Puffy Face With The Pill!

I decided to give in and start taking the pill again, my doctor recommended a very low-dose one called 'Loette'. I get very oily skin with my cycle and acne. It's a never ending battle. Also I need birth control!

I had high hopes for it! Since day one of taking it I have had an incredibly noticeable puffy face and it is actually becoming painful swelling, more prominent on one side. This brings me back to years ago I had tried Yasmin and Levlin and had the same thing! But just lived with it for years!

Also noticed that I had hives on my stomach the other day and my eyes are incredibly itchy. Beginning to think this sounds like I have an allergy to the synthetic hormones in birth control pill.

Back to the drawing board :(. Has this happened to anyone else?

I came across loette a long time ago when researching bcp, and if you search the .org you will see it's actually not the best for acne due to the progestin it contains. It may be low dose, but it's still a low dose of hormones you may not need. Hives are a sign of an allergic reaction, and so are the other symptoms. You should ask your doctor to switch you to something else or maybe try another form of contraception. It seems that the most common bcp allergies come from synthetic estradiol or levonorgestrel - if you can find the common ingredient in all bcps you have taken in the past and avoid it, that might reduce your allergic reaction. If you are getting hives and do not do anything to prevent them (i.e. remove the trigger) then that can lead to inflammation, digestive issues, and high histamines.

From: http://www.news-medical.net/drugs/Loette.aspx When you must not take Loette

Do not take Loette if you have an allergy to:
Any medicine containing ethinyloestradiol or levonorgestrel
Any of the ingredients listed at the end of this leaflet
Any other similar medicines (such as other oral contraceptives).
Some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction may include:
shortness of breath
wheezing or difficulty breathing
swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body
rash, itching or hives on the skin.

I know it is not the best for acne but it is good for moderate acne. After 8 days of taking loette my skin is already producing a lot less oil and feels more normal. Progestin is okay for me I think (natural progesterone anyway) because during ovulation I have the most clear skin, I think I may already be estrogen dominant? Hence even a small amount of estrogen in the pill is making me puffy? I am not as moody as I was on Yasmin, a little teary but still getting used to it. I am really disappointed because I was hoping to remove the nightmare copper IUD and stick with a low-dose birth control! It would be a great pill if I wasn't allergic to it or retaining water! The pharmacist said it could very well be water retention but strange that it seems to be localized (my hands are a little puffy but not too bad). He suggested I could have hayfever but already took antihsitamine with minor difference and have not had hayfever all year long and happened just as I took the pill (also hives). So I am going to skip it tomorrow and see if my face goes down!
