Hi there
I'm 41, female and have bipolar 1 and take lithium. As lithium reacts badly with accutane I can't take accutane.
i currently use obagi salycilic acid cleanser and toner and 5% BP lotion. I also take antibiotics - erythromycin.
however I am still breaking out.
should Iust giveup the fight and accept that nothing will work because one of the side effects of lithium is acne? Has anyone had luck in curing acne caused by lithium?
thank you in advance

The Regimen sounds like a great option for you! It's the next best thing to Accutane with few adverse side effects. Like Accutane, 2.5% BP will clear you up in a few months and help prevent new breakouts as long as you use as directed and keep up with the treatments.
Best of luck!!

Hi Delovely
i am currently using 5% BP from Obagi, but it hasn't helped and I've been using it for 4 years. Will the 2.5% be better for me?
Wow, 4 years is a long time...sorry your current topicals aren't working. Stronger BP formulas are not better at killing acne bacteria than a 2.5% formula. 2.5% is way gentler on your skin, reducing irritation, and still effectively kills p.acnes on contact. Dan's gel formula glides on easily too...being gentle with your skin when applying the products is important to avoid irritation breakouts. So many creams are too thick and don't spread well.
The Regimen works well alone, or paired with an oral antibiotic. How long have you been taking erythromycin?
8 weeks on erythromicin so far...

So probably only another 4 weeks to go, huh? Is the antibiotic working?? Antibiotics can clear acne well, but often don't prevent future breakouts, so topicals are needed for maintenance afterwards. The Regimen accomplishes both (clearing and future breakout prevention)!

thank you for your help. One last question - if and when I get clear on the regimen, how long do I still need to use it to remain clear? Many thanks.
Unlike Accutane, which has a clear start and end, the Regimen user will enjoy clear skin as long as they keep using it consistently. Oral antibiotics can be deceiving because they seem to work the same as Accutane (rapid clearing, etc.) but the results are seldom permanent.
The Regimen is not a cure for acne, but it is a way to enjoy clear skin in the meantime by surpressing acne symptoms, until acne naturally resolves.
Question: since lithium seems like the culprit in your case, is there another med you could take instead that would work just as well?? But if it's what works and what you need, I completely get it.

yes lithium works for me so I shouldn't really alter that. I will look forward to the regimen arriving and thank you for your very kind help
