Spiro Resistence Or Increased Dose? Please Help!

I've been on 100mg of spiro for three years with great success. Several weeks ago I started getting cysts, so I doubled my dose hoping that would prevent anymore from forming. Unfortunately, I'm still getting cysts. Also my period has gone crazy- irregular, more frequent. I'm hoping I haven't become resistant! Any experiences upping your dose or the experiences with the same problem/worry of resistance would be appreciated!

Any long term users of spiro have any insight into breakouts after years of clear skin?

I can't relate to your situation but I would recommend that if you started breaking out on the 100 mg then maybe your hormones changed a bit so why not just increase to 125 or 150 but not anymore than that until you give the increased dose like 3-4 months to see if it will help. you shouldn't have just jumped from 100 mg to 200 mg because that can put your body in shock causing a bad breakout (flaring up the problem more). go gradually. you can't become resistant to spiro; its not possible. you just need to adjust your dose and you will clear again. just take 150 mg for like 4 months and you will clear. your body is just going through an IB from the adjusted dose and it will pass in a couple of months.

Thank you. Honestly, the support on this forum makes me feel much better. My derm acts annoyed to answer any of my questions. I asked if one can become resistant to spiro and he literally said "I suppose it's possible." and walked away.

I bumped up my spiro, irrationally, because I wanted clear skin for back to school. Now I realize that was probably a mistake.

Over a couple weeks I have weaned back down to 150mg, but I'm still having issues with nodular breakouts on my chin. I also did have a breakout after three years of clear skin in the first place, which is why I initially increased my dose. So I'm not sure if the increased dose exacerbated my acne or it was going to be coming back regardless. Also, when I started spiro years back my IB only lasted a few weeks, so I'm confused about what's going on with this issue I've been dealing with since June/July. Any insight or shared expereinces would be helpful.... :S

I am not expert and i don't know if i will help.. I know that there can be a resistance to the anti-hypertension function of diuretics but i don't know about the anti-androgen effect of spiro.. could you try and change your medication-birth control for a while and see what happens? Or perhaps go off it completely to make your body sensitive again? I hope there is no resistance because i use it too.

Birth control was a disaster for me, so unfortunately not an option. Good suggestion though. I hope there is no resistance too :S.

i wish there was a more reliable suggestion because we don't know for sure the cause and your doctor doesn't like questions or adding something to your treatment. Could you consult another doctor? Perhaps an endocrinologist or gynaecologist would know more about hormonal acne. My dermatologist didn't even know spiro as acne treatment.
