Taking A Decision

Long story short, I am 25yo, had severe acne since around 19yo, took Doxycycline, Mynocycline, Brevoxyl, Skinoren, Zynerit, Mask Plus Gel and many other substances prepared in laboratory/pharmacies. I've also had a few peeling sessions. Everything worked wonders while I was on antibiotics, but the acne would always come back, even worse, after finishing the course.

I took Azitrox from January until April, and used Skinoren for about 6 months. My skin was clear and it continues to be the same, but I was on a very strict diet in the last 7 months.

I haven't had sugar, dairy, chips, fast-food, oceanic fish, high glycemic index food, corn, eggs, bananas, grapes, nuts, almonds, soda, sweets, pasta, pizza potatoes etc. None, zero. The worst breakout I had was about 3 weeks ago, it wasn't much, about 7-8 cysts that went away in maximum 15 days. I'm pretty sure it was from drinking over 1L/day of orange juice (Pfanner, no added sugar). Now it comes the tough part. My dermatologist said I have to keep this diet for my whole life. I can't do this. I've spoken to two other dermatologists and they've said I have two options: stick on some topical treatment while I eat a normal diet, keep the treatment for around 4 months and then wait another 6 months to see if I can fix my scars (if I don't have any breakouts). Or, start Roaccutane for 8 months, wait 6 months afterwards and fix my scars.

Don't really know what to do. I really want to be done once for all with my acne and Roaccutane seems the best bet to do that. I'm tempted to start eating a normal diet again and see what happens for at least a month. If things go bad, I think the only solution would be going on Roaccutane. I could live with a balanced diet, eating the stuff I haven't ate in low amounts, here and there, but completely cutting them out sucks, that's a really awful diet.

What do you think?

With every route you take in clearing your acne, there are times when you need to sacrifice things. Like, not eating a normal diet or taking antibiotics with side effects. You have to decide what it is you are willing to do and what to give up and make sure it works around your lifestyle so it won't feel like a total annoyance.

My acne is caused by hormones and maybe perhaps drastic changes in my diet and medication would help, I chose not to go there because I can't live day to day always worrying about what to eat. So instead I chose a topical regimen that although takes time and effort, it works around my lifestyle and has kept me clear for almost 3 years now.

So ultimately it really is what works around your lifestyle and what kind of effort you want or don't want to put into.

Small changes that you normally overlook may play a significant role in your acne problem. I was at the same point you were and looked up what else I could do. Pillow cases house millions of dead skin cells and other things that can lead to clogged pores. Do you change them every two weeks?

Honestly no offense but shut the fuck up already about pillowcases. Like pillowcases is the last reason people get Acne honestly. It has nothing to do with pillow cases and has almost everything to do with genetcis and DIET. Thats the end of it. If you wash ur face once a day thats enough to get rid of a shit ton of dead skin cells so the theory that its dirt and deadskin cells is the last reason why ppl would get severe Acne.

Thanks for your answers and yeah, I change my pillow cases every week. Man, this decision sucks big time, I read a few horror stories about permanent side effects, but I read a lot of happy stories as well.

Nobody else? Do you think it is possible, after I kept that strict diet for a long time, when I start eating everything, my acne could come back not immediatly, but months afterwards?

I think if you can control acne without putting accutane in your system, it's worth a shot. Junk food is bad for you anyway so it shouldn't be the norm for you but i definitely understand having to restrict yourself too, especially when being social. Keep up with your skin care regimen and try indulging ONCE IN A WHILE and see what happens. That at least will fall within the 90% 10% rule where you eat healthy most of the time and indulge once in a while.

I wish diet had worked for me, even a tiny bit.

yes, safest bet right now is to try and eat everything in moderate amounts, exercise, drink plenty of water and see what happens. I'll give it a month and if it's not working, I'll just stop wasting time and taking the risk with Roaccutane. Thx for the answer.

Try drinking fresh raw Beetroot, Carrot and Lemon juice(juiced using masticating juicer) daily for about 3 weeks and see how you go. That's what has been keeping my skin clear of cystic acne. I no longer need to take any antibiotics anymore or use acne creams. I've also heard good stories about Roaccutane, but if you're prone to becoming depressed or have a history of mental illness, don't even touch the drug. Trust me, I was only on it for 5 days but it messed up my mental health and I'm on antidepressants now which I never thought I would have to go on.

Few other things you could add to your juice are ginger, spinach, celery, wheatgrass etc.
