So we started an expensive and aggressive approach. She started breaking out at 9. But it really became concerning at age 12 early this year when she began menstruating. We initially had her Tretinoin and a topical antibiotic, Clindamyacin. But three months of cycles, her face was covered. I took her to the dermatalogist and he created a treatment plan as we both agreed she was too young for hormone pills or Accutane.
*2x a week of Blue Light treatment
*1 Salicylic Peel every 2 weeks (in lieu of extractions as I did not want holes on her face that could potentially become scars)
*1 Smoothbeam every 3 weeks, on a week that had no Peel (targets sebaceous gland)
*Oral antibiotic
*Topical cream (epiduo forte 1x at night)
*Sulpher wash prescribed by doctor
*Elta sunscreen
after a month, we added a...
* Levulan PDT treatment after it all began. We expect 2-3 more Levulan PDTs to be scheduled 4 weeks apart after, depending how she reacts to this first one.
She had the Lev PDT 3 days ago and she is at the scabbing and peeling stage now. Redness and blistering and small, pus-filled whiteheads surfaced on Day 2 post treatment. So those have dried out. I see new skin healing. Pink. But any comodones that hadn't broken through before have dried up and dwindled to half their original size.
It is looking good. So far, and yes, prayers to the Lord whispered under my breath every day for feeling guilty that I gave her bad genetics, and torturing her with this regimen that no child her age should have to undergo.
It is expensive and costly, but I I want to get this managed before any scarring occurs, and luckily none has yet! I too suffered from acne and it wasn't as bad as hers when I was her age, and it really affected my self esteem and confidence, despite being successful today. I will let you know her progress, but I hope this helps other parents find alternative forms of treatment that may work.
And yes, prior to it all I had her using essential oils, to clwan her face, combat oil with good oil...from mixtures of Tee Tree, Neem, Emu, Frankincense, etc...with Hemp oil as the carrier oil as it has 0 comodegenic rating. It helped during the 9-11age but with puberty, the battle took on a whole other level!
Those interested in costs, you can negotiate bulk pricing discount with your dermatalogist.
Salicylic Peels and Blue Light Photodynamic Therapy cost us $50 per treatment (if purchased in bulk of 6 treatments, otherwise it was $60 per)
Smoothbeam laser cost $250 ea treatment
Levulan PDT cost $750 ea treatment
Hello,
I am writing as a 12 year old myself, my acne is severe. I started getting a few pimples at the age of 8 , as I was young and had a lot of confidence , I didn't see it as that much of a deal. Over years my acne got worse due to the picking, popping and touching I did (Which I regret doing , DON'T TOUCH!) and my self esteem lowered. The past few weeks have been the hardest... My acne has never got this bad before and as time goes by it's making me feel more insecure and upset. I have recently not been going out as much as I used to by declining party invitations or just hanging out with some friends. I'm dreading going to one of my close friend's house tomorrow for a sleepover , as I'm going to probably going to take my makeup off. I had an emotional break down at my school a few weeks ago as we are not aloud to wear makeup in my school and I got caught out so I was asked to take it off. That really upset me. I once followed the teachers rules and was covering my hand over my face the whole day and barley looking other people in the eye. I don't know what to do anymore ... Thing like sleepovers and theme parks should be something to look forward too, not to dread... Going to an all girls school like a mess should be fine , it's not! I give up ... My main priority is my skin ... All I think about is my skin and cry myself to sleep. Are there any treatments that are mild and good for acne ? Please get in touch with me as soon as you can if there's any suggestions...

hi sorry you're going through this. I had acne at an early age too. Chances are you will outgrow it so until then try and take care if your skin. I recommend washing twice a day with warm water and a wash cloth. You can try acne treatments like salicylic acid or benzoil peroxide but don't go crazy with products, I suggest using just one.
Try not to eat too much sugar and ask your parents if you can try cutting out dairy to see if it helps. Milk makes my skin break out .
Maybe your mom could talk to your teachers...instead of foundation maybe try using concealer for spots and a light powder. Your teacher shouldn't have made you take it off if you explained why you were wearing it. I went to Catholic school and we always had to take off our nail polish. Hope this goes away for you soon!
