After years of trying so many different medications and exfoliation, etc. etc. we finally got to a root problem of my sons acne and so I wanted to share it. My son has very oily skin/hair. He also liked to take very hot, very long showers, While I would have thought that was good for clearing up pimples it is actually just the opposite. We have been to dermotogists and finally to an allergist who explained that hot water causes the body to release histamines, so it inflames the skins. So the hot water was causing inflamation, infection. Also, the hot water made his skin more oily. The hot showers were causing most of the pimples!
hot water - inflamation - oily skin - pimples
As soon has my son lowered the water temp of his shower and shortened the twice daily showers his skin cleared up soooo much. Also he started using Epiduo on breakouts. It proved too strong to use every day all over, because it does exfoliate. So he uses it only on breakouts a couple times a week.
I thought this information about the long hot showers making acne worse may be helpful to others seeking clear skin. Good luck! I wish we had known years ago, it would have saved a lot of struggle for my son.
I actually went clear with paula's choice Clear line (regular strength) plus several supplements (don't know what really helped) but then in December 2013 the weather in Thailand was surprisingly cold so I took hot shower and I had breakouts. It was at the same time I started taking Oil of Oregano internally and so I don't know what really caused my breakout. It could be a die-off effect from the oregano or the irritation caused by lukewarm water.
My skin is improving again. No more lukewarm water and I take oil of oregano every 2 days. Still curious though.
Hot showers seem to worsen acne on my sons as well, their looks all red and irritated after a hot shower and any hyper pigmentation looks more pronounced and very red too. I always thought it was just a temporary effect, but obviously it has lasting effects if it inflames the skin enough to trigger more acne. I will try to remind them to dial down the temp a bit.
