I am a 25 years old male suffering from acne since the age of 13.

I think my acne is hormonal because absolutely nothing had worked before.

My acne are mostly deep cyst which takes long time to heal and it had left a lot of scars.

Recently about 9 days ago, i started on spironolactone, 75mg spread equally throughout 3 dose a day.

I know that men should not take spironolactone as it may cause some feminizing effect due to anti androgen properties.

But i already pass that, i would try anything and everything to get my skin cleared.

So far, there has not been any changes to my body

Things was going alright for the first 4 days and suddenly i start to break out horribly. And until now, I'm still breaking out everyday (about 12 to 14 deep cysts).

The breakout was all over my face (mostly concentrated on my jaw and chin) and these were deep cyst which cause a lot of swelling and pain, many of which were filled with pus. I even feel the pain when opening my mouth to eat. I never had such a horrible breakout ever in my life.

I read and understood that a lot of people experience initial breakout from spironolactone. But were the breakouts this horrible?

Or is spironolactone not suitable for men hence the breakout?

I'm really contemplating to stop taking spironolactone. It had already screwed up my life and I'm afraid i couldn't take this shit anymore.

I never knew guys can get prescribed spiro. I know for women it blocks androgen hormones to prevent acne baldness weight gain and other symptoms especially in women who have pcos. U should always give a new treatment at least 12 weeks before giving up.

Spironolactone are also prescribed to male with heart problems

I know for a matter of fact that spironolactone is working as my face turn from oily to almost no oil production at all.

My skin is now dry and even flaking.

bt i still get new acne cyst formed even without any oil production

Acne cyst are formed from excessive . Production, dry skin cells blocking the pores, and p. Acne bacteria. What is you skin regimen like? May be you need a retiniod to help normalize skin exfoliation to prevent clog pores. Just cause your skin is not oily anymore don't mean your pores can't get clogged. And make sure you use facial wash not regular bars of soap.

Basically i just use cetaphil facial wash twice a day and put bp at night.

Is there any other things that i might need?

WillYour regimen is fine but its not working so maybe you do need a retiniod to normalize the shedding of your skin. also spiro takes time and causes more breakouts at the first start of use. Give spiro anothe month and stick with your regimen. If you still have no results talk to your doctor about tretinion. I don't know if you have health insurance but tretinion is generic for Retin A and it cost me $50 for a tube at walmart. Your regular physician can prescribe it if you can't see a dermatologists. Tretinion comes in a gel or cream ands starts at 0.25%. At fist some get initial breakout for the first 2-3weeks and some don't. Everyone will have a different experience. For me I'm on accutane at the moment 2 round for cystic acne. Maybe you can look into that as a last resort if all other medicines have failed.

I wouldn't take spironolactone if I were you, especially since you are male and taking that much. Did you know that transsexual men take it to help them transition into womanhood? There's a black market for it.

If I were you, I would look into natural anti androgens like DIM and saw palmetto. Men tend to have success with saw palmetto, you should research it.

I have tried saw palmetto with no success.

transsexual men took it in excess dosage, usually above 200 mg

anyway i decided to stop taking. this thing screw up my life

i broken out into severe cyst. one of which is twice the size of a dime (not exaggerating)

I agree with WishClean. I'd stop the spiro if I was you.
