Hi everyone,
So i'm finally clear of acne by using the regimen from acne.org. Realy happy with this but the acne left some scars on my face and mostly on my back.
Today I went to an dermatologist for the first time in my life. It was a private clinic and on the website they said they were specialized in acne scars. In my opinion it was a total disaster. This guy said there was nothing people could do about acne scars and none of the treatments available would work against it. The only thing that would slightly help he said was probably roaccutane.
Since i read otherwise on the internet and on this forum about treating acne scars I didn't realy take this guy seriously. Again, I think this consult today was a waiste of money and time..
Now I realy don't know what to do next. I know the scars won't fade forever but is there something I can do? Also, I don't know how to choose my clinic next time. Do I go for a private clinic or can I better go to a hospital? I live in the Netherlands.
Thanks already,
Dan.
Hiya Dan!
Like aanabill, I am dumbfounded as to why a doctor would suggest Accutane for scarring. That won't help at all.
Also, too late that you've spent your money there now but for future note, think twice before you go to a consultation that is not free. Consultations should not cost you anything. Doctors that charge you just to look at your skin briefly and offer you off-handed advice do not deserve your money. It is hard to pick the right clinic but in my experience you shouldn't be looking for a clinic. You should be looking for that one professional who you can place your trust in. My experiences with clinics have always been negative. I finally found someone who was willing to listen, and who takes me seriously. She and I are now more friends than work items, lol! My point is that you need to hone in on someone you know is skilled to treat your skin in the way that you want it to be treated instead of a clinic that messes up your files between doctors (nightmare!).
There are many, many things you can do to treat your scarring! But in order for all of us to give you advice we'd need to know more about your skin. What kind of scarring are you dealing with? Ice-pick, rolling, boxcar, raised? How deep is your scarring? Can you feel the indentations/lumps with your fingers? Can you stretch your skin out and see if your scars disappear?
There is hope, chin up!
Hej,
Thanks for the replies. Great to hear there is still hope.
I know I have a few ice picks in my face. Few on my right cheek and some on both temples (Its called temples I believe ). Finally I have one or two in between my eyebrows. These are all ice picks I believe. I'm lucky... it's not that bad in my face, but I still want it gone.
My back is another case. I can't realy take a good look at it so that's a problem. But i know my scarring is worse there. Would it help to take a picture of my back so you guys can take a look at that? And will this picture be treated discrete on this forum?

You're in the Netherlands, whereabouts are you from? I'm from Belgium and I know of two very good dermatologists in Belgium (one in Brussels, one in Antwerp), who are very concerned with aesthetical aspects of dermatology as well. One has helped me very well in the past with acne and scarring, the other one is actively helping me now. Let me know if that's an option for you!

It really depends on the country. Here every consultation costs, as a rule. It does make sense to me since you are making an appointment with a doctor who'll spend a considerable amount of their work time just to consider your case and give you advice, but of course it's a shame to be spending that money if the consultation doesn't lead anywhere. The best thing would be to have some kind of insurance that would cover the costs, but of course every one doesn't have that luxury. In that case, you just have to choose wisely which doctors' advice you'd like and do extensive research yourself before any consultations.

What sort of treatments are they offering for acne scarring in Belgium? Just curious as it's much closer to me than US, in case I ever decide to get treatments abroad.

Thanks for the replies guys. Also wondering which dermatologists in Belgium you are talking about.
And also guys.. Would it help to post a picture of my scars? so you can give me advice on which method i should take?
I have found that doctors are less willing to treat back scars, since they can be covered. You can post a picture if you like, but it is not discreet. My pictures ended up on google images.
