Hello,
I currently use a zinc soap bar with cetaphil gentle cleanser, Benton BHA aloe toner (0.5% BHA), with the regimens 2.5% benzoyl peroxide and the regimens 10% glycolic acid lotion as the moisturizer (I also have the regimens regular moisturizer, which I used to mix half and half with the glycolic, but for whatever reason my skin doesn't like the moisturizer as much anymore).
Anyway, I'm trying to go up to 1% BHA in a toner, and one of the only ones I can find that also has calming ingredients like the benton one, is the Exposed skin clearing tonic with the following ingredients:Active Ingredient: Salicylic Acid (1.0%) Inactive Ingredients: water, glycolic acid, propylene glycol, azelaic acid, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) distillate, dimethylethanolamine, phenoxyethanol, sodium hydroxide, camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract, passiflora edulis (passion) flower extract, aloe barbadensis leaf extract, salvia officinalis (sage) leaf extract, fragrance.
However, since it also includes glycolic acid and azelaic acid, I wasn't sure if that was too many actives to add with the regimens benzoyl peroxide and glycolic acid lotion?
The other option is the Exposed skin care clear pore serum with the following ingredients:Active Ingredient: Salicylic Acid (1.0%) Inactive Ingredients: water, hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) distillate, propylene glycol, glycerin, spiraea ulmaria (meadowsweet) extract , polyacrylate crosspolymer-6, triethanolamine, dl panthenol, glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) root extract , camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf extract , fragrance, ocimum basilicum (basil) extract.
Or would this one be a better fit with the benzoyl peroxide and glycolic acid?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

No red flags in any of the ingredients.

But...

Regarding the added glycolic and azelaic acid, they don't put percentages, so hard to say on that. I do think it's probably best not to overload on actives though.

A couple other things:

  • I recommend using Acne.org AHA+ on it's own. Not half and half with Moisturizer. But only once every other day. It should work best that way.
  • Are you 100% clear?

Thanks Dan. So would it be better to use their salicylic acid serum prior to the regimens BP then instead of the toner? And if so, how long is a good wait time between using that and the regimens BP?

Your instructions for the regimens moisturizer and glycolic acid used to be that you could use half and half if your skin is used to it.

However, since the formula changed I get more white heads that are partially below the skin, like black heads, with the regimens moisturizer and the glycolic acid. But I think theres less with just using the glycolic acid lotion as my moisturizer after the regimens BP every night. Sometimes I'll switch to the moisturizer, but I end up getting more white heads. Otherwise I'm mostly clear.

Is it not okay to use the glycolic every night?

Also, if I can find out the percentages on the toners glycolic and azelaic acid, how low would they need to be, to be okay to use with the regimens BP and glycolic acid lotion?

Try the AHA on its own. Not mixed. But not every day. Every other day. It's very strong, and you don't want to overdo it.

I also wouldn't add a bunch of other stuff in. A good plan:

  • Super gently wash your skin with a non-medicated liquid cleanser made for sensitive skin (a reputable baby shampoo will even work).
  • Apply BP very gently.
  • Apply a different brand of Moisturizer. People can be sensitive to any ingredient. You never know. So if Acne.org Moisturizer isn't agreeing with you, try a different one, but something simple without actives in it. Something light, for sensitive skin, and without comedogenic ingredients.
  • And then every other night apply full strength AHA+.

I would do that until you're completely clear and then you can change 1 variable at a time and see if you can stay clear.
