So I had a closed comedone on my chin for about a month. It was not very big but noticeable, white or maybe flesh-colored. I didn't touch or squeeze it at all. Today I woke up and the closed comedone was waay smaller but instead a large bump appeared around it. It's a bit red (but not very inflamed), swollen and sore when you touch it (I mean, it hurts when i gently push it with my finger and also it hurts a little bit when I make a sharp movement with my mouth). Does it mean that the closed comedone kind of broke deeper into my skin and became inflamed? What should I do to make it go away? I'm going on holidays tomorrow and this thing really makes me anxious. I'm thinking about cancelling my plans. Please, help me.

I know the pic is lame, my camera sucks, it looks way worse in reality.

Put some aloe vera gel on it and don't stress out about it. It's a shame to cancel your holidays because of this, seriously.
Try getting into a skin clinic or call your dermatologist and ask to get in for a cortisone shot, your blemish looks like a cystic pimple, which can take days or weeks to heal. By getting a cortisone shot, the blemish will diminish by half in 24 hours and be completely flattened in 48. It's worth the cost, $50-75 p/shot. Hopefully you can get in! I realize it's Sunday so not every doctors office is open... but some Urgent Cares can preform cortisone shots as well. Just call and ask.
If this not possible, ice the blemish 2-3x p/day, 20 min. each time and use neosporin or polysporin and place it on the blemish and cover with a bandaid for as long as possible. Continue doing this and it should bring down the inflammation. Also, pop a couple advil to help with the inflammation internally.

Thank you very much. Right now the bump is ten times more inflamed and it hurts very much. i can't get a cortisone shot in the next two weeks but i can put some hydrocortisone ointment on it (it's not very strong, less than 0,5%, mixed with oxytetracycline), will it help? and is it safe to use hydrocortisone for a short period of time on one spot on the face?
It's a first cyst in my lifw. I'm really stressed out because my acne is generally very mild. especially now, when i'm on low dose accutane and my skin is flawless apart from this huge cyst.
Also, does anyone know if accutane helps with existing cysts? Or can it possibly cause them?
Don't stress too much about it -- will only make it worse! Easier said then done, I know...
Is your derm's office 2 weeks booked out? I would still schedule something because these types of cysts can literally last that long, if not longer... and if it does go away you can just cancel the apt... better to have one on the books then not!
You can use hydrocortisone cream on it; it should help the inflammation. Just dont use it every single day for "weeks on end"... you can develop steriod-induced rosacea if you use hydrocortisone cream for a long period of time (just a warning).
I use hydrocortison cream on my hypermigmentation and it helps... I use the Benadryl kind which is 1%.
Are you currently on accutane? If not, I doubt a derm would prescribe it for just one cyst... generally you need to have moderate to severe acne to be eligible for accutane.
Don't forget to ice the cyst as well, that will help with the inflammation as well. Also start eating an anti-inflammatory diet; leafy green vegetables, fish oil (salmon, halibut, cod), no-salt added miso, matcha green tea, gluten-free, etc. (at least for the mean time!)

Hi, you should call other dermatologists. Even if they don't take your insurance, they usually don't charge a huge amount for the injection. Unfortunately, nothing topical will really make it go away, icing may temporarily reduce the inflammation though. Hydrocortisone gel probably won't help either, but it may reduce redness. Try not to stress! It's not worth canceling a holiday over. And who knows? A little R & R might help.

i'm using ice and hydrocortisone right now. i also take ibuprofen.
i'm on accutane now, although a micro dose - 5 mg a day. can it possibly help with the cyst?
also, if it kind of came to a head, is it ok to pop it? i know you shouldn't pop deep, painful things, but how else can it come down? and how long does it take?
If it is pretty painful I would assume it's a cyst... I have had many in the past when my hormones were out of whack and I was eating poor diet that included dairy and lots of meat. I am surprised you got a cyst (if that is what it ends up being) while on accutane... Accutane is suppose to treat this type of acne. Although many folks have had success when altering their diet and/or regulating their hormones. I would NOT pop it, as much as you want... I have a few bad scars because of this. If your willing to take the risk of an indention scare, then by all means, go for it... but i wouldn't. Your body is a beautiful thing and has a way of fighting off infections (which is what a pimple is), let it run its course. I had a blind pimple under my nose over the weekend (I did not pop it) and I used my Clear Skin Probiotic masque and Stone Crop Toner and Tylenol and its gone today!

thank you so much. I definetely won't pop it for the next ten days because I'm away from home and I can't walk around with a bloody swollen wound. is it possible that something like this would calm down after 12 days in total (counting from the day it has appeared)? if it doesn't go away or become less visible, I'll try to pop it. i'm not afraid of scarring - I find scars (ecen permanent) ten times less gross than a huge, red, raised pimple. and I don't usually scar - I only get red marks that fade in time. I'm afraid that popping is the only way of removing a closed comedone responsible for the inflammation
If you want to pop it, I was research the best ways to pop a cyst... or you can get it extracted by a professional. Be very careful... when you pop a zit like that it can break down the walls around the inside of the pimple and spread the infection deeper into your skin... you could then get another cyst a few days/week later right next to where the old one was. It could go down after 10 days. Keep up with eating healthy, drinking water, and not touching it, except to put medicine on it. Let me know how it goes! Have a great rest of your holiday...!

Thank you! It's not painful anymore, even if I touch it - that's the good news. Unfortunately it's still as big, red and hard as before. I think that the head is getting biger and more raised but I'm not sure. It's not a whitehead - more like raised blackhead with a black dot at the top. It' difficult to cover it with make up, especially for me, since I usually do not use make up at all and I barely have any products. I'm eating healthily and taking accutane (even though I'm not sure if it does anything for existing pimples). And I'm still not sure if that is really a cyst. Does ibuprofen (advil) do anything for the redness or only the pain? And can topical Clindamycin help anyhow? I have it with me but I don't want to use it if it may make this thing worse.
I would definitely start using the topical clindamycin... at least I would... any kind of antibiotic cream would help. If it has a black dot at the top that could be a spider bite, unless you are certain it's a pimple of some kind. I once got a spider bite on my neck and it had a black dot (not a blackhead) in the center of it.
Ibuprofen will not help the redness, but will help the swelling. If you are able to get your hands on some Visine (the liquid drops for red eyes) you can actually use that on a zit and it will help with the redness. Models use that all the time!

I'm certain it's a pimple. We do not have biting spiders where I live and also as I said, the pimple has been there in a form of a blackhead-closed comedone for about a month before it became inflamed. It doesn't change at all and I'm really getting sick of it.
Sounds like you are touching it. Stop stop stop touching it. The internal spread happens when we touch...trust me, I know the hard way. Use Mario Badescu Buffering Lotion for cystic acne at night, dont touch it, avoid the mirror, and it will be gone without a scar
Hi! Thanks for your advice. Unfortunately, we dont have mario badescu lotion in Poland. What are the inhredients? Maybe I'll find something similiar. Also, I don't really care if it is gone with or wihout a scar. I just want it to be gone as quick as possible. Scars don't bother me at all. I mean, I don't find them ugly or anything.
