Hey snowqueen. thanks for all your advice about which mositurizer to use. I might try and find that dove one you were talking about, sorry the link didnt work, but it was the same link so it turned out to be right. I took your advice with the paulas choice....I ordered samples of the Essential moisturizing sunscreen and also the Hydrating treatment cream. I was wondering though, i know her products are formulated very well, i love her cleansers and her moisture gel works very well, just not heavy enough like i said. But in your first page it says dont use moisturizers in cream form, are those 2 bad to use? I figured since she formulates hers better that maybe they wouldnt be as pore clogging or irritating. just thought i would ask what your take is on them. thanks
After being on Dan's regimen for ALMOST 2 months, my face is getting better. I havn't had any major breakouts but i am now getting small pimples that i can usually pop and they go away within a day or two. Since i used to have them all over my cheeks, my cheeks are still read. Is there a product that will help to reduce my old acne so my skin will look even more clear. Thanks!
Also, i only read the first couple of pages but how are those products compared to the cleanser and BP products that Dan has created. Those are the ones I use.
Hey sorry snowqueen I need a little help here. I went to my GP and she gave me a birth control pill called dianette but she warned me that I must stop once my acne clear. Do you know how long will it take for me to clear because I am breaking out like crazy now. I'm only into my 2nd week of taking the pill. She also gave me Retin-A to use but in the cream form 0.05%.I have extremely oily skin and am using a cleanser which she told me to is this cleanser ok? Its called NeoCeuticals Antibacterial Facial Cleanser - PHA 4 and has the ingredients:
Active Ingredient: Triclosan 0.3%.
Other Ingredients: Ammonium Chloride, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Extract, Aqua (Water), Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Gluconolactone, Glycine, Lauryl Alcohol, Methylparaben, Panthenol, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Phenoxyethanol, Polyquaternium-10, Propylene Glycol, Propylparaben, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Triethanolamine.
I also use this toner to curb the oil on my face:
NeoStrata Oily Skin Solution - AHA 8
Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Alcohol denat., Glycolic Acid, Propylene Glycol, Ammonium Hydroxide, Polyquaternium-10, Chlorhexidine Digluconate, Polysorbate 20, Tetrasodium EDTA.
I don't use moisturizer because my face is oily but should I use one? If so what do you recommend? I live in Singapore so sadly there aren't many brands here so the only skin care brands here are clean and clear, Neutrogena, clinque, cetaphil, Nivea, Olay, Biotheram, Lancome, eucerin.
I use the Neutrogena Ultra sheer Dry touch sunblock SPF 50 is it any good or will it cause skin breakout? It is necessary for me to apply sunblock because Singapore is a tropical country and the sun is very strong.
Oh I forgot to add that the pill as my GP say may cause some breakouts at first. But I really want to know how long it takes to clear cos I am so self-conscious now.
Hello there. I was looking into the eucerin products. My derm recommended them and i know a few people who use them and love them. I wanted to try out their redness relief line. Mostly because i have a lot of redness from my acne. But sometimes even when thats gone, my face is still red. I saw that you had their cleanser as a decent one to use on your first page, so I know thats alright. I wanted to ask you about the redness relief moisturizers and also their sensitive skin moisturizer with spf 30...i'll post the ingredient links below. I skimmed through them and i dont know whats good and bad, but i did see denat. alcohol as one of the top ingredients of both redness relief moisturizers, ones green tinted the other isnt. I think thats a skin irritant? But does that mean it will be irritating for me for sure? Im asking because i know a few people who use them and say they work great and have no problems or irritation at all.

Hi Snow Queen!
I've been using this regimen: Cetaphil face wash, Paula's BHA, Paula's 2.5% bp, Neutrogena sunblock, for the past month. I've had great results.
The acne on my cheeks has cleared up. So has the random, huge cyst on my nose. I do get 3-4 whiteheads on my forehead though, but I think that can't be helped.
