Hey guys!

Was curious if any ladies who have struggled with hormonal acne can give me some advice? I am a 20 year old female and have realized my acne is mostly hormonal. During my period and a little bit before and after acne seems controlable but when I'm ovulating my skin is the worst for like a week to two weeks. I'm going to the derm tomorrow to talk about some options. I've never been on birth control before and I don't want to but I think that's one of my only options. I've also heard spironolactone works great (not sure if I spelled that right). If you guys could let me know what works or doesn't work for you that would be great! Thanks guys.

I was on Yasmin for a year and a half. It did not completely cleared me up as i was still getting cystic zits around my mouth, especially on my chin during that time of the month. I stopped it. So now i am on my 8 month taking Spironolactone and it is a life saver. Wish i had known this drug way back when i was your age. Wouldn't have missed out a half of my life lol. I am now 28 years old.

By the way, i've also tried accutane twice. But my acne always comes backafew months off it.

I did spiro too...it works while u take it but u gotta get labs done to check potassium level and it gave me horrible headaches for some reason even tho I drank tons of water...I would rate the whole experience an 8

I would try and stay away from birth control and spirnolactone -- the two together did clear me up for some time, but at some point you won't be able to take them forever, whether its because you want to start having kids, or you become sensitive to the negative side effects of either medication or both. It took my 6 months to slowly, and I mean SLOWLY come off of spiro because of the water retention side effect. Some people, myself included, quit spiro cold turkey and I gained 10 lbs over night in water weight... I kid you not! It took me 6 months to get of it, slowly cutting the pills into halves, quarters, etc. It was terrible. My legsand stomach would swell every time I cut the pills down. Also, your acne will most likely return once you quit either medication. At this age, in your 20's I would suggest eating extremely well, drinking plenty of water, and try chaste tree berry to regulate your hormones. I take the brand GAIA at 1000 mg p/day. Is is a miracle herb? No. But it has worked wonders for many, many people! But, if your willing to take the risks, I would suggest Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for Birth Control and 100mg of spirnolactone if you want to be 99% clear for awhile... Remember it'll take about 3-4 months for it all to kick in.Just my two cents.

Acne has been apart of my life for 10+ years, on/off. Right now I am dealing with cystic acne post birth control and spirnolactone, but we are trying for a baby -- so I obviously can't be on either. I think one of things that has helped me the most is eating extremely clean - mostly vegan; with the exception of wild fish. Chaste Tree Berry can definitely help with hormone regulation, however it takes about 3-6 months to build up in your system. I've tried pretty much everything under the sun to help clear skin; all the natural remedies and old wives tales, every antibiotic except accutane (which I won't do)... cortisone shots, etc. I actually was prescribed liquid iodine by my Naturopathic Doctor on Monday and I get it in the mail today. I guess it can work really well on cystic lesions (but not to be applied to the whole face). Liquid iodine is the stuff surgeons use before going into surgery to kill bacteria on their hands and arms. I purchased this brand at 2.5% http://www.amazon.com/J-CROWS%C2%AE-Lugols-Iodine-Solution-Twin/dp/B00E3B49R2 I hope it helps. I just started an antibiotic called Cephalexin yesterday, so I hope it starts to kick in really soon. I'll be vacationing next month and the last thing I want to deal with on my relaxing getaway is cystic acne. I would also recommend taking a liver support supplement (you can see all the supplements I take in my signature). There's been a lot of research done that poor liver function can attribute to acne in general. A liver supplement will only do you good; no side effects. <3
