Hi

I'm an 18 year old guy who has suffered from mild acne for around 4 years now. I'm very skinny (3.9% body fat) and I'm a competitive runner so exercise is not an issue.

These are the supplements I am taking

Vitamin A 25,000IU daily (started today)

Vitamin B complex (100% rda of all B vitamins)

Vitamin C powder ~ 3 grams daily

Vitamin D have been taking 10,000iu daily but severe deficiency, doctor advised to start 30,000 daily (started yesterday)

Vitamin E 400iu (started the other day)

ALA 750mg a day

Chelated zinc gluconate 25mg elemental zinc

Chromium picolinate 1000mcg (started yesterday)

Selenium 200mcg

Have also got B5 and alcar but not really taken as of yet (if I did it would be 500mg of each)

I never get a single pimple on my cheeks, I have a really vibrant complexion on all my face yet my forehead is quite oily and I get a few large red spots in random places on my forehead. I occasionally get a deeper cyst like spot on my jawline or around my chin.

I did wonder if insulin insensitivity could be an issue. I have been taking the supplements for it as you can see. However I had a milkshake yesterday that contained 52 grams of sugar, followed by a large pizza from the take away the same evening. Today, my skin looks as though its actually improved, no new spots at all. So does this eliminate my root cause being insulin insensitivity? Or could it take longer for the breakout to occur?

I drink a lot of water and herbal teas throughout the day and my diet is generally good. I live in a northern region and I spend most of my time indoors in a darkened room, unless I am running or at school. Could the root cause be a severe Vitamin D deficiency that could be corrected by the increase in Vit D supplements?

I don't know if this is the general way pimples are formed for everyone, but literally 9/10 of mine begin by a blackhead which becomes red and inflamed to cause a larger red spot.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Huh? Vitamin D has excellent reviews for acne, not causing it.

Teenagebusta,

I don't think your acne has anything to do with your diet - instead, it's probably, like most acne, hormonal (especially at 18). You're taking some great supplements, but what's your skincare regimen like? Benzoyl peroxide is excellent for preventing and healing breakouts, but it can be really drying (or you could be allergic like me). If you can't use that, I would suggest a prescription retinoid (Retin-A, Tazorac) or salicylic acid.

Try showering instead of washing your face in the sink. I get breakouts from washing my face in the sink instead I shower before doing my regimen day and night.

Try not using a cleanser also. Just use benzoyl peroxide and cetaphil moisturizer.

I only get breakouts on my forehead if im using a new cream or moisturizer that breaks me out. Try switching to another type of product.