Once a week I put yoghurt/jojoba oil on my face to get rid of my dry skin. [i know you haven't recommended this, but it has worked wonders.]
I want to thank you for all the advice!
Hello snow queen, i was hoping you could take a look at my cleanser and mositurizer ingredients and tell me if they look alright. Im using them in conjunction with Dans regimen. My biggest think with moisturizers is finding one that wont cause acne. thanks
Cleanser:
Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Disodium Cocamphodiacetate, Glycol Distearate, PEG 7 Glyceryl Cocoate, PEG 5 Lanolate, Cocamide MEA, Laureth-10, Citric Acid, PEG 120 Methyl Glucose Diloleate, Lanolin Alcohol, Imidazolidinyl Urea
Moisturizer:
Purified Water, Glycerin, Caprylic/CapricTriglyceride, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth-20, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceramide 3, Ceramide 6 II, Ceramide 1, Hyaluronic Acid, Cholesterol, Dimethicone, Polysorbate 20, Polyglyceryl 3 Diisostearate, Potassium Phosphate, Dipotassium Phosphate, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Cetyl Alcohol, Disodium EDTA, Phytosphingosine, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum
Hey question for you. I was using cetaphil moisturizer, and i hate it. Very heavy and greasy, but i didnt want to waste it. I finished it and when i was in walmart today i picked up an Olay sensitive skin lotion, I wanted to know what you thought of the ingredients first and i figured if that looks good and i like it, i'll use the cleanser since i find their stuff really cheap and i can get away from cetaphil. I put the lotion ingredients first and the cleanser second. Plus i have another question. A lot of products ive been looking at, from body washes to face lotion have vitamins in them. Like this lotion i bought has vitamin b5 and b3 in it. The olay body wash i use has vitamin a (retinol palmitate) which was at the very end of the list, but is it alright to use products containing vitamins? I mean sometimes i wonder why they put vitamin a, vitamin b3 and vitamin e in a bodywash or in moisturizers. thanks
Water, Glycerin, Isohexadecane, Naicinamide (Vitamin B3), Dimethicone, Isoprppyl Isoterate, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Cetyl Alcohol, Sucrose Polycottonseedate, Stearyl Alcohol, Polycrylamide, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Panthenol (Provitamin B5), C13-14 Isoparaffin, Benzyl Alcohol, Dimethiconol, Ethylparaben, Sorbitan Stearate, Titanium Dioxide, Polyquaternium 10, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Propylparaben, Laureth-7, PEG 100 Stearate, Stearic Acid, Aloe Barbadensis (Leaf Juice), Disodium EDTA, Propylene Glycol, Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract (Matricaria), Sodium Hydroxide, Methylparaben, Ammonium Polyacrylate
Cleanser:
Water, Glycerin, Sodium Myristoyl Sarcosinate, PEG 120 Methyl Glucose Diloleate, Sodium Lauroamphoacetate, Disodium Lauroamphodiacetate, Glycol Distearate, PEG 150 Pentaerithritol Tetrastearate, Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, Polyquaternium 10, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Phenoxyethanol, Cocamide MEA, Citric Acid, DMDM Hydantoin, Disodium EDTA, Laureth-9
The Olay moisturizer is good (I would use this over Cetaphil's personally as it contains more beneficial ingredients), though it might be too heavy for you also. The only concern with it I have is that it does contain some potentially problematic thickeners which do cause breakouts for some people (which you'll notice at least a few weeks after using the moisturizer since clogged pores don't happen overnight). That doesn't mean that this product will indefinately worsen your breakouts, though. Even if you think it might, it can be very tricky determining whether or not a product/treatment is causing you to experience more breakouts because there are so many factors which can affect the skin (weather, water, hormones, allergies, sensitivities, etc...). Make sure you only moisturize areas of dry skin rather than the entire face, since unnecessary moisturization can also cause problems.
The cleanser should be fine to use.
