What Lengths Have You Gone to Treat Your Acne?

Acne makes us desperate, but from this desperation there often comes a real sense of determination to achieve clear skin.

So, what dramatic steps have you taken in that chase for the feeling of clear skin and confidence? Have you travelled huge distances to see a particular dermatologist? Have you tried expensive procedures such as laser therapy and microdermabrasion etc? Or have you ever ended up ordering medication from dodgy online pharmacies?

Personally, the furthest I've gone in terms of monetary value and effort was to go and see a private dermatologist. The NHS waiting lists were about 16 weeks at the time and I couldn't bear to wait that long to see a derm, so I stumped up the cash to be seen in 2 weeks instead.

How about you guys?

Over the course of having acne, I've spend tens of thousands of dollars on treatments, makeup, pills, vitamins therapy etc. I've done accutane 2x, lasers, peels, antibiotics, birth control, all of the topical treatments (both OTC and RX). I've done accupuncture for years, which had me taking chinese herbs (it works but cost $100 a month) but is not sustainable. I've followed the advice of a naturopath which had me doing iridiology, hair chemical imbalance tests, saliva tests, blood tests, changing my diet to paleo...that was a big waste of money.

The acne goes away briefly and then always comes back. Here I am at age 38 and the acne has come back again. I'm contemplating accutane again.

Just used products. No derm or anything and I'm fine.

Unfortunately for people with actual severe and persistant acne, seeing a derm is a must. Not everyone is 'fine' from using products, and that makes you incredibly lucky...

I've spent hours and hours online, watched every acne video there is on youtube, been on accutane (which in itself is quite extreme)

two months ago I even bought accutane online to self-medicate - but my mum found them and threw them in the toilet before I took one , which is a blessing in disguise. The things I wouldn't do to have clear skin and be 'fine' lol..

I've had mild but persistent acne. And it's left some scars and I obviously need to see a derm. But can't afford one so nothing I can do but let them fade .

Most dramatic lengths for me was experimenting with ill thought out home remedies when I was a teenager.

Since then, years of antibiotics and creams and the occasional light treatment.

Experimenting with all possible home remedies and topical OTC medications mentioned in this site.
And this site mentions some crazy treatment too.One of them is URINE therapy, yes urine!!And I did try it for a couple of days when I was breaking out like crazy with cysts(at this time-last year). The idea was gross and I don't know whether it worked since I would keep it on for about an hour before bed,and that too for only two days.

Ok, embarrassing, those horrible clogged pores and closed comedones, I went at them with a foot scrubber/pumice stone to try scrape the buggers out. I do not recommend obviously. It left me very scabby. As you can probably imagine I was very upset and desperate to resort to that.

Got the winner guys lol jk. Seriously though, Went on vacation to Pakistan, and went to a spiritual healer who gave me bottles and bottles of these ground up vitamins and herbs that were apparently "Blessed" or something.... and were supposed to clear your skin. They weren't licensed, didn't have any kind of ingredients list on it or anything...lmfao. yeah they didn't work but they didn't kill me either so...win?? lol That was truly a dark desperate time for me.

Other than that, I've gone through spironolactone, Doxycycline, Tretinoin, Microdermabrasion, Mederma (for scars), ACV, a plethora of Lush products, and a whole lot of OTC medications. The first 3 actually worked ! :)
