I tried dermarolling for the first time using a $20 0.5mm dermaroller from Amazon. I tried it on my arms first and then my face. Both times, I couldn't tell if the dermaroller punctured my skin or not. I couldn't see any visible holes, even if I stretch my skin. My skin turns red, but there's no bleeding at all. I tried pushing really hard on my arm, but that doesn't produce any holes either.
Is a 0.5mm dermaroller suppose to produce visible holes?
1. You're better off with a 1mm derma stamp than a dermaroller. Dermarollers can create trenches under the surface of the skin that can result in more damage than benefit.
2. A 0.5 mm probably won't help much with scars. With collagen induction therapy, you're wanting to penetrate into the dermis and "injure" it to provoke fibroblasts and thus induce collagen. You'll want at least a 1mm derma stamp to accomplish this depending on how deep the scar is.
3. I can't recall if 0.5mm results in visual holes in the skin, but there may be a chance that the needles you are using are on the dull side. I could be wrong about this though, I haven't used that short of a needle in a very long time.
4. Redness is normal, however, and since 0.5mm is relatively short there shouldn't be any bleeding.
