Spironolactone and hearing loss

About 10 years ago I suddenly became totally deaf in my left ear. I was diagnosed with sudden sensorineural hearing loss. The cause is unknown and the condition is pretty rare.

At the time of the loss, I was on Yasmin, which has 25mg of spironolactone. I had been on it for 7 years prior to the loss. At the time, all my physicians and specialists knew I was on bcp and that spironolactone was a component. Fastforward to today, and I'm taking 75 mg of spironolactone. It is working somewhat, however, I had planned to increase to 100. I had a yearly checkup with a new ear nose and throat Dr. who informed me that spironolactone can cause hearing loss and that I should not be on it.

First, I do not want to be deaf in both ears, so this is scary and alarming. I'm frustrated that no one ever pointed this out to me. I also am not confident 25 mg of the spiro in Yasmin caused such sudden and complete loss...and neither is my ENT. She is just stressing to me that spiro can cause hearing loss..perhaps not total, but some over time. At the same time (and I'm somewhat ashamed to even say this) I am almost more scared of what will happen with my acne if I stop the spironolactone. My quality of life with a face full of acne is terrible and the thought of going backwards with my skin scares me beyond belief. I do not know what to do. Has anyone ever heard of the spiro hearing loss connection??

I'd appreciate any thoughts or advice.

I'm sorry but nobody seems to know. I know acvutane has hearing loss potential but never heard this with Spiro. I'd phone or contact the manufacturers of Spiro and try to find out more info.

Oh my god! I also had sudden hearing loss which has worsened over the past 5 years or so. I never linked it to Yasmin, but that suddenly makes sense! I too was on Yasmin probably around the time my hearing problems started. I can't believe I never made the connection. I always thought I must have just ruined my hearing from too many concerts or something. But never understood why my friends never experienced the same thing.
I've just started on spiro and now I'm freaking out my hearing will worsen. But like you, I think I'd rather be deaf than live with acne! The acne is so incredibly dibilitating. It's humiliating. And my self esteem had plummeted whilst I've been living with acne. Hearing loss is also embarrassing and frustrating, but at least you can hide it better than acne.

Hi ladies. I am in shock at these posts because about 2months ago,my dermatologist put me on Spiro and about a month ago, I noticed a decline in my hearing. I thought it was caused by an ear infection or something else and Im about to see an audiologist next week, however, I just made the connection with this new med I am on and I was that it can cause hearing loss. Do you know if this is permanent? Im really scared. Can u hare your experience? Thanks
