Hi,

I have had acne for the past 3 years, I am 22, male.

The acne I have isn't like what most people have. I get acne under the skin and it is big and hard as a rock and pains when touched.

I have been following the Acne Regiment for the past month and a half but it doesn't seem to help.

Most of the time, the acne goes away after 2 - 3 weeks but pops up in another place. Sometimes it bursts open leaving a scar and its really frustrating.

Hello,

Hopefully I will be able to answer some of your questions. I would need to examine you obviously, but what you describe is termed nodular acne (referred to often incorrectly as nodulocystic acne). What you describe as "under the skin" is inflammation in the dermis or even the subcutis (lower down). Your left maxillary scarring is consistent with this dx. Isotretinoin (Accutane/Roaccutane) is the standard of care for this type of acne unless you have a contraindication. Ask about Accutane the next time you see your derm.

I have had severe acne for 15 years and I know all too well how much it can suck; stay strong my friend.

Best,

AMM

Thanks a lot for helping :) was just reading posts about taking Accutane, it seems like there are a lot of side effects which seem far worse than acne.  But if that's the only way out guess I'll have to go for it.
