Scared To Take Antibiotics?

Ok so I've had moderate (or possible severe) acne for about 3 years (17-20) and this is when i started to wear makeup and I believe that is how I started getting acne because I sometimes did not wash it off or did not wash it off properly. I started using the dermalogica clean start range (contains salicylic acid) and started using mineral makeup (priori brand) and that cleared me up. But what I was left with was VERY OILY SKIN and I know its because salicylic dries out your skin. So stupid me I started using another product to get rid of the oily skin even though I didn't have acne, then I started getting really bad acne but I continued to use the product.

After that I quit products altogether and started using natural things such as manuka honey cleanser and jojoba oil as a makeup remover/moisturiser. I have been doing this since january this year and my skin was calm, I had a few breakouts and I still had really bad red marks all over my face. These red marks were so bad I had to start using the body shop concealer pencil, as well (more makeup....:/). Also I started to notice pimples on my cheeks were starting to leave indents and I started to get small lumps under the skin which sometimes surfaced and sometimes didn't (i think these are cysts). This freaked me out.. and I went back to experimenting with products.

Due to me experimenting with products I am now getting really bad breakouts on both my cheeks, chin, forehead (basically everywhere). Its getting me really depressed and I was really hoping I could finally ditch the makeup but thats not happening.

I am now really wanting to just take an antibiotic and HOPEFULLY this nightmare will be over. I've contemplated taking antibiotics before but just like now I've always been scared for the following reasons; irreversible damage to the digestive system, acne comes back in most cases, ruins gut and causes more acne, inflammation of acne stays permanently??, real issue of acne is not addressed (but i believe my issue is either makeup, genes, or possibly a food insensitivity), but if it was because a food/genes then why didn't it appear earlier on in puberty?). Btw I have dieted in the past and it did not help my acne.

Anyone who has any positive experiences with antibiotics please tell me!!! I feel like this is my only hope.....

Don't bother. The acne will come back as soon as you stop and making them a part of your daily routine for an indefinite about of time can incur some serious side effects. I would consider accutane before antibiotics in most cases, because at least you get a permanent cure.

I had similar concerns too but 1 month into my antibiotics my face has cleared up dramatically. acne that comes up goes away in about a week as opposed to several weeks before.

health wise I feel absolutely no difference. I take probiotics (inner health plus) and 1 shot of yakult once a day to balance it out.

I also use AHA purchased from this website to clear my dark spots which are also fading quite rapidly now

Would not recommend it. I was on doryx 50mg. Actually, it is the only thing that ever got me clear. However, it stopped working after about a year, as my derm told me it would. This was 5 years ago and I still have acne, so I'm not sure if the doryx has been bad for y acne long-term.

Hey, thanks for replying! Did the antibiotics just not work for you, is that why you are starting accutane? And which antibiotics did you use?

Hey thanks for the reply. To be honest the thought of accutane and its side effects scares me and I really don't want to take the risk. I don't plan on taking antibiotics for a year or something just maximum 3 months (is that still too long you reckon?). I'm hoping it will help me get my acne under control somewhat and after I'm done I can continue to control it with topicals.

Hey thanks for replying. Thats great that it worked for you! If I do take antibiotics I'm also planning on taking probiotics as well, hopefully I get the same results as you! How long are you going to take the antibiotics for and which one are you taking?

Hey thanks for answering! I'm sorry to hear it didn't cure your acne, have you tried an elimination diet, maybe its something your eating thats causing the acne?

I was prescribed minocycline and have enough repeats for 3-5 months so I plan on taking it till I run out. I know for a fact that my acne is triggered by oily food so my game plan is to get back to my clear state and continue to avoid the food that triggers my acne even till after I'm completely clear.

Yes. I have been dairy-free for about 2 years. This definitely helped, but did not get me clear. I've also been on low-sugar and like 99% grain-free diet for the past few months. Again, this helped but not a cure. I've recently found that dental health has a huge impact on acne, and have been brushing, flossing, and oil-pulling often with pretty good results.

My newest venture has been to cut out BP. I'm three days in and no new spots! Once a day, I wash with Dan's cleanser, spot treat with a little BP,then moisturize with a lot of Cerave. My skin is already less oily. Drinking plenty of quality water and following a regular sleep schedule (8 hours) are both key as well i've found.
