Is Spironolactone only effective in females...?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering whether Spironolactone would effect males as well? I read it's sometimes used as hormone therapy for male to female transsexuals. Is it this which makes Spironolactone a treatment only to be used by women, or would it just not work in males?

Spiro blocks androgen production, which decreases the amount of testosterone in the body. It wouldn't be good for males to use because they need testosterone to keep their male characteristics. That's why it's used for male-to-female transsexuals - it causes the hair to thin down and become less course, makes facial hair go away, causes breast growth, etc.
