A little while ago I had a huge breakout all over my face. I only ever get cystic pimples, no only one or two at a time on my cheeks, but I had breakouts all over the place. I ended up getting my period a week later and the breakouts slowly calmed down a little, down this time I was seeing my breakouts leave red marks that last a while.

Fast forward to now. I went to the dermatologist and he prescribed me minocycline 100mg twice a day, clindamycin, and told me to get a benzoyl peroxide wash. Then he told me to get a gentle wash from cerave for when Im not using the benzoyl peroxide. Ive been doing this for 19 days today. My skin was doing really great at first, and then about a week ago my skin started breaking out again. This time with lots of closed comedones. Since starting the treatment I havent then a large pimple at all, and I only got two normal pimples around the time of my period. Except I had a ton of closed comedones too, which I never had before. I figured it had to be something I was putting on my skin, and since my skin felt oily, I assumed it was the Cerave hydrating cleanser. I read about a few others who broke out in closed comedones from this. Today is the first day taking this out of my regimen, but my skin looks so bad.

I guess I was looking for reassurance, suggestions, or advice. Ive been feeling incredibly down lately, and i have to stop myself from crying all the time. I dont even want to leave the house. I feel even worse knowing that I probably made my skin worse with that cleanser. I really dont want to break out more than I already have, and I dont know what else to do. Right now Ive just been using the prescriptions and washing with benzoyl peroxide 4%. My forehead and nose are completely soft and smooth, but my cheeks and chin seem to be struggling. I know that its only been about two and a half weeks since I started anything, but when should I start seeing results? Is it possible that this is an initial breakout from the benzoyl peroxide or something? Should I talk to my dermatologist about changing up something or should I just stick it through for a month or so? Im incredibly stressed about the breakouts and even more stressed that Im getting red marks left behind.

First of all, I'm so sorry you're feeling this way. I know exactly how you feel as I was there last year too. It does sound like you're in the process of having your skin purge, so stick with it....unfortunately you need 2-4 months to REALLY know if something is working or not. Put your trust in it...and if it doesn't work, there's always hope. I literally never thought I'd get rid of my cystic acne and that this was my life, but I did get rid of...so don't give up hope. Hang in there <3