Vitamins can be very beneficial in skincare products, and can (depending on the vitamin) serve as antioxidants, cell-communicating ingredients, ingredients which speed wound healing, water-binding agents, etc.... However, to assume that vitamins provide the same benefits when applied topically as they do when taken internally is problematic because the skin and body are so complex. These ingredients are best used in leave-on products because they get rinsed away in cleansers.
Lorrie said:Hi SnowQueen! I ran across a product that I am interested in and I was wondering if you had any knowledge about it. It is called Bioskincare. Here are the ingredients if you are not familiar with it:BIOSKINCAREIngredients / 50 grams.

I know. I know. It has snail snot in it which is a totally disgusting thought. Is there any truth to their claims that it is good for skin renewal, skin injuries, skin burns, acne breakouts, acne scarring, rosacea, keloid treatment, stretch marks, keratosis pilaris, actinic keratosis, wrinkles, age spots, melasma, sun burn, warts, ingown hair, razor bumps and folliculitis? You can read more about it here: [Removed link]Any knowledage you have of this product would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! Lorrie
To the best of my knowledge there isn't any substantial research regarding "snail snot," LOL. Notice how the research being sited was performed by the company/those intending to sell the product and that specifics about these "studies" have been left out. Many products feature special ingredients which sound promising, but in reality the claims made about these ingredients are based on assumptions rather than real evidence. Another thing is that you don't know how much of this miracle ingredient there actually is; there might only be a tiny amount of it. If you want to try it, the other ingredients look fine. Your skin can certainly benefit from some of these other ingredients, like the squalene and hyaluronic acid. I'm guessing that if you use this product you shouldn't expect much more than smoother, softer skin, which can be great, but can also be obtained from other less expensive products.
Hi SnowQueen. I was pointed over here by Lion Queen, who suggested I ask about the ingredients in a cleanser and a moisturizer.
I'm dealing with clogged pores and whiteheads. Haven't had inflamed pimples for a long time. And I'm currently in the process of getting regular facials.
I'd appreciate any help with the following questions. Thanks so very, very much.
1. Do you have thoughts about SpectroJel:
New pH Balanced Formula for Sensitive, Problem Prone Skin (because the information for this product is not available on the Spectro Skin Care website):
Purified Water, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Hypromellose, Polysorbate 20, Cetyl Alcohol (Moisturizer), Hydrated Silica, Dimethicone Copolyol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Sorbitan Oleate.
2. And, do you see any Red flags in the following moisturizer ingredients:
Day Cream
Water, Cyclomethicone, Squalane, Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, PEG-75 Stearate, Yeast Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea), Leaf Extract, Retinyl Palmitate, Phospholipids, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Propylene Glycol, Xanthan Gum, Ceteth-20, Steareth-20, Polysorbate 60, Sodium Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Butylparaben, Propylparaben, Ethylparaben, Methylparaben
[i love the way this day cream makes my skin feel. But maybe I'm better off just using Emu Oil?]
SpectroJel is fine to use if your skin is easily irritated by most other cleansers. None of the ingredients in your moisturzer raise any red flags.
Sorry to bombard you with questions, but someone recommended the Sally Hershberger line to me. I'm looking at their cleanser and sunscreen and am wondering if anything raises any red flags.
1. Sally Hershberger Face Wash

The cleanser looks fine. Your sunscreen is probably OK, although it would be better if I could see the percentages of the sunscreen ingredients. Also, oxybenzone protects against UVB rays (which is not mentioned above) and some UVA rays, though not enough to stand alone as the only UVA-protecting ingredient (which it's not; titanium dioxide is also included).
Hey snowqueen. thanks for all your advice about which mositurizer to use. Cream moisturizers are not bad to use if you truly have dry skin and need an emolient moisturizer. However, the thickeners cream moisturizers contain to give them their cream consistancies worsen breakouts for some people (though not for everyone), which is why I recommend those with acne-prone skin avoid them.
