Im in a really confusing and unsure situation. I began dianette in October/November 2011, so ive been on it for a year and a few months. Like everyone I had an initial breakout and then from May my acne was like 99.9% gone. My skin was amazing throughout May and June. Then in July my chin was breaking out constantly, especially around my time of the month. I got a little frustrated but just kept telling myself itll clear soon. It carried on throughout August and by September my chin was breaking out all the time, not just once a month. I was getting, and still am, cystic under the skin spots round my mouth/chin. So since September it has been like this and were now in Janurary.
Im so confused by it and wonder whether I should come off dianette?!!? I find my skin isnt too bad during my week break off the pill and a few days when I start up the pill again.. but by the second week and the third week ive got painful spots all around my chin, and now my lower cheeks as well.
My problem is.. I dont know whether this is normal. Like, am I expecting too clear skin on dianette? Do you other dianette users(1 year plus) still get breakouts a lot?! Or should this not be happening, is dianette not working for me?
Id love to come off the pill as it upsets my mood as well, but Im worried(as weve all heard so many horror stories) my acne would be a million times worse if I came off. However, I dont want to be taking a pill that could be causing hormonal breakouts all the time??
I dont know, Im utterly confused. I saw my doctor in December time and she said I should just go on accutane as nothing else seems to be working. So im waiting for my dermatologist appointment letter to come through (still undecided if id go on accutane), but my doctor said to just stay on dianette for now. Sometimes I just wanna get off all pills so I know Im in control of the acne, ya know? And I can see what works best for me. Im worried dianette may be making these cystic chin breakouts occur or maybe im being too fussy and dianette is doing as good a job as it can?
Wondering if anyone has any experience or knowledge on the topic? Ive posted dianette questions online before but dont really get direct answers. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read this! Sometimes I think maybe I should come off Dianette and leave it a month or two for my hormones to return to their natural balance, and then.. if I still have bad acne, I could maybe try the acne.org skin regime I hate messing with my body for acne treatments eg tablets etc because I feel its not addressing the root cause and its a temporary solution my body is dependent on and relapse is likely after I quit the treatment. I dont know if im just being paranoid.
hi!
are you sure the breakouts are related to dianette? most of the time birth control is supposed to level out the hormones and clear up breakouts. I took diane 35 (same as dianette) and my skin cleared but i got a lot of other side effects and went off it. I heard you are not supposed to be on diane for a long time anyway, please look this up on google. It increases depression or mood problems if taken for a long period of time.
Also, do you feel your acne is hormonal? accutane can clear your skin but be careful it has a lot of side effects.
you can always try switching brands of BCP pills.

hello! well at first i tried to think of anything else the breakouts could be related to, but i havent change face routine or lifestyle or anything like that. and the fact the acne has been there since july now.. i honestly dont know what else it could be related to.
yes apparently you shouldnt be on it for longer than around two years, but im only at about one and a half.. but i suppose yes i'd have to come off it soon anyways.
i definitely feel my acne is hormonal, my forehead is 100% clear all the time, my cheeks 98.9% clear and then my very lower cheek/jawline/chin are constantly breaking out in pimples.
my gp didnt really want to give me another birth control pill... i guess she feels its not worth it because nothing has worked so far, really don't know...
there are lots of other options. My dermatologist told me to go on BCP again because i have really bad breakouts on my chin area (cysts) mid cycle and before my period. she said acne in the lower region of the face is 100% hormonally related. We are girls, its easier to treat than guys, we can take BCP at least. There are other pills you should try, Yasmin/Yaz or belara (which i dont think is available in the UK but its good for acne and oiliness, and is what i take) and if thats not enough, try Spiro. It has cured a lot of people with hormonal acne.
about your gp - see another one? maybe you would be more comfortable speaking to someone else ?

thats the thing i dont get.. shouldnt being on a birth control pill STOP me from getting these mid cycle really bad cycstic breakouts?! confusing
there are a multitude of factors that lead to acne. After working out, do you wash your face properly? Do you remove your make up well at night? Are you eating anything that could potentially be triggering off acne (dairy etc) ? Have you had your hormone levels properly tested? Are you under an unusual ammount of stress?
im really good when it comes to my skin routine. I always wash my face before bed after working out and in the morning.. with a natural face wash and moisturiser(i dont use any chemical commerical brands) and i dont think its stress, as ive had this acne for around six months and theres been no change in lifestyle, skin routine, diet etc. which is why i cant figure it out
no, i havent had my hormone levels tested. maybe that is something i could look into getting done.. would that help me figure out the cause of my acne?
hi, im about to start dianette soon. i will let you guys know how it goes. i have been on it last year for 2 months only and it did clear up my skin perfectly. i had to stop i became severely depressed, couldnt sleep at night, lost my appetite/ weight. im willing to give it another go so ill see. i would rather try that first before accutane 10mg.
Larrissa, I,m going to tell you my own experience with Dianette35 in case I can help you. I have been taking dianette35 for 4 years, and I have never been acne free, but Dianette35 changed my skin from severe acne with huge and painful pimples to just pimples.
I didn't know what to do, I have tried every drug on the market, except Spiro because in Spain Spiro is not prescribed for acne. I decided to take spiro on my own, but I felt so week and fainted after 1 week because I have low pressure. If you don't have low blood pressure this can be an option for you.
Anyway, after this, I read every post on this forum looking for another option. The option is Zinc 50 mg, I started with 30 mg but after 2 month I upped my dosage to 50 mg zinc chelated and continue also with Dianette. It really helped me. I cant say I am acne free 100% but significantly much better than before.
My theory is that Dianette 35 was not inhibiting enough DHt in my case ( Although I know Dianette35 is the strongest one, the other bc pill didn't work for me) and I need more supplement inhibiting DHt, in this case zinc but you can also tried saw palmetto.
