Hi! I have been utilizing acne.org forums for so many years and it's been a great help to me.
Happy to be here!
Quick history: i'm in my 30s, have suffered with hormonal cystic type acne ever since coming off birth control. Birth control kept me completely clear. Most specifically Yaz birth control was like a skin miracle but I also did well on Ortho-Cyclen.
I don't really want to do birth control because of the blood clot risks. So I decided to try spironolactone. My Gynocologist prescribed me 50 mg and said that's the perfect those for most of her patients with few side effects .
I noticed within one week of taking 50 mg my oildecreased and I started to clear. My back and chest cleared first and my face got gradually better. The oiliness came back however and that's disappointing. She agreed it to up my dose to 75 mg after one month and a half. I'm two months into treatment now and my total is75 mg per day. I take 50 in the morning and 25 at lunch . I would say my face is about 75% clear. It's not where I want to be however, I was hoping for the total clear skin I had on the birth control pill and the oily skin to go away.
what are your thoughts? Should I upthe dose to 100 mg? Or stick it out at 75 for a couple more months? I am very athletic 5 foot seven and I weigh 156 pounds . I'm monitored every six weeks potassium with blood draws and it's fine so far . I have noticed an increase in side effects when I upped my dose but if I drink a lot of water it helps. My side effects are mostly fatigue low blood pressure and dizziness. At 50 mg I have zero side effects.
do you think I should up my dose? Will it clear me faster? I hate to be impatient. I'm so grateful for the success I have seen so far and I hope it continues.
super happy with this drug and I can't recommend it enough, it's totally changed my self-esteem and just turned my life around . Definitely the benefits outweigh the risks!
I was hoping for a complete clearing though, I hope it's possible.
any words of advice?

I went up to 100mg max during my course of treatment and got the best skin of my life as a result. The oil decrease was what really helped. I was never 100% flawless at all times, but close enough. However, after I hit the one-year mark of taking the medication, I realized that my weight was starting to creep up (as many a poster on here has mentioned happening to them). I started out taking spiro very stressed and under 100 lbs. Gradually I began to gain. At first, I was relieved to be back in my normal range and thrilled to be back in a B-cup. But as the months went on, the weight kept creeping up despite my watching my diet (again, I've read many accounts of this happening). The weight gain has been concentrated around my middle and lower half and has started to become frustrating. Almost 25 pounds in all I've managed to put on, and what worries me most is that I have no way of knowing when the weight gain will stop. Many posters have said they were not able to lose their extra weight through eating clean or exercise; they had to quit the Spiro first.
I have decided to cut back my dosage to 50mg per day and observe from there. The weight gain has been my only complaint about the; other than that, it has worked very well and I hope to be on it long term.