After being on Dan's regimen for ALMOST 2 months, my face is getting better. I havn't had any major breakouts but i am now getting small pimples that i can usually pop and they go away within a day or two. Unfortunately the best treatment for red marks is time; there are no topical products which work miracles. Exfoliants, both manual and chemical, help speed the healing process, as do products like Retin-A, but they can only do so much. Laser treatments like V-Beam can work wonders, but they are expensive and require multiple treatments. I recommend laser treatments only if your red marks are very slow to fade and you feel that the cost is worth it (my V-Beam treatments cost $210 each).
Are you referring to the section of this site for which users can rate products? Product reviews can be beneficial when deciding which product to buy, but they shouldn't be the deciding factor because what worked for someone else might not work for you. Also, you can't always know what other products/treatments a person was using at the same time, how long a person used those products, or whether or not a person properly used the products. In addition, some products featuring SPF are not broad spectrum (meaning they don't sufficiently protect against UVA rays), but because damage from UVA rays is not always immediately noticed users of sunscreens lacking broad-spectrum protection assume they're using a good product. I find product reviews most helpful for determining how a product feels on the skin, how practical it is, and how easy it is to apply.
The DKR Cleanser and Gel are fine to use.
Hey sorry snowqueen I need a little help here. I went to my GP and she gave me a birth control pill called dianette but she warned me that I must stop once my acne clear. I also use this toner to curb the oil on my face:
NeoStrata Oily Skin Solution - AHA 8
Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Alcohol denat., Glycolic Acid, Propylene Glycol, Ammonium Hydroxide, Polyquaternium-10, Chlorhexidine Digluconate, Polysorbate 20, Tetrasodium EDTA.

I apologize but I really can't comment on what you should expect from using birth control pills. Your questions regarding that would be better answered in the Prescription Acne Medications Forum.
I'm surprised that your dermatologist gave you the cream form of Retin-A given that you have oily skin. In my opinion Retin-A Micro (probably the 0.04% concentration) would have been superior for you to use since its in gel form, which is much more lightweight and better for those with oily skin. I'm guessing her reasoning for giving you the cream instead was that it offers a more controlled release of tretinoin, making it less irritating than the original gel formula for Retin-A. Retin-A Micro, though, is thought to be superior to the original Retin-A Gel because it has a special delivery system of tretinoin which makes it gentler and more effective, so again, I'm surprised she didn't prescribe you that. However, I'm not a dermatologist.
As far as I know there is no conclusive research regarding triclosan's effectiveness on acne. Also, some people say they are sensitive to it, though I wonder if that has more to do with the other ingredients in a triclosan cleanser, such as harsh cleansing agents. Since it's in a rinse-off product, it's hard to say that you'd be getting much more benefit from it as opposed to using a gentle unmedicated cleanser. Other than that I would think it's fine to use.
I don't recommend your toner at all because it lists alcohol denat as the second ingredient, making it too irritating. This is especially true given your use of Retin-A. It can be beneficial to use chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid in conjunction with Retin-A, but your toner is not a good option. Paula's Choice makes an 8% glycolic acid product in gel form that would be a good lightweight option for you.
It is necessary for everyone to apply sunscreen daily unless you happen to live somewhere that the sun doesn't shine for a good part of the year. That being said, your sunscreen is fine. I can't tell you that it will or won't cause breakouts for you though, as different things cause different people to breakout. I can tell you that many people on this site like Neutrogena Dry-Touch Sunscreens, though.
To absorb excess shine you might consider using oil-blotting sheets during the day, such as those made by Biore, using clay masks, and wearing a sheer powder (preferrably one without cornstarch or rice starch, which can act as food for bacteria and worsen inflammatory breakouts).
VAS said:Is this ok to use as a sunscreen? It has the ingredients and it's broad sprectrum like you say should be used, but i was just wondering if it's ok since it's a spray and not a lotion.
