I've tried many things to try and get rid of my acne. I've tried many face washes, creams, face masks, etc. My doctor asked if I was using any products for my acne (Doctor not dermatologist). I told him I was using face washes, benzoyl peroxide, and moisturizers. He went on and told me not to use any of that stuff other then the benzoyl peroxide. Do you think I should cut out the face washes and moisturizers. I really need some help with clearing up my acne, does anyone know what I could do to help it atleast calm down like dieting, supplements, natural remedies, creams, etc.
please help acne has ruined my confidence and my self esteem.
Well first off let me tell you I have seen significantly worse acne. I would say you are probably just more upset with the redness. Anyway it seems you have an oily skin type. If that is true I would suggest using a sacylic acid wash like Neutrogena as a face wash, morning and night, and then after about ten minutes applying bp to trouble areas. Make sure you use the wash for a minimum of one minute, prepping with warm water and finishing with cold. Many people make the mistake of only letting it sit for a few seconds. I have oily skin and have never used moisturizers, as quite honestly I am afraid of them. Anyway I find it is incredibly helpful mentally to have a regime that you strictly follow. Set times. For instance I use my face wash 10pm everyday. This let's me feel better knowing I have a plan.
I know how you feel. Looking at your pictures, my acne was similar. I'm a lot older than you are; I'm 33 this year. I started getting acne when I was 13 and I've struggled with it since, up until late 2013. I've had my fair share of acne-battling experiences. Tried a whole range of off-the-counter products, turning to a dermatologist when I ran out of ideas, and so on. I did not undergo accutane treatment though, I must say. I also did not make any significant changes to my diet, other than cutting down on sugar, salt and fried foods, in which case I was looking out for my waistline, rather than my skin! I still take dairy products and chocolate regularly (like daily) because I can't live without them.
What finally worked for me was switching to skincare products that uses simple, often-organic ingredients. I feel that such products, while not specifically targeting acne, calm the skin down and improve its ability to heal itself. I've tried products from Garden of Wisdom, Cosmedix, Devita, Sevani, with varying degrees of success. All of them have online websites. These skincare lines may be a good place to start as they are not too expensive. I'm currently using products from Yuli, which for me, went a long way in healing my skin almost completely. It was not until switching to Yuli that I saw significant improvement in my condition. In the past I would get new acne every few days. Now however, I would get 1 pimple every 2-3 weeks, and it's small and heals within a couple of days. The problem with Yuli is that it's really expensive. So, my advice is to do your research - read up on reviews and select a skincare line that would suit you.
If you would like to try a home remedy, I'll suggest a honey+lemon mask. I mix a teaspoon of manuka honey and several drops of juice from a fresh lemon. Then I apply it to my face and neck, wait for 20-30 minutes, and wash it off. I find that the antiseptic and antibacterial properties of the honey and lemon help in fighting acne, as well as healing smaller pimples. On this note however, I must give fair warning that if you have very sensitive skin, you may want to do a patch test first, or be more careful in adjusting the amount of honey or lemon that you use.
Finally, I wanna wish you good luck. As a fellow acne-sufferer, you have my sympathies and I honestly hope that your struggle with acne ends a lot more quickly than mine!
If it makes you feel better, your acne doesnt seem severe. It seems like moderate acne. And keep using the benzoyl peroxide. I dont know why your doctor would tell you to cut off the moisturizer since extremely dry skin isn't healthy skin. If anything buy sunscreen that also moisturizes while you use the BP so you lessen the risk of your red spots turning to dark spots. Also if you want use tepezcohuite pomade which is good to help get rid of acne and also to help speed up skin repairment. Good luck!
My Dr said the same thing about benzoyl peroxide so I cut everything else out and just used that but I hated it, it made my skin really dry and didn't actually clear my spots. So now my routine is get all the dirt / make up off with micellar water (reccomend this even for men who don't wear make up), wash my face and neck with La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel twice wipe my face dry with a cotton pad (I avoid towels on my face). Then I put the benzoyl peroxide on and sleep in it every other night. The nights I don't sleep in it I leave it on until I'm just about to go to bed take it off by washing my face with water and drying it with a cotton pad and I apply sudocrem all over my face before I sleep (such a pain to sleep in). In addition to this I am also taking antihistamine once a day - you can buy this over the counter it's usually in hayfever packaging, this has reduced the little bumps I had. I woke up this morning and actually thought hey my skin looks a bit better!
