Chin Acne And My Mirena Iud

I had a Mirena hormonal IUD for about 5 years (almost the max time) and during that time got weird symptoms. In addition to getting more chin area acne (I never had much to begin with) I started getting dark hairs on my chin and cheeks. I've read the hair growth is a side effect and may never go away, but I am not aware of the acne being a side effect. Usually most hormonal birth controls are beneficial to acne. Have any of you ladies used this form of birth control? And if so, what side effects did you get and was acne one of them?

Mirena uses a highly androgenic progestin and has ZERO estrogen.

So the progestin is stimulating androgens, which create acne. Estrogen also helps counteract androgens, but Mirena has zero, so it's no help there either.

Hi! I've used the Mirena IUD for about 3 1/2 years.

I got almost the same symptoms as you plus a bunch more! I was suuuuper tired all the time, angry, etc.

But the chin acne was the worst for me....I would get weird little cysts all over my chin and jawline area plus more neck acne than ever before.

I got it taken out about 4 months ago and have been on my new birth control for about 3 months. In the month that I wasn't on birth control, my chin acne started to subside and my neck acne almost disappeared. I was still breaking out a little, though. Then I got onto Beyaz and my acne is going away more and more as the weeks go by :D I'm being gentle with my skin to help the process and fading my red marks with AHA and the Olay facial brush.

So sorry about your Mirena experience. I wish I had known (and did more research) before I started it.

Thanks Green Gables, I didn't realize that the Mirena had nothing that helped acne in it, and even hindered. Oh well.

Heitea, thank you for sharing your experience. I also had mood side effects too. I had some moderate depression that is getting better and some pretty bad hormonal mood swings and I was also quite tired and unenthusiastic. Also a LOW sex drive. What's the point of birth control, lol?!
I'm inpatient for the symptoms of the outstanding acne to go away, but I'm thinking at this points it's more than just the Mirena, and that I have some natural acne that's developed and will linger.

Your symptoms are so similar to mine!! Ah! I definitely had super low sex drive, too! Depressing...lol. Unfortunately, it hasn't quite gotten back to normal. Meh...no good--especially because I just got engaged! You're right, what's the point of birth control, then?! haha

Are you on a different birth control now? Or do you still have the Mirena in? I also have "natural" acne, too...haha, but the worst of it was definitely caused by hormonal imbalances that occurred while on the Mirena. I'm so happy to no longer have jawline/chin acne. I think the reason I was getting the cysts on my chin, jawline, and neck was because of little hairs that were springing up and becoming imbedded.

As Greengables said, it definitely does not have any acne-helping hormones in it, whereas Beyaz has lots of acne-helping hormones in it! In fact, it has estrogen AND a type of hormone that sort of blocks androgens (the hormones that cause facial hair and acne). So, it's really doing me a lot of good!

I'm not sure if I would see the type of improvement that I'm seeing now if I had just simply taken the Mirena out and not started a new birth control.

It sounds like you're having similar symptoms that I did, so look into Beyaz or Yasmine. I think either of those two would help!

I'm going without birth control at all now. I feel like that my body needs some hormone free time.

I''m going to try a year without birth control before going back on one. The sex drive isn't very quick to come back so it hasn't been a big issue and we just use condoms.

I would definitely get the acne around the hairs that were coming in. Has the Beyaz lessened the facial hair that you were getting? I'll definately look into it!

Thanks!

Yeah, I was definitely planning on taking a "hormone-free" break, too. Then my sister got pregnant (waaaay too young!) and I decided just to go on it again. haha It scared me a little. I still think it's a good idea to let your body sort of "reset" its hormones if you're being super careful not to get pregnant. We're very careful, but I just did not want to risk it at the moment.

Beyaz is definitely helping with the hairy issue. I'm not getting any more at all. I was getting 2-3 tiny dark hairs around my nipples (ugh sorry...), and they're slowly going away too. As in, I pluck them and they're not coming back anymore. biggrin.png yay for no hairy nipples! lol. But yeah, no more of the same hairs on my face at all and definitely no more ingrown hairs or zits either.

That'll do it :) Pregnancy when you're not ready is scary. It's a big risk. I had a breast reduction a couple of years ago and they took away the original around the nipple skin so I didn't get that but I did get some on my breasts and chest area between my breasts. Thanks for all the info about your experience!

I had the Mirena inserted October 17. I was warned that the insertion of it would hurt terribly and just as they warned it really hurt. Bad. However, I figured it'd be worth it. The first month I had it I had constant pain in my abdomen and constant bleeding (I was told this would last 3-6 months so I didn't mind). Other than that I wasn't warned about many other side effects and I failed to do my own research on it.

I have always struggled with mild acne but I had just figured out the right diet for me and my skin was flawless for awhile. Around mid November, about a month after I had the Mirena inserted my face began to break out. TERRIBLY! My chin/jaw line area was covered in zits and cystic acne (never had cystic acne till then). I'm talking clumps of pimples. It was awful and absolutely painful (my face hurt so bad!). I seriously lost all confidence and actually quit my job. (Being a cocktail waitress, it was embarrassing to be seen with my face the way it was). I began to do research and realized it was most definitely the Mirena that had caused my skin to break out. I set up an appointment immediately with my doctor to have it removed and with a dermatologist to get on medication. I had it removed on December 5 and it is now December 17. My face has finally started to clear up! It's not all the way back to normal. I still have pimples and scars :( I hope within the next month my face will be pimple free. I have also gained my sex drive back and my moods are stable (my boyfriend appreciates this) lol

I highly advise anybody who has Mirena and can't stand the acne it's caused them to get it removed. From all the research I've done I believe it's the only way to clear your face.

Good luck!

I had the opposite with my Mirena. My skin was fine while I had it and now that I've had it removed my skin is awful!! I didn't have acne before I had it put in so I can't figure out what's going on.

Yeah, for some reason, it can also do the opposite to other people! But if you have a history of acne, you're supposed to be warned that it might make it worse. If you don't have acne already, the Mirena doesn't usually cause problems (while it's in!). But it can mess up your hormones when you take it out! You may have estrogen dominance now...you could research that a little bit. I'm not an expert by any means-- I just went through a crazy period where all I did was look up symptoms of Mirena and causes of acne from the Mirena. haha

Would estrogen dominance and androgen dominance be a possibility? I was starting to think I have PCOS bc I have all the symptoms but I've never had my hormones tested. I don't want to go back on BC so I've been researching herbal supplements and I came across DCI. Do you know anything about this?

Does anyone else get dry patches of skin on their face too? I have ALWAYS had beautiful skin and now it's blotchy, red, dry, zitty and now has a ton of zit scars ever since I put the mirena in. It's stressful!
