Is There Any Benefit To Starting Low On Spiro And Ramping Up If Needed?

Hi everyone! First time posting here, although I've been reading the site a lot over the past year as I experienced a gradual worsening of my adult acne in my 30s. sad.png

I have used spironolactone in my mid 20s but went off it for a while and am starting again. I never took more than 50mg/day and it did a pretty nice job of clearing me up.

Since my acne became really bad this past year, I again got a prescription for 50mg/day but for the past two weeks I've only been taking half a 25mg pill a day (12.5mg/day). I'm pretty small (105 lbs) and I figured I might still get good results from a smaller dosage so I wanted to try that first and increase dosage if I'm not seeing results. I like the idea of keeping myself on the lowest possible dosage that my body needs.

Anyone have any experience with ramping up like this? And has anyone had good results on just 12.5 or 25 mg/day? Do you get another initial breakout everytime you increase dosage? That's the last thing I want since I seem to already be experiencing a mild IB from half a pill.

Thanks guys!

My dermatologist ramped me up from 50mg to 100mg. 50mg didn't work for me, but I've seen people on here clear on 25mg and 50mg doses, so it doesn't hurt to try.

Awesome, thanks for the response. I'm going to take it slow and see how I do on 12.5 mg for a month or so. Note sure if it will do anything, but would rather start small.

Actually, after reading your spiro post, I think I'm going to try 12.5 in morning and 12.5 in afternoon for a couple of months. 25mg/day is still pretty low but I'll start there and hope that it helps.

Let us know about your results with such a low dosage.. when i was 120 lbs i broke out when i lowered it to 75 mg but now i weight less than you do and still use the same dosage 100 mg. It's the second time and it hasn't completely worked yet so i don't want to try to reduce it now.

I will def keep you updated. Going to stick to 25 for a month at least. Was your weight loss related to the spiro at all or other factors?

No, i stopped spiro to see how my skin will react, of course it started coming back to were it was before.. i tried to avoid certain food that are known causes of acne such as dairy and high in sugars foods, bread, nuts. I saw an improvement but it wasn't anything near to what spiro did. It was restrictive, it wasn't healthy and hadn't the results i wanted. And of course the battle with my mom trying to make me eat things i was afraid that would break me out.. So i think it was either being starved and with acne or take spiro again. There are some alternatives with supplements but i couldn't experiment while seeing the perfect skin spiro gave me being destroyed.

I understand. My boyfriend laughs when I tell him I can't eat something because it gives me acne. I don't think he really believes it does, but he is sweet and agrees to help me avoid those foods. If I cut out all the problem foods I have (nuts, soy, leafy greens, fish, too much vitamin B, and more) I will be relatively clear, but I feel so deprived it's not worth it anymore. And over the past year, I feel like even restricting the foods isn't working like it used to. Hormones too out of control!!

I was on 25 mg and it did help my moderate acne! I wouldn't say I wasnt 100% clear but more like 85% clear but unfortunately my hair just kept falling out on any dose of spiro so I quit it. although it is a godsend for acne! many women are 100% clear on 50 mg and that is a very low safe dose so I would ramp it up to 50 mg and when you clear up, lower to 25mg and see if it still stays clear. good luck! oh and every time I messed with my dose, I broke out because of the change.

Thanks for the advice - I started 25mg yesterday and will stick with it until any IB seems to be gone and see where I'm at and whether I want to increase to 50mg. Like you, I have moderate acne, not severe, but it leaves scars and is super frustrating. I'm getting acne in areas I don't usually get it - behind ears, around lips, lower back. So I'm pretty sure this is an IB of some sort from the spiro. Hope it clears sooner than later!

The same with mine. But other people like my relatives who never had acne don't believe me and act like i am crazy. They can't understand. Yesterday i ate something with cheese, a small amount, and i can feel 2 painful spots, the one is more like a nodule but not swollen yet. They still refuse to notice the connection. And then there is the jealousy, my sisters can eat croissants, chocolate, (homemade) pizza and drink milk the same day and still be clearer that me..

It so sucks when other people enjoy clear skin no matter what they do and you have to struggle to even keep it at a minimum. Others don't understand but you just gotta do what's best for you. Not sure how old you are, but you are your own person and you deserve to do what will make you feel your best. :) You'll be a better person for having to deal with this challenge. Your sisters will have other challenges, it all evens out. :)
