Hormonal Acne Making Me Depressed

Hi guys just joined today because I've suddenly developed what I presume is hormonal acne and it's getting me so down. I had bad acne when I was a teenager and for the next 9/10 years I took dianette then yasmin. I got pregnant with my first baby and got terrible acne then it disappeared when I got past 1st trimester. Same thing hapened with my 2nd pregnancy and ive been pill-free for nearly 18 months with only maybe 1-2 spots per month now at the beginning of December my skin erupted and I don't understand it. I started yasmin again but stopped because I have a strong family history of breast cancer. In the past few weeks ive tried Duac and clarithromycin cream, sudocrem and now I'm trying bio oil for the scars. Doc also prescribed doxycycline and ive been on them for 2 weeks but they're making me get stomach problems and are just not working. Everyday I'm getting new spots which never have a head and hurt. Each spot leaves a red mark no matter how small it was. At the moment I only have 2 big painful spots but my face is a mess. I feel paranoid and it's making me angry and snappy because I feel so disgusting. The acne is only really on my lower cheeks and jaw so am I right in thinking that's hormonal? What would make me suddenly get like this. I used to be able to go out without foundation etc now just trying to hide these red marks and spots is a daily mission. I've been dairy free for 2 weeks as well with no joy. I'm past myself with worry over the state of my face :'( I'm enclosing some pics (sorry they are sideways I don't know how to change them on my phone)

Help anyone?

Hey. I got the same thing suddenly in my early twenties. I had acne in my teens but I could clear it with bc perfectly. This time around bc didn't help. What helped me is Inositol. I take 900mg a day and it's cut down my breakouts by 70% on good months. It's safe to take and had no side effects for me other than drowsiness which went away in a few months.

Hi, I understand how you feel; even though I'm 19. It can really get you down, apologies I don't have any remedies to give you as I haven't really found my 'acne cure' yet either. However, I can tell you that don't be trying out too many products - Duac did clear up my spots but there was no way possible to completely stop myself from getting raised bumps; once I had a raised bump that was it - I applied duac. It was temporary; so do try Primrose Oil pills, Vitamin A, Vitamin D. This did help me, but I don't really know what my acne cause is as its all over my face. Your type of acne is definitely hormonal so these should make a significant change to how many spots you get. In my first week I had seen significant results; people told me my acne was clearing up. So do try this and don't allow it to get you down, I know how it feels having clear skin one day and looking back on the 'clear skinned' photos and having a total massive outburst. I hope it gets better hun xx

Thank you I'm at the docs today and will ask about this :) im also going to ask about retinoid cream to see if that helps.

It's OTC btw so you don't need a prescription. I asked my obgyn about it before I started taking it and she had literally nothing to say about it.

Updates?

If oral antibiotics are giving you trouble I'd ask about a topical antibiotic instead like clindamycin or ethromycin, just to help calm things down. I think a retinoid might help you too.

I see you are taking doxy that has to be taken on a full stomach so make sure you eat a nice meal before you take it everyday. If you are having trouble on that you can try switching to Keflex or some other type of antibiotic that might not bother you as much. They do take some time to start working but once they do they usually work pretty darn well.

Also you need some sort of exfoliation so any sort of AHA, BHA or retinoid will help you out with that.

For the hormonal part since you don't want to take the pill I would look into spironolactone. One thing I noticed with being off the pill for years is that my hormones were never going to just naturally go back to normal as much as I wanted them to.

Try to stay strong even though its hard. It will get better once you get a good regimen down and you are get the hormones sorted out. Sending you hugs!

Hi guys thank you for your messages. Tracy I really appreciate all your advice it's so helpful. Just an update ... I thought the doxycycline was working but I've suddenly got 3 new spots however they're not really painful red cystic jaw ones thank God!! I went to see my doc and he said to continue with doxy and basically that's it. I'm actually wondering whether my acne could be due to gluten sensitivity or coeliac disease because along with some digestion probs I also have iron deficiency anaemia, ive lost 8lb and of course acne. I'm having a blood test to determine whether I have this soon and also a hormonal screen to see what's going on. X

i think when i first started taking doxy it took a few months to kick in so definitely give it more time. so do you take something for the anemia? i thought i had gluten issues and everything else and spent a lot of time and money trying everything you can think of and nope it was just hormonal acne. i had various rounds of blood work and everything came out fine but then again i read the saliva test is the most useful and i think they would need to do it everyday for say a month to get good results. i hope that the meds kick in soon for you and you are very welcome! if you ever need to talk i am here.
