Hi everyone,
First post on this site.
I have always had acne prone skin since 15-16 years old. I thought it would clear up by 20, but I'm 25 now and still the same story. It has gotten only slightly better, but still unbearable. I have a really healthy lifestyle. I eat very healthy foods like whole grains, lentils, fruits, drink lots of water etc. I rarely eat junk food like a pizza maybe once in 2 weeks and that's about it. I like to work out and do cardio which causes me to sweat a lot since I have pretty high metabolism. Even doing bicep curls can make me sweat. I sleep well and I have no stress at the moment. Basically living an ideal life... and what do I get in return? A fistful of acne.
Anyways I have noticed that my acne tends to clear out once I stop working out. And my acne is directly proportional to how much I sweat in a workout. Basically doing more cardio and sweating = more acne on my back and face. If I stop working out for a month, I will get very few new acne and the previous ones slowly start to die out, but if I stop working out, I get fat and puffy so it's a trade-off.
What I tried for my acne is taking a shower right after I workout basically the sooner I take a shower after workout, the less new acne will form. However, it's not always possible to do it right away. I also started gently wiping the sweat off my face with tissue papers at the gym which also limits the new breakouts. However, none of these things actually completely eliminate acne and all it takes is one time for me to delay the shower (ex: >30 min after 1 hour workout) and a major breakout can occur. I will get about 5-7 new acne on my face (mostly forehead because I sweat more there) and about 10-15 new acne on my entire back. And it will take about 3-4 weeks for them to die out if I'm doing everything right.
It's made me hopeless right now.
My routine:
Dove sensitive skin soap bar to wash body and face twice daily and rarely 3 times.
After washing, I use avocado oil mixed with tea tree oil as moisturizer for face and back.
Avocado oil mixed with tea tree oil seemed to work for the first month, but now it doesn't seem to help. It seemed to have cleared my skin really well at first, but now it doesn't seem to work.
Need advice for what I can do. I tried cetaphil, but that didn't do anything. I used to use clindoxyl gel as prescribed by my doctor which worked somewhat, but it's too expensive to use now.
If you have made it this far, Thank you and please give me some advice on how to deal with this bane.
hey bro, I worked out when I was 16 for various reasons. I was hoping it would also improve my acne, along with drinking lots of water, but it really didn't. Long story short, I eventually realized I had leaky gut syndrom, which was probably caused by a shitty diet. This year I've cleared my acne through diet. Sadly, it's not as simple as eating healthy.
You have to get nutrients, and avoid things that are harming your body. Too many grains will tear down my intestinal walls and leave me prone to breakouts. On top of that, I had my own food sensitivities, which meant random foods could trigger cystic outbreaks. Also, anything that constipates me too badly can lead to cysts.
And this is all if something related to your food digestion is causing your acne. You gotta figure out what's wrong. You're not supposed to have acne, which means you're not supposed to treat it. You're should find out what's causing it and cure it. Hope this saves you a lot of time.

Well I don't think it could be the food that's causing the acne. If I stop working out or doing cardio and don't sweat then I will usually start to clear up. I have been eating the same food since I was a child and never had acne as a child so I don't think that after 15 years old I must have become insensitive to the same foods I have been eating my whole life which is good food to begin with. I haven't had any case where if I eat a certain food I break out. However, I do get diarrhea almost every other day. I don't know what that is. Never experienced constipation. I think the diarrhea might be because of how much water I drink so when i drink less water I don't get diarrhea. I just can't figure out what could be causing the acne other than the sweat.
Do you use whey protein for your workouts? Just throwing it out there, that stuff makes me break out so bad! Could be a combination of things, I wouldn't rule out diet completely because it often plays a bigger factor than people realize. My friend found out he has a shellfish allergy and he had been taking vitamins containing a small amount of shellfish for years, and after stopping his skin has cleared some. Try and cut dairy if you haven't already and see if that helps? That is, if you're a dairy drinker.
So acne is almost completely genetic. There is actually no study that has ever been done linking acne to any type of food consumption. Many people think their diet is the cause and while some foods that you are allergic to can cause acne like symptoms, the disease known as acne vulgaris is not caused by particular foods. This has been extremely well researched for decades (I had to write several boring ass papers on this topic).
Sadly, it's all related to your hormones. That's why kids never get acne/pimples. They simply do not have the hormone levels to produce acne. What happens in these trials which relate food to acne is the ever so common placebo effect. Someone changes their diet and their acne clears up a bit (sometimes) and they think they have figured out. What often happens is your hormone levels are simply shifting as they will continue to do throughout your entire life. Believe it or not acne does just often vanish, this is actually the case for many people once puberty has ended and their hormones normalize. For others this can take 20-50 years though (sometimes they never do at all). It really sucks but our genetic makeup determines so much of who we are (Height, face shape, hair, etc).
To the original poster, working out is very unlikely causing you to break out. In fact it should help with breakouts as it forces your pores open and pushes junk out. You just got the shit end of the stick for skin when it comes to genes like many of us did. Good news is there are plenty of scientifically proven treatments for you and you can definitely get clear. From the description of your acne I would recommend trying the regimen for a few months. If you still do not see enough improvement, you should see a good board certified dermatologist for further treatment. Also, stop using bar soap and oils on your face. These are not meant for people with acne prone skin and may be making your acne worse. Especially bar soap as it is very unsanitary. Many people don't know this but most bar soap is made from animal fat and it collects and retains a ton of bacteria.

I've actually cleared my cystic acne through diet. My previous diet I grew up on was crappy, so it broke down my digestion system over the years, thus causing my body to be unable to combat the toxins which lead to acne.
As for all the studies claiming food doesn't correlate with acne, I don't trust them or the industry. There's too many professionals giving out false information, and the pharmaceutical companies make bank. It's the same reason why the mainstream media reported that the lack of vaccinations is what caused the outbreaks of measles and mumps.

But... It's the different healthier food consumption that changes your hormones. Bad food can throw your hormones off which in turn leads to bad skin. How can you say that diet has no affect on acne. That's ridiculous, I know for a fact that when consuming loads of veggies, water, eggs every day for a while made my skin more clear than it had been in years. Then when I started eating poorly again- it all goes downhill. Downing pizza's, dairy, soda, other junk food... of course that's going to cause some people to break out. Or not even necessarily bad food, some people are just sensitive to certain foods. I'm not saying everyone is affected the same way, but many definitely are. I don't think it's correct to say "acne is completely this" or "acne is completely that" because it's so varied from person to person.
I've been eating healthy for the last 2 weeks and I've noticed a difference in my skin. Fewer pimples popping up and the older ones going away and the red marks are starting to fade nicely.
Besides, whether healthier foods helps acne or not - Healthier is providing your body with the nutrition it needs. Junk food doesn't.
Always good to go healthy.
We may not all agree to the root cause of acne as that is individual but it's safe to say that acne can be a multifaceted issue. Leaky gut may be the issue for one person, food allergies can be the issue for another, etc etc. Just because something works for one person, doesn't mean that it will work for another. Exercise is important so still do it. Having a healthier immune system can help acne heal faster so a balanced diet is in your best interest. You can try cutting out dairy and gluten to see if it works for you but recognize it may or may not be your cure.
