Hii,
Yes so my question to everyone with hormonal acne is: how did you discover your acne was hormonal?
Feel free to answer, short or long doesn't matter.
MY 'DISCOVERY' - STORY
In my case, my doctor was too stubborn to do any tests. But after years of trying everything and researching I realized there was really no other 'reason' left besides my acne being hormonal. I even went on accutane and it did nothing after a year. Also my periods were irregular. Like really irregular. I'm on Birth control now but it's only been 2 months (yasmin) and I'm still breaking out. So if this does nothing idk anymore. I actually regret not telling my doctor more frequently to research what my hormonal imbalance actually is, but oh well..
Second question: How did you treat your hormonal acne? and if you still have it, what are you trying to do to get rid of it?
It was easy for me i always broke out really badly the week before my period and the week of my period and my derm told me it was hormonal because it cystic in nature and always occurred on the outer edges of my face around my chin and jawline. I was going to try accutane years go but my derm wanted me to try spiro and i was so glad i did it was the best decision i ever made. they told me that if i did accutane i could clear up while on it but that it would come back if i wasn't on spiro. what is crazy is that my derm actually told me about spiro a few years before that and i was stubborn and didnt want to try it. i wish i listened to her i could have saved myself a lot of scarring. It's been 5 1/2 years and i still take 100mg a day (50mg morning and night).
One more thing I was on birth control for years before spiro and it only made my skin worse. I wish I never took it because I swear it screwed up my hormones permanently. I did have hormonal testing done but it never found anything out of the ordinary. I wish you the best of luck and maybe think of trying spiro and getting off the bcp.

I went to the dermatologist yesterday, I wanted to ask about spiro but she said she didn't have time for me I get it, even she thinks I'm hopeless by now but that really sucked.
So thank you for sharing this information and your experience, since nobody ever tells me about spiro. The only thing left for me is trying spirolactone. But I have a few questions that really bug me, you don't have to answer if you don't want to:
1) How many months till you saw results? Is there any bad initial breakout, since that was the case with birth control for me.
2) Did you start off with 50 mg at first? Like, is it something you should build up or isn't that a thing with spiro
Also that dermatologist told me that every woman suffers from irregular periods, so she doubts that my acne is hormonal? I don't know it was weird. But then again, if it was hormonal why didn't birth control help? I really have no idea how or why my acne exists at this point
I agree with Tracy, hormonal acne is cystic in nature and more prone to scarring. I actually heard about Spiro years ago from a derm, he said that I would "pee like a horse" (not true, at least not for me), but at the time I wasn't convinced I had hormonal acne and didn't really want to go on a serious medication. I thought that I would be able to treat my acne with just retinoids/topicals because I was previously successful, but unfortunately for hormonal acne it's not enough.

I saw results after 3 months, but I haven't been 100% acne free, I still get some bumps and I'm thinking about increasing my dose because I'm on a low dose, but I don't know because those bumps might be diet related.Overall, my face is clear thanks to a decrease in sebum production.
I started out on 25 mg for 2 weeks and then went up to 50 mg. There is no right way of doing this. Some derms start you off low and others start you off high and then decrease the dose. I've heard of people having success with a low dose, soI didn't want to be on a high dose due to increasing side effects.
I've neverbeen on birth control orexperienced irregular periods.Even on Spiro, my periods are regular (no change), but I'm on a lowdose so who knows if that would change.
Well that is very frustrating! If your derm doesnt have time for you its time for a new derm. I was lucky after going through a lot of bad derms I found a new one before I started spiro that would not give up on getting me clear.
I was breaking out really, really badly before the spiro andwas getting weekly kenalog injections and already on doxy (that stopped workin for me) So after few months of being on the spiroI kept breaking out so I had the derm write me a script for keflex which cleared me up very quickly and then I stayed on that for a while and weaned off while still taking the spiro. At first I started at 25mg and then worked up to 100mg but I wish I just started off with taking the 100mg because every time I upped my dose it would screw withmy periods and I would get 2 a month which was the worst because of the breakouts around that time. Once I was on a consistent dose for a few months my periods went back to normal. If I did it all over again I would have gotten on the keflex before I started the spiro to catch any bad breakouts. I hope this helps but if I were you I would find a derm to give you the spiro right away.
