Ok I'm trying to cut down on my time here because I've been addcited to this org, but I felt like I would just post about this to those who are considering taking accutane.. No this doesn't happen to everyone, but i've heard from a few other people who have had the same experience with this problem that I did.

I'm sick of people acting like accutane is a wonder drug, maybe for some it is, but not for everyone, and its a risk, and after what I just heard I'm very upset right now.

I took accutane for 5 months, 40mg the 1st 60mg the last 4. My derm told me yea yea side effects go away quickly after blah blah blah.

Whether you take accutane or not is your decision, but if you play sports and are an athlete, than taking accutane will definately no question about it ruin your athletic career.

I used to play sports all the time, used to play football games all day where I'd be tackled alot and I used to workout alot, yeah I'd get sore from an intense workout or rough football game every now and then, that was normal.

But now, I finished taking accutane july 6th, its now september 18th, and my side effects are still here.

Bad body aches bad back pains.. I can't throw anymore, right when my back started getting better after accutane, it got bad 7 weeks later when I was throwin a baseball around with a friend.

I mentioned how i played football games where i sometimes got sore.. Well saturday I was just throwin around a football, and my back is bad as ever, and even worse, my right forearm is really bad now,its either pulled, strained, or else I fractured a bone in this wrist from catchin a few passes. This to me is a big disgrace, very sore just from throwin around a football?

I was always a small guy and what not, but I was always the guy who never got hurt, got up after every hit no matter how hard it was, didn't like to show pain, never made excuses. now I'm very sore to the point of feelin partially crippled sometimes. I didn't even reach my 18th birthday yet, and I went from durable to now hobbling around sometimes.

Oh and guess what, no pimples, but red marks and my face still doesn't look good.

So I was in bad pain today so I called up the accutane lab, the pharm lab of amnesteem to be specific, because that was the one i took, and the woman told me theres no set time for when side effects will go away, she said that varies, and she said side effects may never go away.

I'm to fatigue right now, I used to literally spend all day at the bball courts where we'd play from morning til dusk all day, game after game, we're young, so never did any of us, especially me say we were tired to play an 11th game if we were challenged by another team, it was all day everyday in scorching heat.

Now im so fatigue last time i played bball, i was done after 1 game and couldn't go on for a second.

This is terrible, 2 and a half months post tane and my body is bad, and the woman tells me this may never go away, meawhile my doctor just easily brushed off every side effect.

I feel terrible about it right now, I have a feeling like i wanna cry my brains out, but i have a hard time crying so I feel like im crying even though im not..

This is just a post to warn about accutane, and think about taking it.

And if your an athlete, its not worth ruining your athletic life over some stupid acne, that still wont be fully gone after accutane.

Watch, live and learn. so take this post as advice, im sick of bitching on this site so im not gonna bitch over it, and i dont mean to bitch if it appeared I was bitching in this thread, but thats my advice. And I'm not gonna post about accutane again.

I'm reallly sorry to hear about that... Sounds rough man... :comfort:

how long did it take for you to start feeling these side effects? I'm a diver and a gymnast, which is pretty rough on your body... and i've been on accutane for a month

You may have been asked this already, but have you taken anyting for it? I am not an athlete by any stretch of the imagination but when I started to feel some joint pain I took oils and that helped immensely. I would recommend something like Cool Oil which has a balanced blend of Omega 3, 6 & 9. I am not saying that it will get rid of all your aches and pains, but wanted to mention it on the off chance that no one else had.

If you play sports and are an athlete, than taking accutane will definately no question about it ruin your athletic career.

I don't mean to belittle your post because I feel sorry that your endurance/recovery time isn't back up to speed but this is a huge blanket statement to say that it will ruin your career as an athelete. I know MANY - I repeat MANY who have taken this drug with clear skin and are amazing athletes. Hell, I have a very good friend who trains weekly for the iron man and will bike well over 100 miles in the morning and still use the rest of the day to do chores, go grocery shopping, and hang out with me for 4-5 hours in the evening. He also used to HEAVILY work out (although has cut back to help improve his cycling). Of course, that's just one example, but the fact is that this statement is just not true.

You have only been off the drug about 2 months? In many cases, it takes far more than just a couple months to FULLY recover. Even if it was a year and 2 months I would still say give it time. This may not please a lot of people, but this is one of the risks. It's up to you to make a fully-informed decision.

Again, not trying to belittle your post because I'm sure you are upset, however I hardly think it's a certainty it will 'ruin your athletic career.'

