I'm 17 and have a couple shallow indents (Kinda like box scars) on each cheek. Each are less that .5 mm. The acne that caused them went away a couple monthes ago and redness is still present. What are the chances of these scars going away? I had some scarring on my temples when I was 16 that went away in under a year when I was puttiing this healing stuff on it called clense and heal but I fear that my skin has changed since.
I have those kinds of scars on my cheeks too! I'm thinking maybe a few medium strength peels will help soften/reduce them and get rid of the redness. I don't think they go away on their own, even less than .5 mm is still a significant amount of collagen loss to come back on its own unfortunately. Let's just count ourselves lucky that shallow scars are easier to deal with than deep ones (:

How much collagen can be recovered from scarring?
I'm no expert, so I can only speak from my own experience...I've had tiny little nicks in my skin from small acne fill in over a couple months. But anything more than that doesn't show much improvement. That's why a lot of acne treatments are all about 'stimulating collagen production', it doesn't seem to be something that the body does itself, like it produces collagen but not enough to fill the holes back up.
yeah once the collagen is lost (which produces the scar due to the skin being uneven on the surface) the body does not reproduce the collagen lost. It must be stimulated to grow back by the creation of a wound. This is why you hear about treatments like lasers, dermabrasions, skin needly etc. If you have shallow scars, a course of laser treatments would probably cure you. Even for very shallow scars, Retin A could get rid of some over time since it exfoliates the skin.
