I'm 18 and female, and have suffered with acne for almost 5 years. I've been on the following treatments with the following results, listed from oldest to newest:Benzoyl peroxide/salycylic acid/tretinion regimen- This regimen dried my skin out (and I don't have sensitive skin!) and did not help my acne muchabove regimen plus Doxycycline- the antibiotic that did nothing from my acne, same results as beforeAmoxicillin twice a day/benzoyl peroxide/tretinion- THIS WAS THE CURE TO MY ACNE. Unfortunately, i've been on the antiobiotic amoxicillin for far too long than recommended (1+ year) and my dermatologist will no longer allow me to continue this. He has given me two options- birth control or accutane. I don't want to go on a hormonal treatment and accutane has the potential of severe side effects that I don't want to deal with. Plus, my acne isn't on the level where taking accutane is a responsible choice. I would describe my acne as moderately severe. I get lots of postules and some cysts, mostly on my cheeks and nose, then forehead, and none on my jawline or chin. I also have scalp acne, which can only be battled with through internal acne treatments.Long story short, I have recently stopped going to my dermatologist so I can do my own research and battle acne on my own. Besides, he has only allowed me with two options, neither of which I am interested in. After doing some research on my own, I have compiled a list of vitamins that I will buy to fight acne internally. This includes Vit. A, C, D3, E, Zinc, Milk Thistle, B3, Omega 3, B5, garlic pills, and organic ACV. I am also looking into applying Betadine PI topically with a light cetaphil cleanser daily.I have some questions and am hoping you guys can give me some input:1) Which of the vitamins that I have listed do you highly suggest? And how do you determine the appropriate dosage?2) Should I continue Benzoyl peroxide and tretinoin along with the treatment I have suggested above? They both help with drying out pimples and making my skin even.
well i am not too familiar with these vitamins but you could check out examine.com which has lots of information on supplements. 2) i have been using both and have worked for me. If they are helping you with your acne why stop using them. I would keep on using them. I too am almost a year into taking monocycline (similar to Doxycycline) and i will have to wait and see what other options my derm. gives me. Keep us posted as i would like to see the results you get.

i myself just take x2 tablets of zinc & x1 of vitamin c, it works quite well for me. what ever vitamins you try will normally take 1-2 weeks to start to work.
i find Benzoyl peroxide very harsh, it is good at killing an infected spot but i find its best in very small amounts (a small amount on a Q-tip applied to the spot) more than that and it can cause nasty redness .
you might want to try taking it back to basic's - no creams, washing your face x2 times a day only using a sensitive soap with no
fragrance / or just water & no scratching or touching your spots. your be surprised as sometimes less is more.
there is tones of other things you can try (dont drink milk, avoid certain foods, drinking more water etc) but you need to find out what works for you.
let us know how you get on.
Hello everybody,
I have been on a specific regimen for less than two weeks now and I wanted to provide an update.
As suggested above, I have tried the less is more method and I'm really liking it. I use tretinoin sporadically and on a limited basis as needed to help with scarring. Mainly, i wash my face in the morning with water only and a very light nuetrogena cleanser that doubles as makeup remover at night. I've been taking two garlic pills, vit d3 and one fish oil every day. My most miraculous change is that I no longer get cysts, not a single one. I still have quite a lot of red inflamed pustules but they're small and are quite a relief from cystic acne I used to get between amoxicillin refills. I picked up some zinc today and am hoping to add that to my regimen. I will also monitor my acne to make sure cysts don't return around my period.