[Removed link]
I wouldn't recommend it because it is alcohol-based. In addition it contains Menthyl PCA, which will provide additional irritation which can be recognized by a cooling sensation.
Hello there. I was looking into the eucerin products. My derm recommended them and i know a few people who use them and love them. I wanted to try out their redness relief line. Redness Relief Moisturizer Green tinted:

Sensitive Skin Moisturizer spf 30 Ingredients:
Active: Octocrylene, Octinoxate, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Ensulizole
Water, Glycerin, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cyclohexasiloxane, Ceteareth 20, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Sodium Lactate, Lactic Acid, Hydrogenated Cocoglycerides, VP/Hexadecene Copolymer, PEG 40 Castor Oil, Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate, Xanthan Gum, Phenoxyethanol, Edta, Alumina, Simethicone, Sodium Hydroxide, DMDM Hydantoin
sorry theres so many, but i figured i would have you check all 3 of them out and then i would go from there with which one to buy. thanks for your help.
The Redness Relief Tinted Moisturizer is OK; not great, but not horrible. The alcohol denat isn't very high up on the ingredients list, but it's still high enough up that some people might experience problems from it. Some people are sensitive to coloring ingredients in cosmetics, but I think you'd be more likely to have a problem with not blending in the green all the way. The untinted version looks very similar to the tinted version, but without the tint.
The SPF 30 Moisturizer looks good. On a personal note, I tried one of Eucerin's SPF 30 moisturizers for sensitive skin (though the ingredients were not the same) and hated it as it was very greasy. However, my mom, who has very dry skin, loved it. But I don't know how significant my experience is to you because like I said, the formulation looks different.
So I guess its a bad idea to use an electric shaver for my face. I have had troubling breakouts near my sideburns and along my jawline. : <
I'm not really the best person to ask about facial shaving. I usually use Dan's advice, and from what I understand he doesn't like electric shavers.

Hello snow queen, i was hoping you could take a look at my cleanser and mositurizer ingredients and tell me if they look alright. Im using them in conjunction with Dans regimen. My biggest think with moisturizers is finding one that wont cause acne. thanks
Cleanser:
Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Disodium Cocamphodiacetate, Glycol Distearate, PEG 7 Glyceryl Cocoate, PEG 5 Lanolate, Cocamide MEA, Laureth-10, Citric Acid, PEG 120 Methyl Glucose Diloleate, Lanolin Alcohol, Imidazolidinyl Urea
Moisturizer:
Purified Water, Glycerin, Caprylic/CapricTriglyceride, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth-20, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ceramide 3, Ceramide 6 II, Ceramide 1, Hyaluronic Acid, Cholesterol, Dimethicone, Polysorbate 20, Polyglyceryl 3 Diisostearate, Potassium Phosphate, Dipotassium Phosphate, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Cetyl Alcohol, Disodium EDTA, Phytosphingosine, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Carbomer, Xanthan Gum
The cleanser looks good, and so does the moisturizer. I can't tell you that it the moisturizer won't cause you to breakout, but you would be less likely to experience breakouts if you moisturized only dry areas of skin (moisturizer mixes with excess sebum and traps dead skin cells against the skin's surface, increasing the risk of breakouts). Also, if you're not doing so already I strongly recommend wearing a broad-spectrum SPF 15 or higher sunscreen (broad spectrum sunscreens provide sufficient protection against both UVB and UVA rays and contain at least one of these ingredients: titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, avobenzone, mexoryl sx, and tinosorb). You can check Part II of the first post to this thread for sunscreen suggestions.
