PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME OUT.

I have moderate acne, which has gotten increasingly widespread and worse over the last year or so. A quick round-up of my acne experience is this:

i began developing under the skin kind of nodules on my forehead when i turned about 18, prior to this my skin had been pretty much perfect. When i was about 14 i had back acne on my back but this had pretty much completely cleared by this point, if its not one thing then its another!

anyway, i would only have about 2 of these spots at a time or at worst 4 and occasionally get the odd spot on my chin, so nothing too bad. When i got to uni a year later i was increasingly fed up and went to the doctor who put me on tetracycline, which did nothing for the 6 weeks i was on it, then about a month later it magically cleared, However, suffice to say it came back about a month later. I soon began using zynerit topical roll on thingy and that was brilliant, it pretty much cleared my skin, although it wouldn't prevent breakouts, sort of kept them at bay, however by the summer my skin cleared well in the sun so neglected the zineryt as did not want to wear it in bright heat, once the summer was over however, i had run out of zineryt and my skin began to breakout worse than ever.

So i began my 2nd year of uni will relatively clear and lovely tanned skin, and withih a month i had horribly broken out all over my forehead, worse than ever before. I went to the doctor again, this time they prescribed me differin gel and dianette, i began breaking out twice as bad within the first couple of weeks, i put this downto the differin, so i changed t the isotetin gel stuff. Anyway, long story short almost instantly the pill made me so depressed, and constipated, to the point that i was completely bloated and in so much discomfort for the entire 3 months which i took it. My skin, went from bad to worse, a=which made me even more depressedm tot he point that i stopped going out and cried to my mum on the phone every evening.

After i stopped taking the pill my side-effects stopped pretty instantly, i went to a nutritionist this time, having been completely disillusioned with all these harsh meds. I went back on zineryt and cut out sugar, fatty foods, refined wheat etc etc, anyway the zineryt helped for another 2 months or so but by february time this year it had started breaking out again, and must have become resistant.

At this point i realised that my skin became enflamed and spots formed when i was stressed, however as that is quite a lot of the time, there never seems to be a point where it stops.

SO 2 months ago i went to a proper derm for the first time and she prescribed spironolactone and doxycicline and climandycin gel- rather than get better as expected my skin has actually gotten worse and the acne has moved from primarily my forehead to parts of my cheeks and a lot more prevalent on my chin, where i would only ever get one every now and again, now tghere are about 10.

does anyone know if this is due tot he spirionolactone? is it possible that like the dianette my acne isnt hormonal, or at least not in the sense that ti is caused by excess androgens????

sorry that this is so long-winded, but would really appreciate any advice, as at my wits-end

thanks x

Hello. First off, welcome. You are among people that are where you are or have been where you are. Look around the forums and you are bound to learn a few things. Regarding spiro, it can take up to 6 months to see improvement and like retinoids, many people break out worse for the first few weeks/months.

Whatever your regimen, stick to it for 3 -6 months without any adjustments and then reevaluate.

Good Luck

hi thank you for your reply!

i know i should remain patient, but do you think that the spiro may be causing the acne round my chin and jow which i neve had before but is appearing on a dailiy basis? my forehead remains the same level that it always way, if a little bit worse. It's just that antibiotics have worked in the past, but the pill and ths so far hasnt? so i feel its aggrivating it rather than helping?

thanks x
