This is my first time posting! I've read so many reviews and informative information I had a question of my own. Has anyone experienced increased hyperpigmentation and pimple marks staying red and healing slower as a result of being on birth control? I've been back on Mononessa(generic ortho cyclen) for around 3 mo's now for my acne as a result of stopping the pill. I don't remember having this problem when I took it last year. It was a year and half break I took from it. Also shouldn't the pill start helping by now?
its possible! different sex hormones have different effects on wound healing. the fact that birth control can deplete vitamins might also play a role in the fact that your hyperpigmentation is taking longer to fade. i would say after 3 months you probably should notice a difference in your acne (but myabe it takes longer , everyone is different) x
Thanks!! It must be my hormones then. I hate it. They take forever to go away now.
I've seen slight improvement, had a bad initial breakout though so everything is still healing. Maybe month 4 will be my month:)
keep us updated! my gynecologist wants me on the pill because i barely get my period..when i do it's very very light, like 2 days...i'm trying to avoid the pill if i can get my hormones under control naturally but she reccomennded ortho cyclen so that's the same as you my acne is pretty bad ever since my periods have been funky. do you have other side effects from the pill? i've never been on birth control and i feel like my body is really sensitive to hormonal fluctuations so i'd be a little nervous if i do decide to go on. i also already have some issues with depression so i'm worried about side effects

To be honest I wish I had never gone on the pill EVER!! I did right before I got married & when we decided to try for a baby I came off and my face went crazy! Worse than ever(except maybe when I was 13-15). The pill totally messed me up. Even hormone testing showed I was leveled out but my face still hasn't stopped breaking out. I've got a few scars&lots of marks now from all the breakouts I had. After 1.5 yrs, I gave in and went back on it just to see if it will clear me up again. Had a BAD initial breakout this time, but I didn't the first go around. I would have the odd pimple here and there before I took the pill the first round and birth control really made my skin wonderful I will give it that. & my periods and cramping was minimal, so I enjoyed that perk as well. The first week starting on the pill is normally the worst for me, mainly nausea(but everybody is different)! However, it does make me very emotional and I have struggled with depression as well & yes while your hormones are getting leveled out on the pill it makes things worse. From experienceI cry almost everyday. I'm hoping it's all leveled out for me soon!
I know this was a long post but if I can answer any other questions, I'll be glad too! I would advice stay off it if you can. But if your acne is hormonal it would probably def. help. Also ortho cyclen is good because it is a monophasic pill which means each pill has the same amount of hormones. Unlike some that have different amounts and can make acne worse in some people.

Thanks so much for the info!! My acne is pretty bad and so I would be going on the pill mainly to help with that because the acne is really affecting my life. I'm really trYING NOT to go on the pill it's really a last resort if I can't get my skin under control , don't see what more I can do about though, my hormones seem to hate me these days

Believe me I completely understand my acne has really acted up and bothered me awful for especially the past several months and affects my life too. People that don't have it don't understand. Ask your Dr. about spironactolone (sp?). I think it is supposed to help with hormonal acne as well. Does your skin get really oily?

actually i was on spiro for 3 weeks and had a bad experience. it helped my acne because it decreased my oil a lot but it made my skin really thin. i've been off it for 5 weeks but the hormonal effects have still stayed, but i assume i'll go back to my old skin soon.. (hopefully the thickness will come back, but so will the all the oil, i assume). spiro helped with my oil A LOT and without the oil i didn't get the big cysts that i had been getting before spiro. my real problem is that my body isn't making enough estrogen- not too much testosterone. my periods have been rly short, my appetite has decreased a lot ever since my periods have been out of wack, (usually estrogen makes you wanna eat more,) etc.. also blood test showed low estrogen. that's why my gyno wanted to "plop me on the pill" but i've just been really against it for so long. i really didn't like spiro it made me extremely dehydrated and gave me weird stomach problems.
Thanks!! It must be my hormones then. I hate it. They take forever to go away now.

Oh goodness yeah you def need to stay off the Spiro then. I've never taken it myself, just read about it. Hormones really stink, they can cause such problems. Although mine tested normal & my face still wouldn't stop breaking out so, seems like there's no winning. If you really want to stay off the pill You may could check into some herbal supplements, they seem to really help some people along with special diets, like paleo (low sugar).

when you got off BC and your skin was bad was it really oily? my skin (before spiro, and how i assume it will return,) was very oily and i'd get big cysts before my period and other breakouts throughout the month. never clear. i was talking to my friend who had been on sprintec (same as ortho) and she said she thought it made her skin oily which concerns me because i have a big oil problem . i guess the steady norgestimate can make the skin oily??? was your skin oily on the pill? i eat low sugar diet, mostly paleo although i do eat gluten occasionally because i don't have any problems with it. i never have dairy or sugar or processed junk food.

Oh goodness yes! My skin was good for 3 mos or so when I came off the pill & I was so happy cause I thought I wasn't going to have any problems-& then my skin went crazy. I got so oily-more oily than I've ever been before. I felt so nasty. It did finally get a little better but I was still oily oily. Esp depending on what time in my cycle I was on. I would break out awful around ovulation, clear up, then period break out again. Like you a never ending cycle. No birth control def. helps control my oil. I've already gotten way less oily since being on the pill. And it's summer in GA so high humidity and heat but it's still helping. I think the oil is what helped keep me so broken out. The Ortho doesn't cause me to be more oily at all. It helps me! If you decide to take it it may be worse at first whil your hormones are getting adjusted, it stinks:/ but it's normal. Mines just now getting better after bad initial breakout. I just finished 3 mos.
Thanks!! It must be my hormones then. I hate it. They take forever to go away now.
I've seen slight improvement, had a bad initial breakout though so everything is still healing. Maybe month 4 will be my month:)

when you got off BC and your skin was bad was it really oily? my skin (before spiro, and how i assume it will return,) was very oily and i'd get big cysts before my period and other breakouts throughout the month. never clear. i was talking to my friend who had been on sprintec (same as ortho) and she said she thought it made her skin oily which concerns me because i have a big oil problem . i guess the steady norgestimate can make the skin oily??? was your skin oily on the pill? i eat low sugar diet, mostly paleo although i do eat gluten occasionally because i don't have any problems with it. i never have dairy or sugar or processed junk food.
I just finished 3 mos.
good to hear!!!!!! about emotional aspects of the pill... i can deal with feeling a little sad or down, but i'm very fearful of extreme feelings of depression or anxiety or insomnia... also the risk of blood clots is no joke. i know 2 young girls who had strokes from BCP. anyway, i've had uncontrollable panic attacks in the past when i was going through other hormonal/ weird body changes and i NEVER want to feel like that again. i'm worried the hormones would make me go crazy (like they do to so many people..) i finally feel good now and i'm sleeping well so i don't want to mess that up!! but most likely as soon as the spiro wears off, my cysts and oil will be back!!!! i feel so trapped. i set up an appointment for accupuncture so maybe that will somehow be magical for my hormones but who knows, i doubt it. a year ago my skin was so clear and i was so confident and loving life!!! now i never want to see anyone!!!! acne is literally the devil . little bumps i can take care of with topicals and stuff but the major cysts can NOT be covered with makeup and are too painful to deal with