I agree and disagree with your post. It all depends on the severity of the side effects you experience. I took Amnesteem from October '05 to March '06 - 80mg/day the entire time. During the treatment, I experienced back pain/dry lips/nose bleeds. The only side effect I still have on occasion are dry lips. I play collegiate ice hockey and played during my treatment, and saw no difference in my performance or how I felt physically. Different people have different tolerance levels when it comes to the drug. Yes it's a risk, but don't let the original post completely scare you away from Accutane, because it won't "ruin your athletic career" for everyone.

thanks for posting you concerns about the accutane experiance

and also consider this

it would be interesting to find out if there are any lurkers from the accutane companies here spinning the facts on accutane, i know its a horrible thought, but anything is possible. and im not accusing anyone of being a lurker or a spinner, but i thought i would just put that out there.

it would be best to talk to a few people personally that have taken the drug and be careful what you believe, even on this website im sure not everyone is who they say they are.

stay safe.

For me, this is actually a case of common sense. There's no guarantee of side effects dropping, but it is likely.

Because there are no guarantees, if there are any side effects that come along that you can't live with in the worst case scenario, you should go back to your derm immediately. Then you can discuss some other options like going on a lower dose and having a compromise.

I do sympathise, but I also do get really annoyed with posts where people say they regret taking it due to something, and they never went to discuss it with their derm. Thats essentially your own neglect of your body to discuss concerns with the derm as it happens.

Having said that, I do actually wholeheartedly think that accutane isn't for people who train hard and that should definitely be discussed with the derm. I chatted with the derm about it when I started getting pains, and she said you can permanently damage yourself if you overtrain on accutane, so I made the choice to stop training (I just keep fit now, but no hard exercise). So be careful. Accutane is a strong drug, people know the possible side effects, and then go exercising hard, drinking (don't mean you) etc etc, and then come back with problems.

Accutane needs to be taken very carefully.

It's a scary world out there now-a-days but I'd have to say "nah" - at least not for accutane. They pay pharma reps to do that to doctors. Besides, now that there are generics out, what would be the point for Roche? Once they go generic, nothing can save the drug for that company. That's why big pharma will try to get patent extensions or change the meds slightly, or combine it with an existing one. They say it will "save the patient money" - and in some cases it does - but most of the time, it's just another way to make more money. Anyway, coming on one web board to make sure we keep taking the drug (or not taking another competitor's drug) is not at the top of their priorities list ;).

FYI, if you're really interested in the facts, look into the NEJM (new england journal of medicine) or PubMed studies. Might be easier to go to a library so you don't have to pay for the NEJM. PubMed will cost you though. Of course, the FDA website always has some interesting info. Check those out too!

Have you tried fish oil supplements? They are very helpful for this sort of side effect - they are natural anti-inflammatories and seem to lubricate joints that were dried out by Accutane which is apparantly the source of the aches.

Whether you take accutane or not is your decision, but if you play sports and are an athlete, than taking accutane will definately no question about it ruin your athletic career.

Have you had a physical and/or blood work to rule out an illness? I think it is easy for people to blame everything on the meds and ignore that something else is going on. Make sure you rule out any other problems.

My derm assured me that he has put many athletes on accutane with no problems. He told me one of his patients is a San Diego Charger, who took accutane during the football season. It did not slow him down.

Since I am older (39), I am being very careful while taking the meds. I take Omega 3-6-9 with my accutane, and also calcium supplements (that have magnesium, zinc, and vit D in them). I also started taking glucosamine w/msm.

oh by all means theres a ton of lurkers everywhere.. I dont think it would be hard to convince that i'm not a lurker because of my post count and number of posts I've made and the types of posts I've made. but yeah there probably are lurkers on this form. Well, I always took care of myself, so its just really a depressing thought to be in this type of shape. And to the poster that said you know someone who is a great athlete who took tane, thats normal, because side effects vary. i happened to get this side effect more aggressivley. It bothered me that my derm brushed off side effects, now this woman today tells me they may never go away. I dont get any other side effects except for this. My lips are fine, my nose is more runny than ever, this started during tane, as a rare side effect, and it hasn't gone away, but its nothing major having a sometimes runny nose.

And my back aches literally started immediately. The very 1st 2 days i took accutane I got bad migranes, like worser than normal headaches that were really unbearable, but that was only for the 1st 2 days then it never happened again. But within the 1st 10 days my back was aching. And has been this way ever since. And its been 4 days since saturday and my right forearm is still aching me from throwing around the football.

Sorry man but I dont think its right u post "It WILL ruin you athletic carrer", i have 5 training sessions of basketball a week and havnt suffered a back pain yet except for obvious things like getting elbowed...this is only after 1 month of roaccutaine and Im not saying I wont experience some pain or muscle ache later on, I probably will, but then ive just got to accept it I knew the possible side effects when I started my course and Ive just got to hope its not that severe and will go away. Side effects are differnt for every one.

anyway sorry to hear about your muscle ache and fatigue but 2 months after treatment isnt that much, talk to a specialist about it and hopefully it will go away.
