Hi,
Sorry to ask another question, would be really grateful for any replies as really struggling at the moment..
As I have been using Panoxyl 10 (Benzoyl Peroxide) for 15-20 years and still getting whitehead/blackheads and VERy dry but VERY,VERY oily skin, it got me thinking...could using Benzoyl Peroxide for so long be the reason for my very oily, acne prone skin?? Is it a vicious circle?? As Benzoyl Peroxide is very drying, the skin will naturally fight against it by over working and putting oil (moisture) back into the effected area....If the reason for my acne is my very oily skin, could it help by taking away the cause of my pores producing too much oil? i.e stop using Benzoyl Peroxide to allow my skin to return to normal??? I really don't have an answer and it would be great to know what you all think...many thanks
My dear friend, I know that benzoyl peroxide causes dryness in skin. But you say that your skin becomes oily. I don't think so that it akes your skin oily, there may be another reason associated with your oily skin. This chemical can also cause redness of your skin, you know that. So, it would be much better if you try to find out the exact another reason for your oily skin.
Many thanks for your comments...appreciate the replies.....I'm 40years old now and been taking Panoxyl since I was late teens.....almost 20years which is a long time to be using the same product.....I'm just not sure I'm brave enough to stop using Panoxyl completely even tho the aquagel range does not seem to work as well as the acnegel range I used for 15years(before it was discontinued)....I just keep thinking...maybe the cause of my acne in my late teens might now be different as skin changes as you get older, but as long as I keep taking Benzoyl Peroxide I will keep having the oily skin and my acne prone skin will not change....very confused and don't know which direction to take........thank you again for your time to reply......
Kind regards
YES, it does. Couple of years ago I had some pimples on my chest and I put BP on my chest and my chest started to get oily and I never ever before had any oil on my chest, ever. I don't use BP anymore and my chest is normal again, no oil. It made my face oily too and made my pores really LARGE, thank god I don't have to use BP nevr again!
I actually believe that if you always use BP, you might never get rid of acne. This is why I stopped using BP and behold, I'm 99% acne free now and I just wash my face twice a day with a gentle cleanser, nothing else. Your skin never even gets the chance to learn to fight acne bacteria and work normally when you always slap lots and lots of BP on your face and after that ridiculous amounts of moisturizer just to keep it somewhat normal, madness I say.
Thanks for your comments AthleteMan.....I'm starting to think there might be some truth to that mate....BP does work great on spots and over the past 15 years has indeed worked very well but I've not had one day in all that time when my face wasn't VERY oily.....I often find that within 30minutes of using Panoxyl my face is oily but it does work to dry up the acne. I find if I rub alittle on a spot during the day on top of my normal morning and evening wash etc....that the spot is gone within 48hours....maybe the trick is to just put it on the spots and not cover the complete area...i.e skin/nose/forehead...now in my 40's I really would love to break the circle, somehow.....
Tried.....erythromycin, Isotretinoin (roaccutane) and a few other antibiotic treatments over the years...Most of the antibiotic treatments work for a time but the body builds up a resistance to it and it stops working.....I tried antibiotics a few times and my skin ended up getting worse which is why I used roaccutane for a 6month course about 7 years ago....after I finished treatment my skin was great for a few years but found I still had to use Panoxyl as a maintenance....over the last 20years I've pretty much tried everything......problems is after all that time it difficult to know if the cause of the issue is the amount of products you are using and if the reason why you started treatment has changed.....the difficult thing is...there isn't one rule for everyone...we are all different and what works for one person doesn't always work for someone else....that's what makes acne so difficult to treat and so depressing to live with......
I've had pretty decent success with benzyl peroxide, but yes it does seem to also make my skin oily, just without the acne. I combat it by taking a vitamin A supplement, which helps a lot. Isotretinoin is just a modified version of vitamin A, which I did try years ago with several negative side efdects. A simple supplement works just as well without any of the problems.
I also find that I can't just use the cleanser by itself, as it doesn't remove oil very well. And I can't use a cream or cleansing pads, because it seems if I leave benzyl peroxide on my skin for more than a few minutes at a time, it gives me a horrible rash. I'm sort of allergic to it, but more than willing to deal with that as long as it keeps the itchy-sore-infected bumps away.
What I do is wash and my face with soap and dry it like normal. Then, I use a 10% benzyl peroxide cleanser as a mask for usually no more than a couple of minutes. Afterwards, I wash it off really, really thoroughly, especially around my eyes, even though I avoid putting it near them. Even the rinse water is enough to burn me if I don't get it all off. It does the trick, though. I'd tried everything else, (including diet changes and water-only cleansing like a previous commenter mentioned) and nothing seemed to work. I just seem prone to certain kinds of bacteria for some reason, and the benzyl peroxide kills it.
