soemthing.

My questions are:

Did you notice your cold sores flare up while on Accutane?

Did your cold sores continue to always flare up that often AFTER coming off Accutane?

I can handle having these little buggers while ON Accutane, but I CANNOT keep having breakouts like this after I am off it.

Please someone tell me this is just going to be bad while on Accutane and I can go back to my once yearly bastard cold sore?

My doc said that since accutane messes with your mucus glands too that could be making it flare up, but I don't think she understands just HOW MUCH these things kill me.

My BF doesn't have cold sores and I am getting really scared that i am going to pass them to him because I am breaking out so often.

You need to get on a daily suppressive dose of valtrex. I am taking 500mgs/day throughout my course. My PA had absolutely no problem giving it to me and so far I have not had an outbreak. I am hopeful that this will keep the coldsores away during my course. I would think that once you are through, you won't have as many problems. All of my past problems with coldsore outbreaks have been due to issues with my lips (chapped, blistered, irritated). Good luck.

I would say that during the 3rd month on Accutane, I had a cold sore on the side my lip that didn't go away for about a month. I didn't really use any antibiotics, just used this neosporin lip complex. After it went away... it came back 2 weeks later, but this time it only stayed for about 4 or 5 days and then went away. After that.. I didn't experience any more cold sores. When I spoke with my derm about it, and he said that while on Accuatane, cold sores can develop. He never gave me anything for it since my cold sores went away... but just mentioned that it is common.

Can you become immune or build up a tolerance for Valtrex?

Because right now I have a prescription that when I feel like I am starting to get a cold sore I take 4 valtrex and 4 more in 12 hours and it works pretty good.

I am afraid that if I start a daily dose when I am off accutane I won't be able to take 8 valtrex to stop it from popping up. I know that our immune systems are what keep the virus at bay and I guess Accutane is making my immune system suck. Funny I haven't been sick though. Hmm perhaps it is because my lips are constantly raw and cracked. Just seems very strange to have so many.

(luckily my "outbreaks consist of 1 sore, but still this is my 3rd in 5 months which is UNHEARD of for me)

So basically you guys are saying after Accutane is over things will go back to the way they were with me getting 1 evil cold sore a year?

I can do one a year. maybe even 2. But this is getting out of hand. I am afraid to kiss my BF when I don't have one because I never know when another will pop up! That's no way to live!

I don't really know if you can become immune to valtrex. I do know it's a medication designed to suppress the herpes simplex virus - hence it's used for cold sores. It is usually used short term when you are getting a coldsore outbreak. But, it can be used as suppressive therapy. I imagine it might work better for some than others. I would speak to your dermatologist about it. I can't say whether your outbreaks will lessen following accutane. Since you seem really worried about it, I would have a discussion with your dermatologist.

I've had cold sores since childhood and I had a very bad cold sore problem for a few years before I ever took tane. I started getting like constant breakouts and sometimes had 2 or 3 at the same time. No one took me seriously so I never got any prescription for an antibiotic, until I went to my current derm. It suddenly calmed down a couple of months ago though, without any antibiotics. I started my tane course (low dosage) about 1 month ago and haven't still gotten any cold sore breakout.

If I remember correctly of what I've read on the internet, yes you do become slightly resistent to stuff like Valtrex. Cold sore breakouts lessen with time though, but there is no way to tell exactly when they will calm down. You need to always take extremly good care of your lips and overall health if you want to avoid cold sore breakouts.

Do whatever you can to keep your lips moisturized or at least from cracking and breaking so much. Find and invest in the best lip moisturizers you can find. Always use sun protection on your lips because UV-light causes cold sore breakouts. Stress is a big factor to so try your best at not stressing so much. Zink cream is what I have found the best cold sore topical that I use whenever I feel the first signs of a possible cold sore breakout. Actually, when I think about it, my cold sore full breakouts stopped when I started using zink cream and really, really made sure my lips were always moisturized and unirritated.

Google diet and cold sores 'cause even though the medical world says it can't be proven that diet matters when it comes to cold sores, I have noticed a huge difference when I don't take certain vitamin supplements or other supplements or when I'm eating too much of something that is considered bad.

When it comes to kissing your boyfriend... there's a big chance he already has HSV, without him knowing about it. Sooo many people has the virus in this world. Herpes can lay dormant for years until you see any kind of cold sore breakout. Anyway, immediately when you notice tingling or other cold sore signs, do not kiss him. Don't start kissing him immediately when your cold sore has gone away either 'cause your saliva is still very contagious of HSV. So wait a few days until kissing him.

