I'm not even sure whether my acne is mild, moderate, or severe. It's persistant, I've had it since I was 15 and I'm now 21 (but in terms of physical developmental I am still definitely a teenager).
I've tried a bunch of stuff, BP, SA, TONS of BP+SA that gave me terrible chemical burns, antibiotics (oral and topical), and most of it works for a while then stops working. I've noticed that in the long run, theres no difference between spending long mornings and nights in front of the mirror with Dan's regimen and just doing nothing.
Lately, I've gotten this idea that the problem is the way I shave. My acne is pretty much exclusively on the parts of my face that I shave every day. I use a $50 electric razor that I got from Meijer, and things get REALLY BAD when I don't use electric razors, plus I don't like regular razors, they are time consuming and awkward.
I did some research and found that it might not be acne at all, and it might be folliculitis.
Anyway, I'm not sure if this is a plausible explanation or even what to do if this explanation WERE plausible, but I'm hoping some kind folks here wouldn't mind talking with me.
As you can see in the pictures, at close distances my acne looks really bad, basically everywhere, but from a more normal distance, my acne doesn't typically show up in pictures hardly at all.
Let me know if you want more pictures, tighter shots, or different angles.
Thanks!
It does look like acne, though I'm not a professional of course.
But that is strange that it would be strictly in that area of your face. What happens if you don't shave? Or is that not a possibility?
Yeah, it might just be acne. If I don't shave then I get awkward patchy uncomfortable hairs on my face. I'd rather not let it grow.
And I don't get acne anywhere else, no body acne, not on my forehead or nose, just on my jaw/lip/cheek area, where I shave.
Would you call this acne mild, moderate, or severe? I don't even know how to classify it because I don't consider myself someone who has especially bad acne but when I take these close up pictures it seems very very disgustingly gross.
Have you tried going to a dermatologist?
I had a physician prescribe me doxycycline and it essentially did nothing but I was on it for three years. When I told new physician how long I'd been on it, he told me that was awful because I probably am resistant to it now, which might be why it doesn't work. He prescribed me some creams that my pharmacist asked over $100 for so I ended up saying fuck it, I'll stick to doing nothing, it's probably just as good anyway.
I haven't been to a real derm though because I don't have very good insurance, and it's not like it's THAT bad... is it?
also my gf found my doxy one time (she's a nurse) and thought I was hiding the fact that I had an STD. Apparently doxy is also used for STDs. Just a side note there.
I know, the texture of the skin is always the most frustrating to smooth out, and pictures DEFINITELY enhance these little dents and bumps. :\ It doesn't appear that you have a lot of active acne. They look mostly like dark spots and teeny scars. I think you have moderate acne.
What kind of shaving cream do you use? Please tell me you don't dry shave. :S
Also! You must use some sort of toner after shaving (non-irritating of course). I do this with my bikini area, which is comparable to the sensitivity of your face. I get ingrown hairs and bumps if I don't exfoliate before and use witch hazel (my ultimate go-to) right after shaving.
If you want to know my honest opinion.. I don't think any of the acne medications, especially over-the-counter and dermatologist's first lines of defense, work as well as just leaving your skin ALONE. Be gentle and treat it as the fragile organ it is.

If you think it's fungal folliculitis try a dandruff shampoo mask. Apply nizoral, selson blue(spelling?) or H&S to your face and let it sit for 15-20 mins twice a day for two weeks. Just wet face with warm water, lather up with the dandruff shampoo. Let it sit, rinse it off with warm water and that's it.
If its bacterial use hibiclens wash. You can buy this at most drugstores in the first aid section. Splash face with warm water(optional) spread hibiclens on face and let it sit for 10-15 mins. Wash off with warm water and keep eyes and mouth tightly shut! It will burn your eyes and tastes horrible but it works!
Give these each two weeks. If one doesn't work then the other might. Good luck

I've tried hibiclens before.. and that stuff is pretty potent. I would not advise using this. It really irritated my skin.

You have to water it down. I would not use it full strength unless you're a doctor prepping for surgery.
I have a 7.5 fluid ounce foaming soap pump( was originally full of liquid hand soap ) that I use for my hibiclens. I just fill a normal size shot glass full of hibiclens and pour it into the foaming soap pump. Then I fill the rest of the bottle with distiled or tap water.
It's much easier on the skin that way

Ooooh that sounds like a much better idea! I might do that with my remaining stuff. How long have you been using it on your face before, and do you use it every time you wash?
It might have something to do with your hair follicles since it where you would shave, have you looked up pityrosporum folliculitis? Long name I know, but it is something that often gets confused with acne but is mainly in areas where you have hair growth, although you can get on your forehead or anywhere on your face, I guess because we have tiny hairs there too. It's basically a fungal or bacterial infections, I think antibiotics and some anti fungals can help, but if you look it up it might give you an idea? I thought I might have had this on my forehead which is why I checked it out. I'm still not sure, BP didn't do much for me either, and SA was too irritating, I'm currently on Differin which is a gentle synthetic retinoid, I think I may be getting some results but only been on it for just over a week so really too early to tell, but it helps normalise the skin cells of the pores and follicles to shed more easily and not get clogged so I'm hoping it's going in the right direction. I also have acne and blocked pores elsewhere so the differin is for everything really, maybe using a gentle retinoid might help since you have tried other things? Although you need to be really careful with them, especially if you would be shaving that area. I hope some of this helps.
oops I just noticed someone already mentioned this! Need to pay more attention next time lol my apologies...I've also heard zinc soap or sulphur can help with folliculitis and also getting tested for a yeast imbalance

I've been using it off and on for about a year. Slowly watering it down more and more until I found a ratio that isn't as drying. I only like to use it when I have cystic acne nodules present because it seems to help me. Or I'll use it if I picked at something.
You should try it watered down! You might like it better and you'll save money too because hibiclens is kinda pricey.
