I've suffered with acne for a really long time, and finally have it under control. However, now I have scars = pretty much every kind of scar possible. I know I need to see a dermatologist -- I used to see one for my actual acne -- but I'm afraid that I will go into the office and they will tell me that there's really nothing that can be done.
I live in Kansas and probably won't travel far for treatment, and I need something that's effective without being ridiculiously expensive. I'm not looking for miracles here as I know I probably won't ever have porcelin skin, but I do dream of a day when I can go out and do things without being afraid that all people will see is my face.
Any personal experiences that any of you want to share?
If a derm tells you that there is nothing that can be done then they are not a derm, end of story. I have only seen one derm before and they were okay but the treatments they suggested were not those that were carried out by their practice. So bottom line was I paid for this derm to tell me things that I could have found out by myself, and in fact I have learned more from my own research.
In my experience a medically qualified esthetician is your best bet. I have decided that I want to enter the field so that I can help people in the same way that my esthetician has helped me! Derms, in my opinion seem a little blas© and aren't really concerned about your scarring as it's not a disease or life-threatening thing. If your acne is under control they might just tell you to deal with the rest on your own. But if this does turn out to be the case don't let it get you down. Bottom line is that if your derm cannot help you then they need to get with the times.
Anyway, my point is that you cannot give up! What works for one person may not work for others. For me, 5 sessions of Fraxel laser (Re:Store) did next to nothing whereas 5 sessions of the Dermaroller... amazing results. As for expense, that is a big one. I saved like crazy to get my treatments done because the cheap alternatives or home remedies just do not cut it. So I cannot, would not, should not even recommend these things. If you want real results sadly you will have to fork out real hard earned dollars for it.
My biggest piece of advice though, if you do save up for professional treatments (which I recommend!) please do not compare clinics based solely on price. You pay for what you get. You really do. If they're more expensive, ask them why - chances are they'll have more experience and their technicians are likely to be doctors or medical estheticians rather than useless nurses or beauty therapists. Stay away from day spas, look for the professionals. I found my professional in the end. Took lots of trial and error but now that I have her I am confident that I will get my skin to where I want it.
I know this is probably not what you wanted to hear but the short of it is that your treatment journey has only just begun. I started mine 5 years ago and only now am I really reaping the benefits.
Stay strong and good luck! xx
Hey Quirky Fox, do you have any before and afters? You seem so happy with your treatments, especially dermaroller which I'm really interested in but I'm scared it could make my scars worse (deep and wide). I cannot seem to find anyone who doesn't just recommend CO2 laser, which is scary to start with. And most PS are interested in more cosmetic surgery.
