Acne After Stopping Yasmin

Hi been around here a while but thought its time I post. I stopped taking Yasmin last august and since then my skin has been getting progressively worse. I was put on the pill at 17 to help with acne, which it did very well but after ten years I decided enough was enough. I don't have cystic acne, it's mainly whiteheads and clogged pores, with the odd bigger spot (more and more in last few weeks)

I've been given some finacea gel from the doctor which I've been using for two weeks and if anything I've been getting more whiteheads and also taking evening primrose oil and just started with zinc, been looking into agnus castus too, does anyone think this will help? Any advise much appreciated, it's really getting me down.

Have you tried Dan's regimen?

If it's whiteheads/clogged pored then Dan's regimen should definitely be effective.

Sounds like glycolic acid and salicylic acid might do it for you and would be less irritating though...

I am also noticing a terrible difference in my skin since stopping yasmin but they just changed the generic name its same dose, so im not sure why but ever since Christmas my skin has taken a turn for the worse and to have just turned 32 its a real downer for me :( I have been tested on my hormones and sure enough I am very hormonal, so I have since started taking herpanacine pills twice a day has only been a week tho so no signs of improvement as of yet as its too early. I hope you find a regime that will work for you :):)

Wow, I literally got on this site to figure out how to deal with the same situation.

I was put on Yasmin when I was 23, to deal with terrible PMS. I would take it for 3-4 months, stop for one, and take it for another 3-4 months. I never suffered acne as a teen or before the pill, and my skin looked and felt amazing after I got on Yasmin. Anyway, decided to come off it last September permanently (at 25). I started getting yeast infections for the first time in October (not sure if it's related) and since early December I've been breaking out pretty badly. My jawline and chin look terrible, and there are these tiny bumps all around my sideburns and cheeks. I haven't had cystic acne yet but after a mini meltdown I visited the dermatologist, who prescribed Acne Aid, Erythromycin topical gel (for mornings) and Curatio Kojic skin lightening cream (for old scars at night). I live in Colombo, Sri Lanka, by the way. I was also asked to stay away from chocolate and nuts.

Anyway, this regimen has helped somewhat in controlling breakouts, although I still get one or two pimples a week. The bumps are still there and I'm not sure how long it will take for them to stop appearing. The scars are lightening, thankfully. Only I'm still not sure if I'll have another flare-up before my next period, which is due in two weeks. Guess I'll know only then. In addition I also take a zinc + multivitamin supplement, evening primrose oil, vitamin e and biotin.

I've also cut out dairy, eggs and processed foods. I'm a lacto-ovo-vegetarian but I've been making sure to eat foods that are particularly good for brightening the skin: tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, pineapple, sweet potato, avocado, papaya and plenty of leafy greens. A lot of people don't believe me when I say this, but I've found that drinking coconut water actually aggravates my acne, so I've stopped doing that.

Having said all of that, would be great to hear from anyone who has had the same experience and know if eventually the breakouts came under control or stopped. I know I'll be totally stressed - not a good thing - till my skin goes back to what it was.

What helped me when I got off birth control for good....maybe it will help you too, but it really depends on your particular imbalance.

- I took vitex/ agnus castus to regulate my cycles, and since then my periods have been regular, even after I stopped taking vitex. For me, the acne came back when I stopped taking vitex, so If you can tolerate it and it's working for you (can take up to 2 months), I suggest you lower the dose after 6 months and keep taking a small amount.

- I took evening primrose with vitex, but be careful with evening primrose because it can worsen acne if your omegas are balanced

- I took acidophilus supplements (probiotics) to help restore gut flora and aid with digestion.

- I took a multivitamin (solgar gold-v, if I remember correctly.) ---> My favorites are: solar's earth source vitamins & herpanacine.

- Started drinking a lot more water, but not with meals to help digestion.

- Regular exercise and relaxation

A more mild supplement than vitex is inositol, which I highly recommend. Check out my thread on that for more details.

I also feel like birth control actually helps regulate my acne. I've stopped using it for certain periods and I always break out whenever I do. But I like to stay on it anyways as I am sexually active and don't want any unplanned pregnancies lol
