Hello everyone. Im a 20 year old male. I have had acne for about 6 years and recently it has gotten much better. The past few months I have noticed little red bumps on my Lips that last anywhere from 3-7 days. I am worried it may be the herpes virus but they do not have pain and they do not crust. Also, sometimes there are a couple in a row near eachother. It looks like the same red bumps are around my mouth and under my nose. On top of that, there is redness on top of my upper lip that seemed to be there for the last couple of weeks. It is way more embarrassing than just regular acne because people think its herpes on my lips. I am seeking your opinion on what this could be. Do you think its acne, herpes or some other skin infection like perioral dermatitis. I am going to see the dermatologist but i would like to get some feedback so I could be better informed when I see him so he just doesnt look at my face for 5 seconds and give me a random cream. thanks!

Do you shave really often? I'm a girl, but perhaps it's your razor or shaving cream which is irritating your skin?

Also, do you lick your lips a lot? It could be becoming a rash..?

Use Vaseline on your lips bud. Does the trick way better than Chapstick or any of that crap. Always keep them covered in Vaseline. Especially over night. As for the pimples, do not pick on them. I know it is impossible not to pop them because you would look disgusting in public with big whiteheads. But when you do, always wash your face after and keep the pores clean. Also you can use benzoyl peroxide or some sort of gel on them after you pop them. It does look too serious. Best of luck!

I would also try not shaving for awhile. Grow a mustache! Might look cool, plus you can find out whether or not shavin is causing it.

So you do not think this is herpes? Sometimes they look like little white heads with pus in the middle, but it does not crust

That is not herpes okay? I get the same thing. Do not worry. Any really dry crusty stuff, put Vaseline on it. Do not overuse it though as it can clog pores. Pop the pimples and cleanse. Eventually they should dissipate

Self testing with specific topicals for specific kinds of dermatitis is a useful way to perform a differential diagnosis to see what the problem is, but dermatitis often involves more than one causative factor, so keep an open mind.

Perioral dermatitis is merely a description, not a diagnosis all it means is a skin rash near your mouth. Yours could be a candida-based rash. Nystatin or coconut oil will treat a candida-induced skin condition in 2 or 3 weeks.

However, if the Nystatin or coconut oil doesnt do anything at all after 2 weeks of 3x daily applications, you could test for a bacterial-induced eczema by using topical Fucidin or Bactroban for 2 weeks with 3x daily applications.

If you still have a rash, it could be a malassezia-induced condition, which is a lipid-dependent yeast that eats oils, and so the previous use of coconut oil will have made your skin condition much worse, if its malassezia. Treat malassezia yeasts with topical Nizoral cream. The active ingredient is 2% ketoconazole.

If you dont have health insurance, these drugs can be mail ordered very inexpensively from India or Thailand without a prescription, because these countries do not have prescription laws. The FDA issued a non-enforcement policy in August, 2012, so you can legally mail order small amounts from overseas for your own use only.

So you would say this is dermatitis and not acne- my acne does not really get better with the typical anibiotics

Oh, I didn't know you've tried antibiotics already, without improvement. Based on that, treat for a candida-induced condition first, and see if it improves in 2 or 3 weeks. You can buy some coconut oil at any grocery store. Then, if you see an improvement with coconut oil, after a week, you have some evidence to get a nystatin prescription from your MD. http://www.thecandidadiet.com/research/antimicrobial-properties-of-coconut-oil.pdf

What toothpaste do you use? I used a baking soda toothpaste that caused something similar.