Hey there snowqueen. I was reading thorugh the posts about a week ago and i noticed the one post about the cleanser with Triclosan in it. I know there are no conclusive studies, but i personally think it helps. I switched to a cleanser with that in awhile back and saw great results with it. Anywho, after seeing that post i ordered that cleanser, for the fact that its only $12 compared to my last one at $25. You said to her that it looks fine to use. I like it so far, ive seen some more dryness and irritation lately, but i think that might be from the green cream plus the madelic acid regimen i just started. well i just started the green cream on top. The first ingredient in that cleanser is Ammonium Chloride, is this safe to use with that so high on the list? Isnt that table salt, and dont they normally use that as an abrasive in scrubs? I could be wrong but i wanted to double check that its an alright cleanser before i continue to use it. thanks for your help.

The ingredients for the cleanser are in this case listed in alphabetic order and not in order of highest concentration (I overlooked that once before too, so don't feel bad). In cosmetics it's an alkaline salt that's used to help adjust the pH level products and is used in safe concentrations.
Hi thanks for replying, that helped a lot. I might just go and order that glycolic acid gel. I just have a question about Retin-A. I have been using it for a couple of years, 5 to be exact so is there a possibility of me getting resistance to Retin-A? I use the 0.05% cream. I still have some acne on my face so I'm not sure whether its working. My derm says that if I want, I can apply Retin-A twice a day instead of once. Is that recommended? I wash my face 3 times a day so its ok for me to apply at night and afternoon when I'm not in the sun. Can I? Also I heard that Retin-A has different concentrations, does a higher concentration work better?
Lastly back acne is also a problem for me, can I apply Retin-A on it? I'm on birth control as well as topical clindamycin so will Retin-A be affected if I apply a coat of Retin-A, then the topical clindamycin? I'm allergic to benzoyl peroxide by the way so Dan's regimen was a complete failure for me.( Just in case you want to know and have any other suggestions)
Haha yea i def. did overlook that. Im glad you said something though, now i dont feel as bad about using it. Although my face is a little more dryer and doesnt seem to be stopping, so i may have to eliminate the cleanser. But i was wondering why when i went to the website i buy it off of, the ingredients were in a different order, now i understand. thanks for making me aware of that.

One doesn't become "immune" to Retin-A, but it can work better for you at one point in time than at another. The reason has more to do with you (and sometimes your environment) than with the treatment. For example, if a person was able to keep breakouts under control with a simple regimen of cleansing and then suddenly started experiencing worse breakouts, that doesn't mean that the cleanser didn't stop doing its job of cleansing the skin. Granted, with some antibacterial treatments (both oral and topical) bacteria can become resistant over time, but this is not the case with Retin-A.
I'm not a dermatologist, but it surprises me that your dermatologist says to apply the Retin-A twice daily even though the makers of Retin-A recommend a once daily application. It would make more sense to me to increase the concentration of tretinoin. Also, I would ask about switching to Retin-A Micro (the 1% concentration, if your dermatologist agrees), which has been found to be gentler and more effective than the cream versions of Retin-A. If after using Retin-A Micro and/or higher concentrations of tretinoin your skin doesn't improve within three months, you should ask your dermatologist about trying other types of retinoids like Tazorac and Differin.
You can apply Retin-A to the back area, as well as to other areas of the body which commonly experience acne breakouts, such as the chest. Clindamycin shouldn't interfere witht the effectiveness of Retin-A. Benzoyl peroxide, another disinfectant, will, but that's not a problem for you since you can't use it anyway. Other products that interfere with the effectiveness of Retin-A are those having alkaline pH levels, like bar soap. Most skincare products you find in the store do not have alkaline pH levels.

If you're still using the irritating toner you mentioned before that might be what's causing your dryness. Also, if you have been using Retin-A you should expect dryness during the first few weeks. Otherwise, switching cleansers might be the right thing to do. You might like Olay's Gentle Foaming Face Wash for Sensitive Skin.

I wouldn't recommend it because it is alcohol-based. In addition it contains Menthyl PCA, which will provide additional irritation which can be recognized by a cooling sensation.
GAHH. I always end up buying products that you don't like... Ok thanks, i will buy one of the other more expensive neutrogena products.
