I am 42 years old and I have been utilizing Benzoyl Peroxide for about 20 years. Either through Proactive in the early 2000's to now "The Regimen" with Dan and Acne.org.
I decided in Feb of 2021 that I would end my relationship with Benzoyl Peroxide. This was due to the fact that I found some evidence that Benzoyl Peroxide could perpetuate the acne process.
By oxidizing your face, Benzoyl Peroxide builds the perfect environment for Squalene Peroxide to occur, which it was ultimately leads to a pimple.
It's been about 3 months since I started this process, COLD TURKEY.
I can tell you that it has been an awful 3 months. My skin has broken out more than it ever has in my life. It's likely the worst I've ever looked. It has taken a toll emotionally and mentally.
But I am resilient. And I really believe that my skin will eventually balance itself out.
I work out 6 days a week and I'm in pretty good health.
So far, it seems as though almost every pore on my face is broken out. I have huge large cysts and nodules.
I am still using the acne.org cleanser. I used it on other parts of my body, without Benzoyl Peroxide, and my chest and back have stayed pretty clear. So I'm not looking to change my soap at the moment. Going to stick with it.
This post will be my journal for this journey. Please partake. Thank you
I don't see any reason why acne would suddenly stop needing to be treated but if you want to try it that's obviously up to you. I know a lot of people think this way and want to go natural but how did you end up on it in the first place?
I can't remember why I stopped using it but I didn't use it for a very long time and I can tell you that I needed to go and buy some URGENTLY fairly recently when my acne exploded to ridiculous levels again and I was getting immediate scarring so I couldn't risk having acne. I ended up stopping it again but only by using other things and figuring out what was causing it. Like my other post says, rapeseed oil was causing me some of my acne and skin problems. Good luck anyway. Nobody knows why the skin does what it does and it could be it's final ever purge !

Hypochlorous (HOCL)spray could help. Tatoo artists and piercers use HOCL to help their clients heal cleanly. HOCL is produced by the human body is response to infection. It is highly effective against at least 23 strains of "bad" bacteria while not harming the "good" bacteria that is a normal part of the human skin environment. HOCL is also highly effective against fungus and viruses. HOCL kills the nymph form of demodex skin mites, a common skin parasite that can causeblackheads, pustules and papules if overpopulated. HOCL is used to clean and sterilize hospital ICUs, medical and dental offices. HOCLis a very weak acidbut not irritating to the skin. It soothes and promotes healing. It is considered safe with zero safety warnings.
There are numerous brands of HOCL that are good including Heyedrate, Occusoft Hypochlor and BrioTech. The BrioTech is recommended by tattoo artists and piercers to their clients to help them heal cleanly without infection. Its also one of the most affordable options out there.

I have been to multiple derms for my acne, and have been prescribed benzoyl peroxide frequently, but the common advice that I get is to NOT GO cold turkey with benzoyl peroxide, as it can lead to acne coming back stronger than before. I have always been told to slowly reduce the frequency of use and let your skin adjust to being off benzoyl peroxide. Maybe this is why you're breaking out a lot?
