I used to have acne problems when I was 13 until 15 years old. Right now, being 19, I rarely have acne but I do suffer from extremely oily face and NOTHING works!!! I wash my face twice (morning and night), I always remove my makeup and I exfoliate my skin three times per week and nothing. This is very frustrating because using makeup is the only thing that kind of controls my oiliness and I'd prefer not to use makeup at all Before applying makeup I use milk of magnesia and a primer and I use baby powder to set my makeup, but after 3-4 hours my face still becomes a freaking disco ball (thanks to that routine my oiliness takes a bit more to appear). Has something worked for you? I'm willing to receive any tips or advice, I'm starting to think I'll have to bear with this problem my whole life. Is there something out there that could to stop my oil so I could stop using makeup?
(Please consider that when I talk about oily face, I refer as really extreme oiliness. Just after 30 mins I have washed my face, oil starts to build up)
Ps. My skin isn't sensitive neither prone to acne problems. I don't exercise too much and I try to eat healthy. I wear makeup every day. It is literally the only thing that controls the oil in my face.
Thanks a lot!
You could have some type of hormonal imbalance that is causing this and might consider getting tested. The oil production in our skin is controlled by the androgens in our body (the main one being testosterone). Females naturally have less of these than males, but in some cases females can have too much or can be particularly sensitive to their effects. This can result in a lot of potential issues, extremely oily skin being one of them. There are a lot of different skin care items and cosmetics out there that can help minimize it to some extent, but like you said it's no fun to have to always rely on cosmetics or a strict skin care routine to control it.
Some people are born with skin that is naturally a bit oily, and a lot of people will just say to 'suck it up/deal with it", but but I personally don't believe that extremely oiliness is normal/healthy for your skin and I don't believe that people should have to suffer through it!If you are looking for an oral medication... Birth Control pills and other anti-androgens such as spironolactone have been shown to help with oily skin because they lower the testosterone levels in your body. You would have no problem getting prescribed the pill, but spiro is a bit more difficult if you just have oily skin without acne to accompany it. Many dermatologists will be reluctant. Low-dose accutane also lowers oil-production by shrinking the oil glands, but obviously accutane is the most risky option and you would have a hard time getting it for just oily skin.
There are a lot of natural remedies/supplements and DIY stuff floating around on the internet about controlling oil production, but it's hard to tell what's right/wrong because it's mostly people's personal testimonies of "what worked for them". Scientific evidence is either limited or non-existent. There are certainly success stories out there though, and if you are into all that stuff there's no harm in doing research and trying some things for yourself.
On a side note ---- Milk of Magnesia is something I would try to avoid using regularly if you can. It's great at controlling oil, but it's very bad for your skin in the long-run as it damages your skin's natural acid mantel. It's OK to use once and awhile, but not as a daily thing.
I would just go to the doctor and have them order a lab test for you. They'll give you a slip to take to the lab so that the people there know what to test you for. Then the lab sends the results back to your doc. I don't think you can just go to the lab without an order from the doc, but I could be wrong!
I am 55 years old and have lived with oily skin since the age of 12! Tried everything. What helps me best is probiotics from renew. 40 strains 150 billion in one capsule. I take two a day. Reduced oil by 75 per cent. I had a hysterectomy and always thought my acne was hormonal. Thought after my hysterectomy my acne would be gone due to no more hormones. WRong!! oily skin and acne were still going strong. My issue is my gut bacteria. I was always thin but had cellulite, never had cavities but had lots of tarter build up on my teeth. cellulite disappearing and tarter which is bad bacteria not an issue anymore. My point is if it is bad gut bacteria you will see it in other areas of your body and not just your oily skin. I prayed to God for an answer and he has helped me through this. I feel at times my oily skin ruined my life. Never did well in school because my skin always looked so oily and inflamed. Could not concentrate on my goals. My oily skin was always a depressing factor in my life. I learned to trust God and finally feel I am right where he needs me to be. Good luck and never stop looking and searching and praying for answers.
