Does anyone know what test can be done to test for hormonal acne?
I have had blood tests in the past done and they have come back completely normal.
I mentioned this to my GP when I was getting a referral for a derm and he said if it's hormonal acne (which he thinks I have) it won't show up on a blood test!
Is this true?..lol.
Thanks!
I had normal blood tests come back normal, but I recently had my hormone levels checked in a blood test, and my testosterone levels came back as high, which I believe to be the cause of my hormonal acne. Why my testosterone is high we don't know yet. It could be a number of things.
About a week ago I had more blood taken and it is being tested for 6 more hormonal related imbalances, and so I'm waiting to see if any other hormones are above normal.
So I really don't understand why they would say it won't show up on a blood test, when it seems like something they routinely do, according to my GP and endo doctors.
Here's the way my derm tested me. No medical testing involved.
She got the acne under control with antibiotics. Then asked me to watch when I broke out. If you break out around your period, you have hormonal acne. When hormonal acne gets bad enough, you break out all month so it's hard to tell. That's why she got it under control first, then had me watch. It is not uncommon for hormone tests to be negative when in fact hormones are causing the acne.
Thanks guys!
What does bcp stand for? Is it birth control pills? if so isn't that that what Spiro is??
I have had blood tests done twice before once by an derm and endo and both said I did NOT have high test testosterone levels, everything is completely normal.
Also have taken antibiotics and they did nothing.
When I was getting a referral for the derm the GP said that I should take Yasmine.
I have previously taken Diane 35 and it did nothing.
But he said most people either respond to one or the other.
Anyway have decided to wait for my derm appointment before starting Yasmine and see what they say.
Just if if was hormonal acne I want a test to show that is what it is...lol.
Anyone else have hormonal acne if so how was it diagnosed?

I have been diagnosed with hormonal acne as well but my testosterone levels are normal. This is why I am not sure if spiro would work for me. I took it for a couple of weeks only and it made me dizzy and dehydrated so I stopped.
Spiro is not a birth control it is a medication to lower your blood pressure that also reduces the level of testosterone as a side effect
