Breakout Pattern

I'm currently on birth control (tri previfem) and doxycycline (once daily). I've noticed that my skin is clear for the most part except for the second half/very end of my period and for the week right after my period ends.

Can anyone help me figure out what's wrong? Hormonal? Which hormone is out of control during that time frame?

In most women, estrogen and progesterone levels dip down after their period. In fact, that's what makes your period end!

So, when this happens, the ratio of your androgens (male hormones) and estrogen hormones is a little askew.

Androgens (testosterone, etc) are pretty much what cause acne, so when your estrogen and progesterone levels are low, you can see more of the effects of your androgens.

This is actually quite normal for a female, which is why lots of girls complain about breaking out near their period. Some birth controls regulate hormones a little better than others, and it seems like yours is doing a pretty decent job.

:D hope this helped! I'm on Beyaz right now to regulate my hormones! Only the first week of the first pack, so we'll see how it goes :P

Are there any supplements I can take to control this? Taking BC and doxycycline hyclate but still getting active break outs during this time period is pretty aggravating/disappointing.

If you don't want to change birth control pills, you can take anti androgenic herbs such as saw palmetto and stinging nettle.

Some women find DIM, vitex, or maca root helpful, however reviews are mixed. None of them are really anti androgenic and simply purport to "balance" your hormones...doesn't work all the time. Personally I would go the saw palmetto route.