I know the fear of kissing someone when you have cold sores. If you really want to keep your boyfriend for a long time, possibly for the rest of your life, then I would advice you to talk to him about having cold sores. I believe that there is no way you can keep on kissing a person until that person gets cold sores too sooner or later.

All in all, I think Accutane is the biggest reason for your breakouts Crimson Butterfly so I think that things will get much better after the course is over when you don't have all the side-effects anymore. Just keep yourself in good health and your lips in good condition and you'll be fine.

Cold sore number 4.

In a NEW spot that I've never had one before!

LOVELY, now not only am I being absolutely anal about washing my hands and not touching it, but I somehow managed to spread it on my lips WHILE taking Valtrex (which if you have used it works by stopping the virus cells from multiplying).

I don't understand how I spread it to myself.

I took the valtrex right away, i made sure my lips were moisturized, i washed my hands like crazy before and after doing anything with my face, AND the virus shouldn't have been able to move over because the valtrex stopped it multiplying!

I AM LOSING CONTROL HERE!

UFOrescue:

THANK-YOU for answering me!

Unfortunately I don't get tingling or itching or anything before I get a cold sore. It's just not there and then it is. So I never know when it's going to happen.

I don't kiss my BF while I have them, and i don't kiss him for 7 days after my lip has completely healed. So I am doing everything I can to keep him safe, I just never know when I am going to get one so I am really afraid of passing them to him.

We have discussed it and he says if he gets them he gets them, which is nice of him, but I really don't want him to have to go through this horrible shit too.

I'm glad you think it will go away when I am off the Accutane, or at least go dormant for a while.

My dad says that they get less active as you get older-I sure hope he is right. I have had this for like 12 years or something as I had 1 or 2 sores in my childhood.

But since I was 15 it has gotten a lot more frequent.

I am going to talk to my doctor about going on a low dose of valtrex just for the remaining months I am on Accutane because at this point I am spreading the virus to myself which in the long run is really bad.

I can deal with a breakout once or twice a year with no valtrex and tough it out if I get immune to it. But I CANNOT allow this to take over my bottom lip.

I already have 2 re-occuring spots, now a 3rd, I CANNOT get anymore.

Any more advice from anyone out there would be SO APPRECIATED.

I know they are working on a lot of vaccines for "herpes", but I am guessing we are at least 5 years off of anything good.

I feel like my body is out of control and bad stuff is taking over it, these cold sores really are ruining my daily life. :wall:

I feel so terrible and I cried for a good hour yesterday about this.

Popped 8 more Valtrex andhope it never re-occurs in this spot again.

:cry::cry::cry:

Sorry to hear about your new cold sore breakout Crimson Butterfly. You can't possibly know exactly when it spread to that new spot on your lips, so don't blame yourself or Valtrex for it so much. Your boyfriend seems really sweet, nice and understanding about it so don't feel so bad.

About Valtrex, I read on the internet that taking antibiotics or creams that are prescribed for HSV might in the long run make the time between cold sore breakouts shorter. In other words, you'll get a new breakout more often than before. I believe that happened to me, since I used the same bloody cream since I was little. Using a natural supplement or healing ingredient is different 'cause it's natural and don't have whatever those antiobiotics have, so in theory it shouldn't have any other than healing effects on your health. Don't get me wrong, I would still continue using the Valtrex as much as your doctor says is okay, but if I were you I would look into other preventive methods and incorporate that into your cold sore battle.

Things that you can do to prevent cold sores from spreading is for example avoiding licking your lips, using a lip cream with the highest sun protection possible, changing your lipsticks and lipbalms about a week after your cold sore has disappeared and whenever you have a cold sore and put something on your lips whatever you decide to put on your cold sore use a cotton ball or something and dab it there.

Hey UFOrescue

I am only using Valtrex until I am off Accutane as I too believe that any kind of antibiotics and whatnot only make things more resistant in the long run.

Any time i get a cold sore i throw out all the lip balm i have used in the past week and throw out my toothbrush, and afterwards i wash all my bedding and clothing and everything.

I have rubber gloves that i use when applying anything to my lips, and i use aquaphor out of a large tub so i don't infect it.

i will have to start using really strong sunscreen lip balm i think, but i am fairly certain after accutane things will be etter and go back to once a year because i have a great immune system usually.

i think i am very weak against the herpes viruses because I had chicken pox twice as a child and i get very intense cold sores when i do get them. i scar almost every time which really impresses me.
