Hello, this may be answered elsewhere on the forum, but I've been wondering whether washing your face with water may cause acne too.

I wash in the morning and evening with cleanser, but during the day when I feel greasy, is it okay to splash some water on it? Or does that cause the body to produce excess oils too?

If you are using BP or any products during the day, you are essentially limiting the effectiveness by splashing water on it. Some people claim that even washing your face with just water can irritate the skin even more between morning and night routines. If you dont use any products during the day you could try getting a tissue peeling it into two pieces and press very gently against your face. This will absorb excess oil without irritating your skin any more than it should, however you should do it gently. All the best

Underneath gave some great advice!

I would also recommend an oil free moisture mist. They only need to be simple with a few ingredients like distilled water, some aloe Vera and chamomile tea mixed together in a spray bottle and you can make this very easily! Spray that on when you need a moisture boost or after you've done the tissue method as underneath32 mentioned.

This mix will stop excess oil if you spray it before your face gets oily.

Enjoy!

Well, I just use BP at night and then have nothing on my face throughout the day. So it shouldn't be a problem to use water, then? Or would you still recommend the tissue method instead?

Well.. In answering your question/s...

1. Water won't give you acne unless its particularly dirty water coming from the faucet. If you have a paranoia about it, use distilled water.

2. Then again, if you're trying to get rid of grease, water won't do it too well and you may end up excessively rubbing the water in your face to get the grease off, consequently rubbing the oil in further and clogging pores.

3. Constantly washing your face with water can also dry out your face from the minerals it needs and lead to acne as it creates more oil to combat the dryness.

Stick to the tissue method, look into a spray on moisturizer and you'll be fine.

First of all, I wasn't aware that you don't use products during the day. If you are not doing the regime in the day (as in bare face) and experiencing an oily face during the day, then I highly recommend using a moisturiser with an spf factor (obviously that is non-comedogenic). You make think that your skin will become even more greasy, however i personally have found that my skin becomes alot more balanced (less oily) then if I wernt using and moisturiser. Not only will a spf provide moisture, it will protect your skin from sun burn- which can complicate regime effectiveness. Hope this helps

Get some blotting sheets to get rid of the oil, they are cheap and effective.

Washing will just irritate your skin further!

And regarding the tissue issue, NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER try it with toilet tissue, it will clog your pores.

there is almost no solid evidence that washing causes more oil(correct me if am wrong) production.

if u feel greasy like after exercise or hard work,i think its okay to wash ur face.

remember thats what people always did untill the present habits got all complicated and controversial.

No, but I would imagine if you constantly wash your face, your face will adapt to the dryness (if you don't use a moisturiser) and oil production will be accelerated.

I go by the same theory that washing your hair more often makes it become greasy quicker.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

no one is asking to constantly wash face but personally i dnt understand when the whole thing about never letting clean water touch face keeping oiliness in mind.

i believe its got to do a lot with placebo effect plus the fact that products used are harsh and messes with the healthy sebum barrier.

of course if one's skin is sensitive or has any other issue, even water might irritate and cause pain.

the bottom line IMO is follow a regimen that does your skin good, doesnt necessarily mean its a general rule.

also, personally i dnt support caveman regimen.

we aint in caveman era and we face a lot more obstructions(if i may call it) in form of pollution, unhealthy environment and harmful rays etc.so a minimum level of skincare routine is probably needed.

i feel this was a lil' off topic.

for the question was whether or not he/she is to wash face.

cleansing twice with a mild wash(before and after bed) makes me feel good.plus through out the day before application of anything topical or after exercise etc i feel dirty & oily so I splash water and then dab my face dry with a clean cotton cloth.

i feel good and clean.

i am not saying its a perfect or ideal routine but i feel fine with it.

p.s this is my routine when am home.(so basically i get in touch with water every 4 to 5 hrs) but even when am out & dnt wash or anything for several hrs(say 7 to 9 hrs) i see no change ,good or bad.

although i admit i will have to test for longer to see bigger changes.
