Hi,

I am new to acne.org but have read a lot of topics on this site.

I have been suffering with acne since i was 17 years old. I had mild acne on my cheeks back then and used benyl peroxide for my acne treatment. But it caused my face to swell up and become really red. I waited for my skin to calm down and then after 3 weeks started using differin which worked well. My acne went away and i only had a few scars. I used to use Retin-A micro 0.01% for about 2 years.

Recently, from a month ago ive been getting constant whiteheads on my cheeks and have a lot of redness after it. I havent popped these just applied spot treatment hoping they would go away. But they keep coming back. I went to a dermatologist and he gave me Tactuo and Tetracycine anti-biotic pills for 6 months. I applied tactuo last week on one night and after 2 days (did not apply tactuo the next day) my face had a reaction to the tactuo it became all red and tight.

I am now just waiting for my cheeks to recover (applying fucidin h cream and taking reactine) but i still have one or two white heads that keep popping up. I have extremely sensitive skin and also have eczema on my hands.

What kind of an exfloiator should i use? i use cetaphil gentle cleanser twice a day. My dermatologist has given me toleraine ultra for a moisturizer and skinceuticals gentle cleanser. I am afraid to use these products as my skin is sensitive.

Also, should i go back to differin to cure my acne? i do not want to take tetracycline as i am afraid after 8 months my acne will come back.

I am thinking of going on a gluten free diet as i have heard it cures acne in a lot of people.

Please provide me with some input. It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

I would continue on the antibiotic pills. You're not gonna see a change in your skin right away from the pills because it will be destroying all the bacteria that's causing you to breakout. If you have sensitive skin I wouldnt recommend using an exfoliation, because an exfloiator removes the dead skins that's on top of your skin which can make your skin sensitive. If you have oily skin I would recommend an exfloiator but since you don't. I don't think it's in your best bet. Also I would take an antibiotic and just use differin because an antibiotic isn't something you'll need to take after six months. As what my derm. told me. Every month you go in while taking the antibiotic is when he will tell you to start taking it less and less and then you will only need to use the topical treatment. Now I'm 19 years old I've been suffering with acne for 7 years and I've tried everything and I've even tried different birth controls which can also add to the cause of acne or help treat acne where I would only get it during my cycle. Right now I'm prescribed doxycycline and Epiduo. Now my insurance may or may not cover the antibiotic and I've heard great great things about it and I've also heard bad things like sun sensitivity and stomach aches. But that's normal. You're every day skin care routine should always have some type of sunscreen for not on the face but for the body but yes changing your diet can help with your acne but it will not make it go completely away. Acne is something someone will always have, you just have to feel confident in your own skin. (:
